I think early 2012 is extremely optimistic for ICS on the Bionic. I think anywhere in the first half of 2012 is more reasonable as an educated guess on when we're getting it.

Roots not required on the latest update? Oops. Sorry. I guess I'll need to read and catch up. Thanks Thom!

No, the leaked OTA updates floating round use the stock recovery to install. Thus, no rooting is required at all - all that is needed is a pure stock image (full bloat).

This is correct. You only need root if you are attempting to pull the ota to your device. If you download the zip of it you can install in in the stock recovery without being rooted.

Technically, for 5.5.893 and 5.6.893, neither one *requires* you to have root - you can flash a stock, non-rooted and non modified from 5.5.886 to 5.5.893 and then flash 5.6.893 over that just flashed 5.5.893. See the link I post below:

Easily upgrade to 5.7.893 AND keep root - xda-developers

All updates to 5.X.893 , where X ε {5,6,7}, are doable without any root, since all are linked right there in the first post.

Caveat: you need to be on 5.5.886 to start this. if you are not, you'll need to post below so links to other updates can be provided (591 --> 593 and 592 --> 593). Since those are only going to be happening for folks that have already updated at least once, you should already know where to get these updates from.

When I try and download the 5.7 file, it states the hosts bandwidth has been exceded. Anywhere else to get the file?

I have two Bionics here. Neither takes longer than roughly 1/2 second to shoot images in 8MP mode. 6MP wide may take longer... (using the original OS)

Yeah, video in 720 mode sucks on stock .886 and pics in 6 MP mode suck on .886.

Video in 1080 mode looks much much smoother and pics in 8 MP mode look much much smoother and better and are easy to shoot.

I haven't fully tested on 5.7.893 yet, but so far it is just as good as before for the higher resolutions.

I uploaded the leaked updates (all 3 of them) to my MediaFire account. I linked to them in the All Things Root forum so folks could continue to download and apply the updates.

I was just wondering if you wanted the links here as well, since they do not require root, or if you just want to keep this post informational only....

My current big gripe with the original OS is regarding the constant refocusing in video mode. that is the only issue I have regarding the camera, unlike others who have complained about slow camera focus.

Do you have any info on video focus issues, using the newer leaks?

haven't tried it yet. The very first day I made a video it was refocusing badly. After I went into the settings I made sure that 8 MP and 1080 p were the norm.

I'll post a 1080 p video I made using the BIONIC and let you see for yourself - at 80 MPH on the Interstate, no less....

EDIT: GRR! I deleted them without thinking last week. No I don't have the proof anymore....

If someone provides the information for ...

5.7.893 ... OBE leak ...
? - System version
2.3.4 - Android version
? - Baseband version
? - Webtop version
? - ? - Kernel version
? - Build number

... I will add it to the summary.

If it is different for the one-step and three-step installations I can add them both.

Whoa, Whoa, WHOA!

Are you serious?

This sheds new light on something that was puzzling me....

Comparing the Webtop version, I see that the newer 5.8.894 update has the same version. With Baseband and system, it has been incremented.

But the kernel version is actually a reversion to the original kernel, or at least a slightly modifiied stock kernel (as if it is a hybridized stock / leaked update kernel:

I've been asked not to, but rather to conglomerate all these posts into one big sticky (see the Motorola DROID ATR forum's stickied pot at the top).

I just haven't gotten around to it yet b/ of all the time I spend testing sh..stuff, answering posts here as well as my studies and research....

Let me make a real quick an dirty post of all the posts I want in a sticky and I'll include this in there.

I'm still new to modding phones so help me out here please, how do you change the build number? I've downloaded the file, and rooted it with the oneclick method, but don't know how to update the build number, i'm planning to change the mod to Eclipse 1.1 btw, so that's my goal

I think you meant to say 5.5.893 that is the second one listed.

Correct?

It is not recommended at this time. See ... .893 update NOW!.

The idea is that you are probably ahead of us who just installed the OTA and we will catch up to you.

John reported that there will probably be an in-store capability where you will be able to take your Bionic to a Verizon store and get it reverted to the stock path. That has not been announced and is currently not available.

(This is now captured in Message #1 of this thread.)

With 5.7.893 video does not adjust focus while recording but you can tap screen to make an adjustment while recording. Just an observation I've seen since installing 5.7.893.

Thumbs up

I am not sure what qualifies a thread to get "stickied", but I sure think this one (especially the first post) contains a wealth of information organized well, and all in one place. Just my recommendation / $0.02

Default Updating Bionic after root & customize

Im not sure if im asking this in the right section, but i really hope someone can help me out.
I rooted my bionic with the forever root but stupid me actually deleted a couple bloat apps. I am able to download the ota update but i am not able to install it obviously. Is there anyway around this or to force an update without reverting to stock? I really dont want to go thru the time and hassle of backups and reverting etc. Id be amazed if someone hasnt figured out a way...

Please, any/all suggestions.

Thanks,
Bob

I couldn't agree more however, the powers that be are trying to make the stickies look more uniform, so that's why there is the sticky with 0 replies (made by me) that points to this one first and foremost.

There is an undercurrent of feeling that a sticky with tens of pages / hundreds of posts never get read, and that the purpose of a sticky is actually like a table of contents, if you will, rather than just several really good (but long) discussion posts.

But Thom's aggregation and compiling of all this info is so superbly done that it's the first thing I linked to, even before some of my own posts / threads that merit being stickified as well.
