Default No video chat on Droid 3, even with 2.3.4?

https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/53557

Droid 3 comes with Android 2.3.4 however users report that video chat in Google Talk is not present. One of the big new features in 2.3.4 is video chat in 2.3.4

I just looked and this phone is not yet supported by Skype either....yet. I'm guessing that developers didn't get much of a chance to build anything for this one because it was kept so tightly under wraps. I hope that's going to change very soon!

With video? I'll admit I didn't try it. I just didn't see where you could turn video on or off like I can on my computer so I ASSumed it wasn't there. Thanks for straightening me out!

I just tried with the Skype mobile app as well as the Skype app. The call part of it works fine but no video on my end or on the other end (computer). Either I'm doing something wrong or video chat is not yet available.

I've not tried either of those or Tango. I'm looking for something that will work between my phone and a computer.

I'm counting on Skype coming through for us and developing support for the Droid 3.(My 85 yo dad has Skype. I don't know if I could teach him to use another program.)

No, sorry, I did not try that. I just assumed you were talking about Skype in general! I have not tried the video.

Default updates

I am very pessimistic about updates anymore. It doesn't seem like anyone cares to update. I wanted this for video chat. Now I am sad to read that even with 2.3.4 we can't have video chat? Wtf

OoVoo works, but the callee reports the FFC video is flipped upside down and there was no audio.

Skype made voice-only calls.

Fring complained that my device wasn't supported yet.

Post Skype Video

Could somebody post an APK of a working copy of Skype Video that will install on a Droid 3? Much thanks current apks will not install and yes I have "install from unknown sources" enabled.

I think we just have to wait until a person either mods the app to be used for the D3 or have Skype officially release it for the D3.

I don't think it should take that long since the D3 is already running 2.3.4.

I tried one from another forum, and it didn't work properly. I could see the video of the person on the other end (who was on a PC), but the camera on the Droid 3 never turned on.

And as for Google Talk video chat, according to Motorola it isn't supported at launch (which we all knew), but it's coming: https://motorola-enterprise.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/69514/~/droid-3---google-talk

I took the liberty of finishing that sentence:

"DROID 3 by Motorola will not support Google Talk videochat at the time of market launch. We are excited about the potential of videochat to enrich the Motorola smartphone experience, and we are working actively with Google and Verizon Wireless to enable this feature as soon as possible...for a small monthly fee!"

Has anybody found a D3 video chat solution?

D3 to computer for me, so I am banking on google talk or Skype.

I tried a few, but they either don't work, are only phone to phone, or suck.

And what is up with the default Skype on D3 not supporting Wifi? Verizon is trying to get you to up your data? Normal skype works fine. I hope they don't release a D3 non-wifi skype...

There would be a wifi-only APK somewhere, I'm sure

The default Skype is a special deal between Skype and Verizon that's been around since before the regular Skype that's available in the market. It doesn't work over WiFi because it allows you to use Skype to make calls over Verizon's voice network as opposed to over data. I guess it could be useful if you're in a weak 3G area with no wifi, but beyond that, I've always found it to be useless.

It's up to Skype to implement video support for the Droid 3 in the regular Skype app from the market.

Yep. You can just DL the main Skype app in the market. It amazes me that anyone would ever use the Verizon one over the official one but I bet there is a substantial amout of users out there who just don't know any better.

That's what bothers me so much about this bloat. Verizon forces it on us hoping that we're not smart enough to know better. There are people who just wouldn't know better and that's the target.

Slimy business.

I've tried Qik and Skype and neither seem to support video chat. Skype doesn't have an option for it and Qik force closes when I try to video chat on it. I have not tried Tango, nor do I know anything about it. Has anyone had success using Tango for video chat? Is it any good?

I've not tried Tango, but I hear it works well. Another alternative to Google Talk is an app called vtok. It does both audio and video with google talk and works with either the front or back camera. I tried it out with gmail chat on my computer and it worked pretty good. Receiving video on the phone was a bit blocky, but video transmission looked very nice.

So the general consensus is to download the real Skype from Android Market and not use the crippled one that came w/ our phones?

The real one doesn't work either. I think the idea is that if you have it, when the update comes in that allows the video chat to work, you'll get it.

I see. Well, I guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that VZW and Skype release the software for it. Otherwise, it'd defeat the purpose of a front-facing camera.

Well, they're two completely different apps that use Skype in completely different ways. The one that comes pre-installed on the phone isn't "crippled," it's just used in a different (and limited) way. But a data connection of some sort (3G or wifi) will be needed for the video option to work, so the pre-installed version will probably never be updated to use the front camera because of the nature of how it works - over Verizon's voice network and not over the data network.

The Skype app from the market will eventually be updated to work with the Droid 3. They keep updating it to work with more and more phones, so there's no reason why the Droid 3 wouldn't be added at some point. But the update will have nothing to do with Verizon. It's up to Skype to update their app, not Verizon.

Thanks for the correction. Then in that case, we just need to hope Skype releases an update that's compatible w/ Droid 3.

I wonder if it'd ever be compatible w/ the computer version of Skype. For example, if I wanted to Skype a relative using his/her Webcam and laptop while I use my phone and its FFC.

Yes, it will be. It does with all of the other compatible phones. Once video chat is implemented for a device, Skype to Skype works between any devices that are able to do it, including computers.

How can verizon sell us on a video chat capable phone yet no service is available for it? They might as well say the phone has the ability to drive you to work. They just haven't designed an app yet to do so.

It is capable and does work, but not with Skype or any other (what I call) mainstream apps. I don't use Tango but it has been reported that it works.

I finally got around to finding out and turns out that Tango works quite well on the Droid 3. Only downside is that it is only from one phone to another.

I was shocked that I couldn't use video chat out the box. We used tango just to try it out, but the other party has to be in tango in order for the video call to go through. It seems a bit of a hassle. The tech at the store said skype mobile (which is different from the regular skype app I guess, and says "android" in the market, I believe) should would. I'm not a regular skyper, so maybe that's the problem. But... so far, it won't show video on D3 to D3 skype calls in skype mobile either.

I noticed last night there's an option for video chat on Skype 2.1.0.46. You can't use the front facing camera it says (yet?). I haven't tried chatting with someone though.

Skype for Android has been updated on Aug. 4th, but I haven't tried it yet either with someone else who has a FFC. The Skype for Android for VZW app (allegedly crippleware) was last updated on July 21st, I believe.

I tried Skype on my D3 with someone with iPhone 4 and I could see them, but my video is black. Buttons for camera functions are there, but Front and back camera are blacked out.
We're almost there I guess.

Default From the Market works now

Just to give a final post here, I downloaded the real Skype app from the Market and it works fine over Wifi with full video on the Droid 3 just purchased (Feb 2012)
I don't know which version works, nor when it was updated, but the current version works now with no need for rooting or adaptation.
