Default way to get a notification of new text on main screen?

i had an lg enlighten droid and whenever a new text came in there'd be a little red 1 on the envelop icon on my home screen. but nothing shows up on my droid 3. so if i get a text and dont hear the beep, i have no way of knowing a new text came in. is there a way to fix this? tia!

A new text should show up in the notification bar with a little icon in the upper left hand corner.

You can always download "SMS Popup" if the icon in the notification bar and flashing green light aren't doing it for you

SMS Unread Count will let you add a widget that shows the number of unread SMS.

I believe that either ChompSMS or Handcent allow you to add the little red pop up to the icon on your home screen.

Handcent will give you a pop up box of the text on your homescreen. It's in the settings.

If you are open to using a different home, you can get Launcher Pro, which has the option to show Missed Call, New Text, and New Email counts on your dock
