On the first question, is the background data disabled all the time or only at night. If it's only at night, it may have to do with Moto Assist, which along with battery saver turns off background data during the night (sleep time). In the Assist app you can set the time period you want your phone to go into sleep time.

If background data is off all the time it may have to do with your phone showing as roaming. I believe there is a setting that disables background data when roaming under mobile data settings. That way you don't rack up charges when roaming. The reason it may be roaming (other than an issue with the phone itself) is that if you're in a sketchy signal area, if a tower from another provider has stronger signal it may be going with that tower rather than the lower signal home network tower. Without knowing how long you've lived there, if any newer towers have gone up recently, or if this phone is able to pull a stronger signal from other towers, it's kinda hard to troubleshoot.

On the second question, that happens to me as well. It also happens on the home screen in portrait, & it started after the last update (the one that fixed the camera and other use issues that went out a few weeks ago). Hopefully it'll be fixed on the next update. I assume it has to do with the proximity sensor.
Forcing to CDMA eliminates AT&T & T-Mobile, but Sprint and US Cellular are both CDMA I believe. Might depend on if they have a roaming agreement with Verizon in your area. Otherwise, sounds like its time for a new phone. But don't let them try and make you pay for resolving the issue, this problem is on their end, and if they can't resolve it that would be grounds for terminating your contract (Verizon's contractual responsibility is to provide you with voice and data service, if they can't then they're not upholding their end of the contract). That's all I can think of.

Thanks! They offered me 300 off retail from a phone which doesn't seem fair...

I'm new to AF. Anyone having trouble recognizing if a received text is a group message or not. I have to tap on the message to see if there are any other recipients. It can be a mess to reply to a message and then discover a number of others also got your message. I called VZW. The tech said she is going to contact moto and get back with me tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. I was curious if kit kit solved this since I didn't get the update yet.

The stock messaging app shows the names of all of the recipients and the sender and the number of people involved in the second line at the top header for group messages. If you look at the list of conversations you can see that there is more than one person involved.

Thank you for your response. I see what you are talking about for group messages that I initiate. However, for incoming group texts, I have to tap the message to bring up "message details." Only by looking at "To:" can I see whether or not there are others included in the message.

The VZW tech got back with me today. She said that she contacted Motorola, and they are aware of the issue. Motorola would only hint that the kit kat update MIGHT correct the issue.

I'm thinking Google/Motorola may be looking to increase demand for Hangouts by making the stock messaging weaker. I also believe that no external storage on the maxx increases demand for cloud storage provided by (drum roll please) GOOGLE.
I'm nuts?

That simply is not what I see in messaging on my phone. Almost every group message is one that I received. I rarely initiate them. Do you have the option to turn group messaging into MMS messages turned on in settings? (I have the KitKat update, by the way.)

A curious KitKat difference from the Moto X: recently Google added something called "Auto awesome movies" in the Google+ app for particular phones. It works with KitKat on the Nexus phones and the Moto X, but there is no support for the Droid line on KitKat at the moment. On Christmas Eve I spent some time taking photos and videos, hoping to use this feature, but it doesn't exist (yet?) on the Droids.

Auto-awesome for photos works. I meant the auto-awesome movie feature, that takes still photos and videos taken at the same place and puts together an automatic movie.

See the explanation toward the bottom at https://support.google.com/plus/answer/3113884?hl=en

I was using my Maxx just now and all of a sudden my 4G and network bars turn into an "!" icon. When I checked my data usage page it said that Google Play Music used 1.2 GB (I usually only use the Music app when I'm on wifi). I'm on the 2 GB plan from Verizon (lost my phone, had to use my upgrade and lost my unlimited) so naturally I freaked out.

When I went to the lock screen at the bottom of the unlock pattern the phone said "Emergency calls only - Invalid card" and any time I'd try to dial it'd say "Unregistered on network."

I power cycled the phone and it seems to be working fine and my data usage looks like it's back to normal, but has anyone else experienced this or is it a known issue with the Maxx?

So my maxx is not lasting as long as I think it should. I'm using it alot more than my razr maxx so that may be part of the problem but look at these screen shots and you can tell me if I'm over imagining this. I can't find a way to upload the pictures straight from my phone to this thread.

I guess I should have updated this, but now (as of about a week ago) the Maxx can create auto-awesome movies on the phone.

So here are my screen shots, does this look normal for battery life on how I'm using my phone or is my battery jacked up?

Notice the last photo? You have an app, or some apps, holding the phone awake. I suspect it's dolphin browser, based on the first photo.

If dolphin is actually doing something in the background that whole time, then your battery life looks expected. In other words, if you are listening to music that whole time, and doing it by streaming from dolphin, your battery life looks right.

That hasn't happened to me.

Have you updated to the new active display app in the play store that came out last week?

Default Sensitive power button?

Ok so I've had this phone since Sep. 2013 and it has worked great up until about a week ago. I don't know if this is happening to anybody else, but every time I press the power button to get to my lock screen it will display the options for powering off the device. If I lightly move my finger over the button it will lock or unlock my screen.
Now it even restarts every few minutes from the slightest touch. It is a pain to watch my phone restart when I try to use it. I will probably go to the Verizon store soon, but if anybody has a simple solution I would love the help.

It sure sounds like there is something wrong with the power button. I think going for a warranty exchange is the right idea at this point.

The three buttons at the bottom stopped lighting and stopped functioning. I figured it was a hardware problem after I had tried everything except a Factory Data Reset.

Prior to starting the replacement process I did the Factory Data Reset and they were restored to normal.

I think you should be prepared for a hardware replacement and as the last step there you will di a Factory Data Reset before releasing the phone.

That being the case ... there is nothing lost in doing the Factory Data Reset before starting the process of turning it in.

Good luck.

Thanks doogald that's probably what I'll end up doing. Hopefully they won't give me any problems at the store and hopefully this doesn't happen if I get a replacement...it is an awesome phone.

I have a droid maxx. I don't see that listed. The only ones that update are assist, camera, and contextual services.

I'm not on 4.4 so that's probably why.

FYI to anyone staying on 4.2.2 don't update your motorola assist. It's not compatible.

Thom, I am going to try doing the Factory Reset since all other options wouldn't be useful yet from what a verizon rep told me today. Thanks for the help!

Ok everyone (and Thom especially) I completed the Factory Reset of my DROID Maxx and I haven't had any issues with it so far. Honestly, it seems to be working a bit better even with all of my apps re-installed. So if anybody else ever has an issue with the phone restarting every few minutes and has a sensitive power button the answer is to backup all of your stuff through Google or Cloud first and then just do a factory reset.
Another note to point out is that this all started happening after I did the latest software update. I don't know if that is an issue for the phone itself so just be cautious if you do the update or have already done it.

UPDATE: It has been a day since I did the factory reset and my phone is still restarting every time I touch it or put it in my pocket or purse (wherever the power button can be easily touched.) The other problem is If I go back to Verizon they told me I would only be able to get a refurbished phone as a replacement and not a brand new phone like they've done in the past. That doesn't make me feel happy at all because what if that phone had the same issue?

A new replacement is not part of their warranty. Only by chance it with specific models works you get brand view. Just make sure the refurbished replacement is in good shape with no gaps around the bezel, doesn't creak upon pushing on the back, and you will be fine.

Your resale value will go up dramatically exchanging your defective device for a refurb anyway so be thankful for that.

You may even be lucky and receive one running 4.2.2 which is rootable for most people.

Ug! to refurbished phones. There's a reason they're "refurbished" IMO. I usually love buying refurbished items (Mac computers always), but I've had bad luck with refurbished phones.

I hope you get a good phone. And now that Motorola has been sold? Deal with a company rep or Verizon? Last time I had more luck with the company rep.....

Ok I got my Droid Maxx in early January 2014. It started having issues about a month later with the auto rotate function and active notification display at the same time. If I restart my phone it will temporarily correct the issue but back at it after a few hours. The display issue is when I get a new notification (ie text, email, missed call, etc) it doesn't give me the option to swipe up to open to notification, only allows me to swipe downward to unlock the phone. Notifications are viewable after phone is unlocked. The auto rotate options remains checked at all times, whether it's working or not. I just received a refurbished phone and less than 24 hours after activation, I have the same issues with it. Someone please help! Verizon is having a lot of trouble figuring this out.

On Motorola's forums I read about several people who had the same problem you are describing with an app called POF (which I think is a dating web site.) If you don't have that app, it's another app on your phone that's causing the same thing.

What is interesting is that this problem only occurred when people had the POF app set to show notifications in active display (settings / active display / select apps). What I'd suggest is to go into that setting and just turn on the notifications that you desperately need and see if there is an app like POF (or POF, if you have it) that is causing this to happen.

And, just FYI, there was a bug fix update for active display in the Play Store today.

See https://forums.motorola.com/posts/2ab1ab794c

And, of course, another plan is to start uninstalling apps - say, two or three at a time - and see if the problem recurs. If not, it was probably caused by one of those apps, and you can install them back one at a time to see which one starts the problem again. Then, of course, you uninstall the bad one for good. If those two or three apps didn't solve the problem, reinstall them and try two or three more until you find the bad one.

I suggest you try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them). If the problem stops then it was caused by an app that you added. Since you just got a referb you more than lily reinstalled the bad app.

Just a random thought here... I totally understand people's aversion to refurbished equipment. Just keep in mind that a refurb has undergone much more stringent QC than a new phone does.

Default Maxx shut down

I got my son a Droid Maxx in Jan and I got mine in March. After having a Samsung Galaxy Nexus that wouldn't last till 2PM on a full charge, I am elated with my battery life.

Neither of us have had any problems until this week. My son had his phone in his pocket. When he took it out, it was off and he could not get it to turn on. He finally connected it to his laptop with the USB cord and it turned back on. Oh, and it had 75% battery charge when this happened.

After having this same problem frequently with my Nexus, I DO NOT want to start down that path with this phone that we love so much. Especially since there is no battery to just pop out and pop back in.

Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?

Of course it's impossible to tell why this happened. I've had the phone since August and there was only one time that something like that happened to me - I had mistakenly placed a call and could not power the display back on to cancel it for quite a while.

A few things, though. Unless it's you have nothing else, it's not a good idea to charge from a laptop USB port - frequently, it will not provide enough power to charge the Maxx. I'd use only the stock charger, or any ul listed charger that provides at least 1.2 amps, or 6 watts, like the stock charger does.

It's possible that it's an app that caused that to happen - an app that prevented the phone from sensing button presses on the phone. If it happens again, and I hope it doesn't, it'd be interesting to see what happens if somebody calls his line - does the phone ring?

There is something in the Maxx manual about "cool down" mode (page 29 in the manual). Was the phone physically hot? Maybe the phone was in that cool down mode?

The manual is here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/675626/1377023528/redirect/1/filename/68017543001A.pdf

If the phone is ever unresponsive again, because you cannot do a battery pull, there is an alternative. Press and hold the power and volume up button for 15 seconds - this will do the equivalent of a battery pull. Or, easier, press and hold the volume button for 10 seconds - this does a forced restart.

Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen again. Good luck.

Did you do a Factory Data Reset on both phones after updating to Kit Kat?

I had one unexplained problem that looked like a hardware problem after updating to Kit Kat where the buttons on the screen stopped responding. This was resolved with a second Factory Data Reset. I tried everything else I could think of before doing that second one (I thought it was hardware).

I've been running my Droid Maxx 4.4 for about a month now. I have one annoyance ... partly cuz I can't figure out the solution. Anyone have a thought on how to fix this: I have the "email" app on my home screen. It shows "1" in the little orange box when there is nothing in my email in-box. As I receive mail, it increments correctly, but always one more than are in the in-box. I have dumped the trash, have zero emails in any of the other boxes. It just persists in thinking there's more than there really are. First time this happened, I uninstalled email and reinstalled it. That worked, but it's extra work to reconfigure it. Perhaps there's a better client I should try. Suggestions?

I don't use the email app myself - just the GMail app.

The K9 mail app is pretty nice. Here's the thing, though - I'm not sure it badges itself with the number of unread messages. (You can try it and see if it does, though.)

If it doesn't, and K9 works well for you, if you switch to the alternate launcher Nova Prime, there is a free badger app called Tesla that will badge the K9 mail app (as well as GMail, messages, the stock Moto mail app.)

K9 mail: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fsck.k9

Nova Launcher Prime: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher.prime

Tesla Unread Plugin: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.notifier

I use Nova Launcher Prime and Gmail.

For the Email problem ... did you go to Settings | Apps | All | Email and clear the cache? If that didn't do it did you clear data?

Well, clearing cache didn't change anything. Not sure why the bug, but uninstall/reinstall solves the problem. Inelegant.

A guess ... clearing data might have removed the problem. It was probably done for you during the uninstall/install.

Default Google Maps On the Droid Maxx

Every time I use Google maps on this phone, the app freezes. I notice that I haven't heard any directions for a few minutes. I look down at the phone and it's stuck. I have to reboot the phone. Now I'm lost! When I pick up the phone to reboot it, it's hot. The phone also freezes when I'm playing Candy Crush and Pet Rescue. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it. I tried to re-install Google Maps but I can't uninstall it. Help! Forgot, I'm on the Verizon network.

There's an issue I've come across that causes the proximity sensor to trip when on a call but using any other app. Apparently the sensor works on a call independently of actual usage. This is most noticeable when using the phone in landscape.

Interesting.

I never found the proximity sensor used at all on the Droid Maxx.

I created a Tasker profile (see tlaPocket - turn off in pocket (if call not in progress)monitors the sensor and turns the screen off when sensed unless a call is in progress. It then just leaves it on.

I thought it was odd as I'd Never observed the phone do this before. I've seen the screen turn off when placed in my pocket or held to my face during a call but not while using it.

The Tasker profile I provided fixes the problem and does exactly what you want.

The down side is that you have to run Tasker to run the Tasker profile.

I've only seen that prox sensor issue when I am using the stock launcher that comes with the phone. If I use an alternate launcher - Nova or Action Launcher - I've not seen that happen. Of course that means that you lose the Droid Command Center widget, but I think that looks terrible anyway.

Yes! I just noticed that! On speaker if I try to Swipe down to end call from notifications the screen will shut off. Even in portrait.

You can disable the sensor with Screebl pro.

I think I'm having a similar issue - I just got my Droid Maxx and set it up on Saturday. Yesterday I only got about 14 hours of battery and was down to 11% battery. Today, took the phone off the charger at 100%, used it for the last hour and 40 mins and I'm already at 88% battery. Breakdown says 70% screen, 11% Chrome, and awake time is a full bar like the prior person's screen shots. Granted, I have been using my phone for the last hour and 40 mins searching battery issues because 14 hours yesterday was beyond disappointing and I wasn't on it anymore than I would have been with my old RAZR Maxx, which was getting only slightly less time on a 2-year old battery.

I did just realize that the screen was on auto brightness making it possibly brighter than necessary, and I've been leaving the WiFi on due to Verizon forcing me to give up my unlimited data, but are those two things enough to cut the battery time so much? Yesterday my #1 battery use was talk time at 3 hours, but I thought I was supposed to get 48 hours continuous talk time with this phone, 600 hours stand-by time.

Just trying to figure out if I got a faulty battery or if I just haven't figured out how to master my settings.

If the screen is on, then the phone is awake. The only time to worry about awake time is when the screen is off, you're not using the phone otherwise (such as playing music), and the graph says the phone was awake. That's when you need to figure out which app is holding the phone awake.

The Maxx at the moment uses battery more on 4.4 than it did on 4.2.2. Hopefully the update to 4.4.4 will fix some of these problems.

I assume you got it new from Verizon.

In the short time you have had the phone ... did you do a system upgrade? If you did, did you do a Factory Data Reset after you did the upgrade?

If you did not do a system upgrade or did a system upgrade followed by a Factory Data Reset then you could try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them). If the issue stops then it is caused by an app that you added. Id it doesn't then I would discuss it with Verizon.
