Someone over at androicentral is saying that Verizon is "up to something" on August 18. I know it's flimsy, but he seems to be an "insider", and I'm thinking it "might" be the "official" announcement on the "official" release date.

"Someone" "likes" "using" "quotation" "marks" "a" "LOT".
That's because every single thing I hear coming from anyone regarding Verizon or the Bionic at this point is total, 100% BS until concretely proven otherwise.
And just like that, in the blink of an eye, we are back off topic.

I've always taken the "" to be a very negative smiley. I don't think your use of quotations warranted that negative of a response. In fact, I think you used just the right amount given how unreliable the leaks about this device have been.

Long as there's no hope of getting back on topic right away, I'd just add that I was surprised to find that scare quotes could be given w/double quotes; I always thought they just used singles.

It is quite negative, isn't it? And I must say, big baby, I appreciate your support of my disdain for all rumors regarding Verizon and Bionic. Yes, thanks indeed, my good man.

Does seem that folks are a bit on edge. Lighten guys. It's not a matter of life and death ... it's much more serious than that.
As most folks are guys here, you may not have intimate knowledge of this particular phenomenon, but y'all remind me of how sometime in the last month of pregnancy your physical limit is reached. I'll spare you the details, but trust me there comes a point where you believe the baby will NEVER come. Each day is like a lifetime and you just kind of give up to misery.
Well, let me assure you that a) the baby does eventually get born and b) within the next several weeks those of you who want it will have the Bionic in your hands.
With that said, do you think that August 18 is the announcement date or the release date? How far ahead do carriers usually announce? I remember seeing ads for the Droid like the day before it was released (and they worked; I was immediately sold). Do they usually announce a few weeks out from a release?

Well, I'm not sure what happened with the Droid because I was out of the country for about a year and a half, and I actually came back the same weekend it was out. My wife and I needed cell phones since we are planning on staying in the US until 2012 or so, so we went to Verizon and picked out the phones we liked best. I hadn't even heard of the Droid. I was wondering why the store was so full; we had to wait like 45 minutes just to talk to someone.
Having said that, I strongly believe that the August 18 will merely be an announcement that the Bionic is coming. They will probably announce that pre-orders will begin September 1, and that it will be available in stores on the 8th.
I have no actual info to back that up; it's just a gut feeling.

Well, I got curious and I looked up the D1 announcement date. It was 10/29/09...two weeks before D1 was released. So it looks like bluefire may be right.
Edit: Sorry, that is it was released one week later, on November 6. I got it mixed up with the actual day I bought the phone, which was November 14th.

I know you don't want to hear this but, it's most probably the new LTE locations. Tomorrow is when they'll be rolling them out.
Stay optimistic though! I'm right along with ya

Right, the carriers announce where LTE is going to be, NOT phone manufacturers. For the most part carriers also announce release dates, not the phone manufacturers.... (for the most part)
My guess would be Motorola will announce upcoming phones or something to do with the sale to Google.

I just came across this and haven't seen it posted (or mentioned for that matter).
While checking my Twitter today I came across the following Article, which says the Droid Bionic could be within 2 weeks of being launched. Now mind you, I don't know how credible this is, but it still is a good read
The Motorola DROID Bionic could be within 2 weeks of being launched according to a source for Android Central who expects to see the long awaited phone get released on August 26th, no matter what Sanjay Jha has said. As if to punctuate how close the eagerly awaited handset could be to being in your grasp, it seems that at least one Verizon location has already received its shipment of the phone. And the paperwork that the store received with the shipment shows that it booked in 2 units of the phone that have a retail value of $587 each. Now before you turn red and start shaking, that dollar amount is before any subsidy or rebate. We would imagine that Verizon will offer the Motorola DROID Bionic for a price of $249.99 with a 2 -year contract. Any higher could price the phone out of the market.
That is not the only new Motorola DROID Bionic news today. A tipster for TechnoBuffalo was able to leak the Tips and Tricks manual for the phone and as a result, we can confirm that the device will have a laptop styled dock to connect to that offers a full Firefox browser-similar to what is available for the Motorola ATRIX 4G on AT&T. The DROID Bionic will have new widgets and will offer wireless printing via Wi-Fi which is being called MotoPrint. A bedside mode will allow you to use your phone as an alarm clock and there will be an HDMI-out slot with mirror mode so that your HD television can show what is on your DROID Bionic's display.
Need to access your home PC while on the road? Your Motorola DROID Bionic will be equipped with Zumocast which will let you access and stream files remotely from your PC to your handset. Most of the other specs revealed in the leaked manual have been pretty much confirmed before, like the 4.3 inch qHD display, an 8MP camera with LED flash that captures video at 1080p, a trio of microphones scattered throughout the device and the ability to be a mobile hotspot for as many as 8 devices.

One of the biggest concerns I've had with these new 'super' phones coming out is pricing. Yea we all want our Bionic or whatever super phone suits you. But are you willing to pay $300/$400 for it? Myself, for a phone,no way. Two years time you turn around and do it again. So here's hoping the highest it prices out at is $250....
Here we go again, I remember 1-2 years ago coming on here for the HTC Droid Incredible release... now I'm due for an uprade and IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN... AGHHHHH
what a crock, i was expecting an official release date for the bionic today. that was silly of me to actually think that.
Remember, carriers announce release dates of their phones. The manufacturer, in this Motorola, does not tell the carrier, in this case Verizon, when they will release their phone, in this case the Bionic, for sale.

299 seems a bit much... I think I'll wait for HTC Vigor...
If the Bionic was out right now... I would definitely get it, but... Still gotta wait 3 weeks? Eh.

I'm sure that Verizon will keep their prices the same for new LTE phones. 299 all the way.

Agreed, especially since we're all locked into these 2yr contracts where Verizon makes the real money.
If you're patient, you can wait a few months for the price to come down a little, or you can buy a refurb that may be just as good as new.
When the Motorola Droid Bionic was first announced at CES 2011, it featured a 4.3-inch qHD display, NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, and support for Verizon's 4G LTE high-speed network. After the handset was delayed, Motorola... Read More
