Default locked in unlimited data today

So I have had a dumb phone on my personal verizon account for years, never got a smartphone because I have one from work.

I picked up a free BB Curve from a buddy and just activated it on my account this afternoon with the $29.99 Unlimited Data plan.

Hope to pickup the Bionic or even some other one (depending on reviews) down the line, and keep the data unlimited.

Anyone else been doing the same thing?

You might be in for a surprise. The blackberry plan is different from the normal smartphone plan.

My verizon rep specifically told me that if I switched to a BB, I would lose my unlimited plan. I would ask if I were you

I won't be, as the Bionic won't be coming out within the 14 day return time frame. I'd much rather have a great phone that I'd love to have for 2 years and just use WiFi most of the time (which will happen anyway as 90% of where I am has WiFi) than get a year-old phone with unlimited data.

But that's just my thinking.

Why not get the DX2 or something now, then return and get the D3 in a few days, which would be a much better device and provide the correct unlimited plan.

Is it even confirmed that the Droid 3 is coming out within those 14 days? I know the rumored is the 14th, but I don't want to get stuck with the DX2. And I want LTE, for future proofing. Then the Bionic has more RAM, again future proofing.

The lesser of the "evils". A BB may not lock in the correct unlimited data plan, but an Android device WILL lock in the correct plan.

As far as future proof, first generation devices tend not to do that very well. Especially the current state of LTE radios. If the Bionic has similar issues as well, that will be four different radios from four different OEMs.

For mid to long-term (unless the D3 is borked like the DX2) the D3 is a better device than the BB and provides the correct data plan to lock in.

Today is the final day, so best for the OP to confirm if the data plan will carry over to unlimited for Android devices.

While it is not a guarantee, I called Verizon and asked that if I am currently getting unlimited data on the $29.99 plan on a BB, would qualify for unlimited data at $29.99 if I upgrade in the future to a droid. I was told that the upgrade would be eligible (I upgraded to an old BB Storm yesterday while waiting for the Bionic). Hope this info is helpful to someone...

I also just locked in unlimited data on the last day they have it. I got the droid charge so I'd have LTE. Since I bought the phone on wirefly, I'm hoping the Bionic will come out by Aug 6th so I can use wirefly's 30 day satisfaction guarantee if I decide that I'd like the bionic better.

I looked at my plan details online...I have 4 lines on my account and the Facinate has the same unlimited plan that my BB has now.

Looked at my dad's BB plan as well, it shows as a standard smartphone data plan. When my dad got his BB, they called it a BlackBerry data plan, but that's mostly because Android didn't exist to any degree back then.

I call into Verizon last night specifically to ask this question. I mentioned the Bionic by name and asked about upgrading in August to the Bionic, the Charge, the Revolution or the Thunderbolt from my BlackBerry. I was told no fewer than 5 times that I would be able to upgrade at any point in the future and keep my unlimited data. I grilled the rep about the date that they'd be going to tiered data. He was very open that they were going to a tier plan for new customers tomorrow, the 7th of July 2011. I told him that I'd be happy to get the Charge right then if I needed to do that to keep the unlimited data. He said there was "no need" and that I could wait for the Bionic and still keep my unlimited data plan that I have on my BlackBerry.

There was no wiggle room. The Verizon rep was unequivocal about it. If you have unlimited data on a iPhone, BlackBerry or Android phone, you'll be able to keep it whenever you upgrade to any of those three phone types regardless of how late you wait to do it or on what network (i.e. 3G vs. 4G) you upgrade to or from.
