Motorola Droid 2 Dummy Units Now Appearing at VZW Corporate Stores
I leaked these photos to Phandroid earlier, so I thought I'd post em' here after they got all watermarked up..
This dummy unit is one of many showing up at Verizon corporate stores in preparation for next week’s Droid 2 launch. See it in all of your favorite poses, including some Droid 1/Droid 2 comparison shots to give you an idea how the two stack up.
More leaks to come soon...
P.S. I'll be receiving my Droid 2 this coming Tuesday if all goes well and I'll be glad to answer your many questions as soon as I get my hands on it.

The main question that I have is; How is the keyboard? The keyboard was the biggest issue I had with the first Droid. I have been hearing that the Droid 2 has a much larger keyboard because they got rid of the directional pad and that is great. I definitely want to head over to a Verizon store and get a feel for the keyboard to see if I like it.
I currently have the Droid X which I love but I think I would want to have the physical keyboard. That leads me to my next question: What OS is the Droid 2 running? I am loving the resizeable widgets that the Droid X has, so I hoping that I would be able to do that with Droid 2.

The Droid 2 will come with Froyo 2.2 and also have the newer version of blur the Droid X has, so you're in luck

That is awesome to hear! Other things I am hearing about the Droid 2 is that it will only have a 750mhz processor and doesn't record 720p video. Is this true? These are also major set backs.

Droid 2 will have identical 1Ghz OMAP 3630 Processor that is inside the Droid X.
As for the 720P, My bets are a yes.
If not at launch, in the near future.
The Nexus One and Droid Incredible both now shoot 720P.
I will quote myself from another thread:
Its not ALL about the megapixels.
The answer lies with Texas Instruments Texas Instruments OMAP36x Mobile Development Platform (MDP) is a fully-featured evaluation platform built around TI's OMAP3630 applications processor. The OMAP3630 applications processor "DOES" integrate powerful 720p multimedia.

I really can't believe this phone is expected to come out in 3 days and there isn't already more buzz and chatter about it. I really hope that it does record in HD. That will be a shame if it doesn't especially since that is basically a standard now when it comes to smartphones.

I think there is a good amount of Fanfare surrounding the release, blogs and forums across the net are pimping it as every new shred of evidence and leaks come out - plus Verizon just had an insert with the Droid 2 packed into nearly every Sunday paper across the US. Sure its nothing like the iPhone craze, but Droids are for discerning well versed device connoisseurs, not middle aged house wives that like the newest shiny thing Steve Jobs releases
I'd actually prefer if Verizon was even less vocal about it. I was at a friend's house, and it looked like a local Verizon authorized retailer had blanketed the neighborhood with "Droid2 Coming Soon" flyers. I kept thinking, "exnay on the oidtwodray. I'd like to be able to have a shot at picking one up on launch day."

I'm able to do an Annual Upgrade... will it probably be $199, or will it be $299 with a $100 mail-in rebate?

My middle-aged wife for whom we have been waiting for the Droid 2 to be released will appreciate your description.

Haaa! NO offense intended... I was just trying to point out there is truly no set demographic for people that clamor for the iPhone - teeny boppers to senior citizens have all been brainwashed to think its a miracle that makes phone calls for some reason!
Females, for the most part... not only care less about technology, but couldn't tell you what Froyo was to save their life - so its cool your wife is stoked about the Droid 2!

I am surprised Best Buy isn't taking pre-orders like they did with the Droid X. Honestly, if you want one on launch day, your best bet would be to try Walmart.

Why not just show up at a Verizon Corporate store an hour or so before opening since they get the most models?

I'm glad they're not as that was apparently truly a debacle. Read the Droid X forum threads relating to this and you'll see that many people apparently placed pre-orders at BestBuy, including buying a $50 BestBuy gift card as part of the pre-order process, to not only not have devices available on launch day but to also end up waiting longer than those who purchased the phone from other sources. One person related that the BestBuy store that took their pre-order, along with a number of others, actually had no units available on launch day and no ETA for when they would have any. It seemed that many of those with BestBuy Droid X pre-orders actually ended up purchasing their phone via some other method.

Yeah, I hear you man. I remember I calling around to every single Best Buy within 40 miles of me and getting the same answer: We are sold out. I started calling Walmarts and got a couple that had some in stock.
My other question is I currently have the Droid X that I bought less than 30 days ago from Walmart. Do I have to cancel my Verizon contract and return the phone before the Droid 2 comes out or can I just make changes since it was less than 30 days ago and I can return everything within 30 days.
Device(s): Iphone 3G>Nexus One>DROID X> Samsung Focus> Inspire> IPhone 4S > soon to be Samsung Galaxy S3 *RED*

What makes you want to return the X? I'm thinking about it as well, just curious to see what's your reason....
Mainly just because I want a physical keyboard. Also I think I would prefer a slightly smaller phone. But I hated the Droid 1's keyboard so I am calling around looking for dummy models. I called three different Verizon corporate stores and they said they don't have any dummy models of the Droid 2 on display. I called some Best Buys. One told me the dummy models can't be shown until the 12th. The rest said they don't have any Droid 2s. So I am not sure what to think right now.

That's my reason as well. I think I rather have the smaller phone and I think it would be easier to play snesnoid/gba games on the physical keyboard, but I find myself going back and forth.
I just got back from the closest Verizon store to me. I asked them if they know when the Droid 2 will be arriving at their store. The lady said she had no idea, but she thinks it is the 15th. Then I thought to myself, has a phone ever came out on a Sunday?

Oh brother... see this is something that annoys me. People like us obsess over rumors for months on end, and the employees don't even care enough to have ample information for inquiring customers.

But is it the employees not caring about having the information or their not having it? I would think that managers and employers play a role how much their empolyees do or do not know about new or upcoming products.

Well sure everyone shares some slice of responsibility in this situation... but it is still unacceptable on the eve of one of the largest and most anticipated product launches in the history of Verizon, for employees not to be aware of the impending release date with utmost certainty. Even if the employee or manager was a lazy unconcerned employee on the verge of being fired, you would still assume it would be common 'water cooler' small talk for employees to know far in advance the plans for devices and the items they are going to be expected to sell.

Oh sorry... I heard this from another forum member and also read about it on another website early this morning. I forget what the website was, but they basically alluded to the 10th as the official announcement, not today (Monday) which of course so far has turned out to be true. The fellow member who PMd me is very well versed and involved in the industry for quite some time, but I don't know if I should mention his name.
My apologies for not having an actual source, but my 'intuition' tells me tomorrow we'll hear something, IF the 12th is the true release date! Let's keep our fingers crossed...
I am keeping my fingers crossed, but this phone just needs to come out before the 20th. That is when my 30 days ends with the Droid X and I am not able to return it to Walmart anymore.

I can confirm that the original announcement will come tomorrow. Just can't share my source..
I am trying to convince my wife to get this phone, I don't know if she is going to get this one, the X, and or the original Droid. All are good choices to me.

Will all of the above advantages people love about the Droid eventually come to the Droid 2?
IF...the bootloader gets hacked and unlocked successfully,
this will also mean custom roms
and the ability to have true vanilla android.
This comes with a BIG IF

I have absolutely no knowledge of what is involved to hack/unlock a bootloader... but I've never seen a popular device such as the iPhone NOT be jailbroken or completely hacked with the huge amount of digital geniuses existing out there.
What is the difference between rooting your phone (which is already possible with the one click application) and hacking the bootloader?

Let's take this topic to the droid2 prerelease discussion thread or private message
We are soooo off main topic of this thread

The keyboard is amazing. Comparing it to the original Droid keyboard is a crime. I had a Devour and I like the keyboard on the Droid 2 more than the one on the Devour (which had quite a nice keyboard).
The Droid 2 is running 2.2 with their custom UI. It will most likely be released that way as well.

I believe there is a 30 days return policy so you should be able to return it and get another. Not sure if you'll be charged a restocking fee, though.

I am very glad to hear that. Unfortunately for me, I have very very very large fingers so I am hoping my fingers will be able to hit the keys properly. For some reason I easily mastered typing on my iPhone 3G.
Yea I know about the 30 day return policy. The lady at Verizon did tell me that there would be a $35 restocking fee. But then I told her that I bought the phone from Walmart. I am not sure if there is a restocking fee there.

I was also told about the restocking fee via Email from a Verizon rep... but when I mentioned it here on the forums the members seemed pretty certain that is only their formal policy, and if all original materials are returned in new condition there isn't anything mentioned of a restocking fee.

If you buy a new phone from VZ and there is a hardware defect, you do NOT pay the $35 restock fee.
Simply make a full return within 30 days. (Bring original packaging etc)
Call CustomerCare prior to your store visit to make return and have them note your account to waive the restocking fee explaining your hardware defect.
This will prevent any resistance In store, and speed up your return transaction process.
