Can't go "back" in browser to a google search results page
This started about one month ago, but for some reason if I go to a webpage from a google search results page, and when I hit the "back" button to go back to the search results it just skips it. It'll go back to the webpage that I was at before I did a search.

Yes, my new bionic is doing that also with the stock browser! It makes web browsing very difficult. :-( Are there settings somewhere that will help us? Like open search results in a new window? I will mess with it more and let you all know if I find a solution.
I've actually been having this problem too lately, kind of annoying. I've been using dolphin hd which helps a little.
Ditto, I switched to dolphin HD also. At least it's a great app, but I'm not a big fan of how tab switching work, but it's a trade-off I can live with.
Dolphin does the same on mine if I search from the address bar. The only solution I've found is to open link in new window.
Yeah Dolphin has been doing the same for me too now, is this some kind of bug with the new software update or something? It doesn't seem like everyone is having this problem though.

I get the same problem in both the stock browser and Dolphin HD. I found another workaround, which is to search from the Google app (I use the widget) instead of the address bar of Dolphin. This fixes the issue (so far at least).

Wouldn't this be the same results as just using the search button? Since I have Dolphin as my default browser it automatically links to Dolphin when i search something but i still get the same problem.

Just tested it and using the search button also fixes the problem for me. Not sure why. Searching from the Dolphin HD address bar still causes the issue.
Did anyone ever find a fix for this? I have the same problem with my razr. It doesn't seem to happen if I remove the browser-android bit of text from the address bar (it's stuck in there on google searches, even when I'm viewing from desktop mode ). I wonder if dolphin HD ' s search bar uses some but in functionality of the stock browser, which I think might have been replaced by a modified Motorola one on the bionic and razr.

A demonstration of the "Can't go "back" in browser to a google search results page" problem.
Watch as I start on the AndroidForums page, go to Google via the factory installed bookmark, perform a Google search, choose a result, view that Wikipedia page, then press the "BACK" soft button on the Droid Bionic and it brings me back to the AndroidForums page.... NOT GOOGLE SEARCH. I then press menu:forward and again skip over the Google Search page, and go straight to the Wikipedia page.
Throughout the video I demonstrate that only one window is open during the entire video.

Perhaps a condition is being set when you leave Search and go to the web page. For some reason when you return from the webpage you return to Google search and it immediately return to the previous page.

My Motorola Atrix just started doing this today! Is making me mad...makes me re-run the search if i clicked a link that wasnt what i was looking for. Perhaps its a ploy to force more data usage! Or perhaps its a virus. Anyone find a solution? Im using stock browser, android 2.3.4. I tried clearing cashe, cookies, and all other clear optio z. Tried turning off plugins too and also rebooted the phone...nothing works!

Sorry ... let me try again ...
I suspect that the problem is with the Google Search website. I suspect that it is setting a condition that is incorrect under some circumstances so that when you return to it it immediately returns to the page that called the search engine.
Page calls Google Search ... you do a search ... it lists a bunch of pages ... you go to a page ... you hit return ... it returns to Google search results page that you came from and it immediatly does a return -2 (it returns to the page that called Google search). (Yes the server can decide how deeply back to return in the chain of pages that called the current page. In this case the count is off.)
This seems like a "feature" in the Google Search website (A.K.A. "bug").
If this assumption is correct, the place to get it addresses is the Google Search help forum. (You may notice that at least one other non-Bionic user is getting the same result.)

I dont think your correct thst its a google search bug. My wifes phone doesn't have the problem. Her's works fine. I think it's a virus of some kind. HAS ANYONE FOUND A SOLUTION?
When you hit the back button and nothing happens, the URL changes back to the search URL, but it doesn't actually load the page. That is what is happening. Watch the video - he hits is a few times before it goes back to the previous page - so, for whatever reason, the URL does change back to the main search you performed but it fails to reload the actual page with the search results.

... and the server can tel if it is called from a mobile device or not which would explain why it is not happening when run from the desktop (it is apparently a bug in the mobile version ).
... and bugs are not always obviously predictable. Given enough time, energy, and money you can usually find the underlying cause for why it is affecting one device and not another. Many times you can't.
... and at least one person reported the behavior in a non-Bionic mobile device.
... and it does not happen when you use your desktop browser.
... and it doesn't happen in websites other than Google Search.
Well Thom you are probably correct but I just dont understand why my wife's phone works fine with the default browser but mine doesn't. However, I believe your right because of the solution I found supports your explaination. SOLUTION: Ditch Google asthe search engine and go with Bing, Dog Pile, or anything but Google and all works great!!!!
for me, this seems to be site dependent, depending on where i am sometimes hitting the back button takes me back 2 screens instead of just one screen (not just in google search either). i just hit menu and then select the forward button. takes me to the right place everytime.
Just want to chime in and say that my Bionic has been doing this as well. Initially with the stock browser,so I did a force stop, clear data, and it did fix the problem. But I also use Dolphin Browser sometimes, and I just noticed it doing the same thing now. This has got to be an Android or Motor Blur issue of some sort I would think, not a Google issue.

I looked in the Applications forum and found nothing. I looked in the Razr forum and found nothing.
Reports are now coming out that it is happening in places other than Google Search (unlike the earlier reports) and this would seem to put it on the Bionic side of the connection.
On my workstation I use the back and foreword mouse buttons for this navigation and use them a lot. It is surprising that there aren't two little overlay buttons that you can turn on on the Browser app screen.
I wonder if it is happening on Internet Explorer on my workstation and since the mouse is so ingrained in what I do ... I simply respond and never am aware of it.

If the reports are solely on the BIONIC, I'd say it is not in the realm of Android, b/c there are literally hundreds of phones running Android, and none of them experience the issue.
We're not even 100% sure that the BLUR on the RAZR is the same as on our phones, so...that would make it very much the realm of Blur, not Android. Blur is app independent.
I dont know what happened but today all is working good. Friday through Sunday it was n't working right and now all is fine. Hope it's good for everyone now too. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I still fail to see what you're implying by saying that - by referring to Android you're making it out to be a problem with the OS itself - and then it would be manifesting system wide - across all devices across all platforms that are running Android. It clearly is not, so I don't see the relevance of referring to Android anything in here - it's BIONIC specific until we see otherwise.

Turning off Instant made it work for me as well. But I only tried limited sites - to give a good check, let's start seeing if certain websites always break the back feature regardless of whether Instant is on or not....
