Will the motorola cliq be able to tether somehow? I would need a phone I can occasionally use for internet on my macbook. Also, what's rooting exactly? Will I be able to do that on the cliq?

It has blue tooth and it is Android, so the phone *should* be able to tether. Chances are high that t-mobile will not allow it. There was a blow-up around this back in the March/April time frame because t-mobile did not want to have people tether. It ended with Google leaving tethering apps at the market, but blocking them specifically for t-mobile customers.
I have successfully tethered the Cliq via PDAnet on my VM XP machine running on a Macbook Pro. I havent been able to share the windows internet back to the MBP or figured out a bluetooth work around. I am hoping someone will figure a root for this phone.
I also hope that a 2.0 release will come out. When I talked to Motorola they said:
"Regarding your concern, at this moment we cannot confirm when an upgrade will be available. However the phone is ready to receive software upgrades to both the Google Android OS, and the Moto Blur interface, therefore upgrades are being planned, but we don't have a release schedule, or confirmation up to which Android version it's going to upgrade."
With further questioning I was able to get an opinion.
"I think the upgrade will come shortly as it is a new phone with completely new features and functions, we will be
continuously improving it."
I guess only time will tell but I have no plans to keep this phone if T-Mobile and Motorola dont step it up.
Weird, do HTC phones require special USB drivers to connect phone to PC?
Why does Motorola require special drivers? can you see the Cliq memory without the drivers? That's weird.
Todd.
I dont know about the HTC, I would imagine not. The drivers are only required in Windows. OS X it just shows up as a device and then a flash drive.
Anybody want to collaborate on rooting the Cliq let me know. I have some SDK experience and been playing with the MOTODEV Android studio. I really wanna get this thing rooted, it has potential
I downloaded the motorola drivers and pdanet. I am able to explore the SD card on my Motorola Cliq via my laptop. My device is not charging though. Can you only use the USB connection to do only one task at a time? During set up of pdanet on my Motorola Cliq I was prompted to use to use the device as a USB Drive or Charging Only. I selected USB Drive. Is this why the Cliq is not charging when it is connected to my laptop? How do I fix this?
Thx in advance!
P.S. I've used the Pocket PC and/or Windows Mobile Smartphones for the last 5 yrs so Android is a little new to me.
I'm haveing a hard time dowloading the program used for tathering.
I have a click phone. When I try to download from tapnet I get an error saying file is not supported . Pleas help me. I have work to do and my husband forgot to pay the bills. I need internet access for my home pc.
it was a piece of cake to set up on the cliq,,downloaded file from market..then downloaded files from junefabrics.com to my phone. followed instructions as far as setting on pc side and phone side, and it worked. took less then 20 mins to get running and that includes downloading and installing files.
Did you have to do anything special? I can connect perfectly to my Windows virtual machine in Parallels, but i cannot get it to connect in OSX. it connects, but i can't get an IP supposedly so i cannot go anywhere. I don't have 3G in my area is that a factor?
Tethering through PDAnet right now on a Lenovo PC on Win 7. Didn't need to do anything special. Just ran the setup and followed on screen instructions. It's pretty easy actually.

i have tried downloading pdanet to the phone but it says it not supported
and will not finish the download????????????
if you try to download it for the site and it is not an apk it will deny you... you are probably downloading the pc install program... try downloading it on your pc first copy the apk to your sdcard then use Astro file manager to install it on your phone.
did you pay for pdanet cause it is not worth paying for...
try this Tetherbot
if you are unrooted pda net will do the same thing as tetherbot in the background

i got the free version. is there any better or easier program out there???
yes it is called rooting your cliq
but i dont think there is really anthing out there that will give u full tethering with out it being rooted but i could be wrong....
for me i did see below
Yeah, I have PDAnet and it connects for maybe 5 mins, and then it pops up on my computer that PDAnet.exe has stopped working...I have the Cliq as well...and I downloaded the about drivers for my PC 64 bit....what can I do beyond this to get it to work? My dad has the Droid and it works for him every single time...I am puzzled...
try using EasyTether. i found this app in the android market. using it you can use the motorola cliq to tether via usb cord. the app includes instructions on how to set up your device and pc to allow the tethering to occur. Hope this helps(:
Guys, PDAnet works great for me and my Cliq. I am not rooted, yet, and I did a Demo of the app for a gentlemen who ended up buying a Droid. It works great. I know some of these posts are a little dated, but as of now, it should work just fine :-)

Thanks! I tethered with PDAnet on Windows 7 laptop fine, Netbook with XP would not connect and forced reboot of Cliq for me. However EasyTether worked fine with both.

Weird! The machine i demoed it on was an XP machine. But im glad you have a solution.
Im kinda new to the android software i have only had the motorola cliq xt for about a month now i have been total blackberry for the last 4 years. but i dont know if any one is still reading this post, but i have downloaded the pdanet and the app works great for tethering and it really fast suprisingly enough. it was simple to install and simple to use. when i used the tether feature on the blackberry it was more difficult but i didnt have to download anything, the downside to it was that the internet was super slow. i currently have the cricket broadband as a modem which is slow but cheap and this works alot faster then that does. only downside i have found to this is that i have the app killer installed and when it starts it terminates the session so i have to reconnect but i know that is just a setting that i need to disable for proper workings.

I just put PDANET 2.41 on my Macbook & Cliq yesterday. It worked flawlessly for the 45 minutes or so I used it. I was only on Edge so it wasn't very fast (in fact, bordered on painful ) but it did work fine. Looking forward to trying it on 3G next...
You can get it in the App Market and then do a Google search from your Mac... you need to install both (of course).

Thanks so much bidedogrun! I installed PDANET 2.41 on both my Macbook and Cliq and it works great! I ended up purchasing the full version since I will use it often. I can't wait to upgrade to 2.x so we could use Bluetooth tethering instead of having it wired. I'm getting decent speeds of 1.25 Mbps down and 1.10 Mbps up. I could live with this.
I pay entirely waaaaaay to much $ for my phone . I have unlimited eveything..wi-fi
Blue tooth...mini usb connection..why cant i use the phone to connect..ie;ps3,laptop?????? Whyy i pay for unlimited accsess thats being limited! Grrrrr, angry T-Mobile customer:/

I actually upgraded a few months ago to a T-Mobile Nexus One. Running 2.2.1 on it now and WiFi tethering is standard on it. I'm able to use the 3G for my Xbox 360 to play online.
I believe when 2.2 is available for the Cliq, you should be able to root it and get WiFi tethering. Not sure if 2.2 will be made available though.

I'm a n00b in these forums, and this seems to be a late response, but I'm running a rooted [official TMo/Motorola] 2.1 on my Cliq (and have been for a few months now), and am running Barnacle WiFi Tether just fine on it. I use it all the time with either my laptop or iPod Touch. And even before that, I was running a rooted 1.6 custom ROM and was able to use WiFi tethering on it. Forgot which app that was though, as it came with the custom ROM I used.
It eats up battery life like crazy, but you'd be shocked at the range. I was broadcasting Pandora into my iTouch, and I wanted to see how far it would go. It streamed just fine till around 75 feet away, even through building columns and offices and cubicles. Actually, I didn't even test where it cut off, since I literally ran out of building.

I bought the "easy tether pro" on the market page for $9.99 and it works fine. you have to copy files to your computer from the phone.
