Actually I was misinformed. The CLIQ is scheduled for Q2 however the XT should be close behind. No, it won't go to 1.6. The XT just came out so it wouldn't make much sense doing that. Like I said, if you want to mess around with the OS yourself, that's your call but I'm just not into that especially since I have to pay full price for my phones. I can't afford to accidentally be bricking my phone. I simply prefer to make it work the best it can as is. Also makes it easier to get support and apply suggestions from boards like this. If you go the 'rooting" route, be prepared to totally support it yourself or with the help of others who also like doing that.

Oh ok. I can't wait for the update.
I'm definitely not trying to brick my XT, but I'm thinking it might be time to root my G1. Lol.

You know, maybe it's just me but I think 1.5 runs pretty good on the XT. I had 1.6 on my myTouch and it didn't run this good. XT also has some software enhancements that give it some extra nice features too. I know some people just have to do that (they have a lot in common with Tim "Tool Man" Taylor ). I'm liking the way mine is running right now so I'm going to sit tight. You know sometimes, the updates end up causing more headaches - like making it run slower. I certainly hope not but for now, I'm good.

LOL.
That's true.
My gripe is that most of the apps I purchased don't run on 1.5 anymore. Only on 1.6+. So the really good/cool apps I've got I can't use on my XT. Now that I rooted my G1 though I'm happy. LOL.

I guess I'm a person of relatively simple tastes. I'm also someone who doesn't believe in bogging my phone down with a lot of apps that I won't use, regardless of how cool or useful they are. That's just me. I figure, the more I put on there, the more likely I will be to have trouble so I stick to those apps I really use and most of those appear to run on all the OS's (thank God). Well, here's hoping that the update is in the front of Q2 vs the rear.

I got the phone too, fully knowing that it ran 1.5. I've had it about a week now and no 2.1 update as of yet. Those reps will tell you anything to sell you a phone, or sometimes they have no idea what they're talking about so they tell you what you want to hear so they can get you off the phone ASAP. They'd rather be on a call making a sale, don't get me wrong, there are some really good reps and some really awful ones too. I never take mush stock in what they say, I ALWAYS go to xdadevlopers.com and see what they have to say about it first, They know what's going down before the reps do most of the time. But I"m sure the cliq will update to 2.1,, it the regular cliq is we'll have to get it, the only problem is When???????

Man I Am totally with you guys on not messing with this phone. I had the regular Cliq, I rooted it, when I tried to flash a recovery Image the phone bricked on me, (I probably did something wrong I'm not blaming anyone for it) Fortunately it was right around the time the 1.3.8 ota update was out so I called T-mobile and said I powered off the phone during the update and that's what happened to it, so they sent me a new cliq free, even paid for the shipping, but I know they won't buy that story again so I'm just going to wait for the ota update. I think this phone kicks major ass just with what it came with. I'm as happy as I was when I got the G1 the day it came out, not that's Happy . So there's no way in hell I'm going to risk bricking this phone.. Just not worth the aggravation.

Am I the only one in here that's digging the Flash player? even though it's only flash lite, it's flash none the less, I've been watching flash cartoons and flash games. It works fine, I don't see any reason why the XT shouldn't get Flash 10 when it comes out as well. I hope anyhow.

Anyone concerned with what version their soon to be new phone is running, should have been on the boards BEFORE they bought the thing. You don't always get the real news on here but in this case, the XT was confirmed for update in Q2. Now of course, that's a 3-month span but it's still more than we had a few weeks ago. As for the store reps, they rarely know what they're talking about. I only know one rep that I would trust providing me with that info and even he doesn't always find out faster than I do.

I'm not sure what all the differences are but there are a number of differences just between 1.5 and 1.6 so you have to think they're going to be noticeable. I like 1.5 just fine but I do miss some of those such as the ability to make direct dial shortcuts and Google lattitude. I believe turn-by-turn directions in Google maps is also something that started in 1.6. No point updating to 1.6 when we're already to 2.1. Everyone would revolt if they did that.
ok the turn by turn i have a gps will the phone run faster i have the G1 and never used the gps takes to long to type the info if u ask me im sure alot of people us it i would like new widgets like the news and social but thats just me

Like I said, I don;t know all the differences but before youmake a decision on anything, you should search long and hard to determine the differences between 1.5 and 2.1. You may be surprised how many differences there are. Rightnow you don't miss them because you never had them.
I just purchased mine a week ago and between this forum and Motorolas Cliq XT site I believe I was very well informed and helped me in making my final decision....The 1.5 OS is running very well and when we get the update to 2.1 just think of what this phone will be able to perform...but i'm happy with where its at now so anything else will be a big PLUS......thanks for all you smart posters out there...makes my life easier being my first smartphone

Sorry people. I'm a very impatient person
Like I keep saying, Android is NOT a good thing to be into if you're an impatient person (I'm still working on that ). To many carriers and phones make pushing out one flavor of Android darn near impossible. Once a new version comes out, each carrier has to tweak it for their specific phones and that's AFTER they determine the effect it will have on the phone. That's why you have so many release times for the different phones. Bottom line? You will ALWAYS be waiting and wondering when your update will come. Just the nature of the Android game.

Speaking of new phones. I'm so getting the EVO. I don't have Sprint, but I don't even care. I'm crazy enough to get a phone with another carrier. OMG!!!! I'm going to pull my hair out!!!! Lol.

I'd have to agree with what a few others said. If I didn't like and wasn't happy with my Cliq XT as is right now, I wouldn't of bought it. Don't get me wrong I think it'll be cool to check out android 2.1, but In my opinion the phone out of the box is great. I had the original Cliq then my daughter's Mytouch pooped out and she wanted the original Cliq for the slide out keyboard so she took that and that gave me an opportunity to grab the XT. But I watched a bunch of un-boxings and reviews on youtube, and of course price factored in. I was due for an upgrade on my 2nd line so I ended up with an XT for $99.00. This phone does everything I like it to do, and I'm happy with it as is. It'll be cool when we get an upgrade but I'm not checking every day for it. I'd just like to see more people with this phone and more of a community of people to post about it. I'm sure that'll happen in time. I remember when I got my MT3G after my G1 and there was NOTHING online about the MT3G, it took a month or two to really catch on, online. This phone speaks for itself. I'm sure in 2 months time there'll be a ton more people with it, and devs with roms and all that good stuff. I forget who posted this but it's the truest thing you'll ever hear. "If you get android, you need to have patience". That's not a bad thing, just make sure you like the phone your buying the way it is, not for what it may or may not do in the future.

I should think they can start with NOT lumping us in with the original CLIQ users as they phone are completely different other than having BLUR and being Motorola phones. I guess maybe that will come in time. I've had my phone for about 3 weeks and I'm still adjusting to it. I like having all of the different widgets as I'm something of an information junkie (all types) so it feeds my obsession . So long as MOTO keeps the BLUR features working properly (an iffy proposition at best these days), I will be pretty happy with my XT. Can't wait for 2.1 to come out even though the phone as is with 1.5 runs pretty good for me. There are additional features that have been added since 1.5 that would really make this phone great. So let's just hope the update is near the beginning of Q2 and not the end.
I would be so stoked if 2.1 offered either some sort of a built-in feature or an app to take screenshots. All the screenshot apps on the market require the phone to be rooted, and the thought of tampering with it like that makes me uneasy.

I seen a link to an app on either MOTO's board or T-Mo's that allowed you to do screen shots. It doesn't require you to root your phone either. I think it was just a desktop executeable and was real easy to use. I'll have to look for that thing again.

The programs you'd have to install look like their made only for a Windows PC but I'll see if it'll work on my Mac later. The only Windows computers I have at home are super slow with very little space, and according to one of the comments on that site, the SDK components take up over 1GB worth of space.
If Android just had some sort of a built-in feature that snagged screenshots and had it automatically saved to the gallery, I'd be very happy.
Anyone else beginning to grow impatient for that 2.1 update? I noticed the Eris owners just got theirs a day or two ago, but a few are complaining about some of the changes.
I was satisfied with 1.6 on my MyTouch, but curiosity continues to kill me on what 2.1 will have to offer.
ahh, god! now 2.2 (froyo) was announced, and we'll be waiting for that update FOREVER. will this impatience never end? do you think the cliq xt will ever get a taste of that froyo goodness? at least without a root? i'm seriously running circles waiting for the 2.1 update, i need it, I REALLY NEED IT. im even looking to buy a different phone because it's taking motorola so effing long to put out these updates. i mean, we're still languishing in 1.5! its embarrassing! i have to use this thing in public?!?! any know if xt was rooted? link?
Aw man! 2.2 supports wifi tethering for up to 8 devices and is 450% faster than 2.1???!! Forget 2.1, I want 2.2 now!! haha (yet another impatient person added to the forums...) :-P
Someone on the moto boards was whining that the update was moved to July, but I have not seen any documentation on this being the case. But nobody from moto disputed it....

Yah, unfortunately I've seen rumblings along that line myself. I was more than willing to give them their full 3 months but dragging it out longer is NOT going to make me happy. I've been discovering things I'd really like to have that I can't get with 1.5. I don't have any particular complaints about my phone, just that I want these new features - sooner rather than later. They're getting on my last nerve now.

Agreed, and it's made worse by the fact that I've been playing with the new MyTouch Slide... and though I hate phones with physical keypads, I LOVE how 2.1 operates!
The anticipation is overwhelming, the delivery however-- quite underwhelming.
Okay, sorry to bump the thread with more useless replies but DAYUM. I've grown so beyond impatient that I don't even care anymore if the update comes on time. If anything, I think I'd rather prefer skipping 2.1 and having us go straight to the 2.2 FroYo update, which is rumored to be the case at the moment. What do you guys think?
i guarantee it will not be froyo. it will be 2.1 and if they can't get it right before september then it won't be until 2011, as they are not going to upgrade your current model at the time of year when they make the most money on selling NEW models. sorry guys, but it's obvious we're getting the run-a-round - the xt was doomed from the start.
I'd say go ahead and start shopping other models that are preloaded with froyo or 2.1 (whichever you prefer) - just make sure it's not motorola, cause when froyo is yesterday's news, you'll be right back in the same boat you're in now...sitting, waiting, and wishing.
Could we please site a source for this info? Was it something that you heard or read? It would be good to see it in print somewhere, LOL. The Roadmap is unclear but it, too looks like a mid-August drop. If you have a source, it would be great if you could share it with us!
You know, I wouldn't be surprised if mid-August was when they were going to announce the release of 2.1 rather than just rolling it out. But I think if they knew they were going to give it to us by then, they'd announce it by now since it's right around the corner...
Then again I wouldn't be surprised either if 2.1 doesn't even come out this month for us.

With a name like CLIQ XT, one would think this phone would be a larger or more heavily powered version of Motorola's first ever Android - the Motorola CLIQ. But in reality the Motorola CLIQ XT is a different beast entirely, ditching the slideou... Read More
