Default battery life

So, in not really having any problems running out of battery but I'm thinking my battery life isn't what it should be. I have unlimited data so I only use Wi-Fi when streaming on chrome cast.... Here are a couple screen shots to look at and see if you guys can see anything I'm missing. Thanks for looking

Screen is on auto brightness, I do not have battery saver on, I'd consider myself a power user (I've use 12gb of data this month) I do stream a lot of music via Google play and a bit of you tube on chromecast. A couple hours of ingress a week

Basically am I seeing typical battery life for a power user?

It looks like you have a lot of screen on time, though it's hard to say, because you're battery screen shots are obviously not all taken at the same time or level.

Just because you have unlimited data it doesn't mean you need to use it. Wifi will use less battery than mobile data. Just use wifi when you can.

That CNN app sure seems to be using a lot of juice. Can you set it to refresh less frequently? The Facebook app is also notorious for wasting battery. I always disable it on my devices and use Chrome or a third-party app (such as Seesmic) if I need to access Facebook.

It can, depending on how often they're set to update

In my own unofficial testing, I have found this and 4G/3G/1X connection to be the most telling pieces of data when it comes to battery life. I normally get 3+ days on a full charge but about 2 weeks ago there was a run of days where I barely got 36 hours. Screen on time for the 3+ days was around 5 hours, for the 36 hour times it was around 5 hours... Turns out, during those days, I was using my phone more than usual and was moving in and out of a part of the building at work where I only got 1X connection. It didn't click until I started looking closer at those charts on the battery screen.

There is no way I could get 3 days of battery life from my phone unless I unplugged it and didn't turn the screen on once while connected to wifi the entire time.

I'm no power user. Most days far less than 2 hours of screen time. I go to bed each night with 40%-50% of my battery left. Doing the math that is 30-40 hours of phone usage with light to moderate use.

Regardless, it's more than I need between charges.

I can go anywhere from 2 to about 5.5 hours of screen on time per day. When I go to bed between 10:30-11PM, it's been off the charger since 6AM, and I will have anywhere from 40-50% left. Rarely will I get into the 30% range, but it has happened. It's possible I can get 2 days out of it, but I would have to milk it for every last drop of juice.

I have a problem. My battery has been terrible for the past few days. I've found the culprit sort of. Media Server is eating a lot of my battery. A lot as in 20-30% everyday. Currently it had my phone awake for more than 5 hours. Any idea what media server is?

It's anything that plays multimedia content - music or video - both locally stored or especially streaming.

How do I get it to disconnect and keep it from staying awake constantly?

Hmm, this is a good question. It was my understanding of the Chromecast is that the Chromecast device itself actually gets the video from the streaming service when you "cast" media to it, with the exception of sending video from a Chrome PC browser tab. However, the device that cast the media - your phone in this case - controls play/pause, rewind, fast forward, etc. controls. So, I'd say that if you are actively sending content to the Chromcast, the phone will have to stay awake.

I haven'y used my phone (yet) to cast anything - I always use my iPad, for obvious reasons (well, it has a huge battery mostly.)

If you are not sending media to a Chromecast but the phone is being held awake, well, that's a problem. I'd try restarting the phone.

Which app are you using for Chromecast? (There aren't many supported apps that I know of - YouTube, Netflix, Google Play apps, Hulu+ - though a bunch are supposed to be added today/soon.) Maybe it's an app issue?

I don;t see how the original question relates to ChromeCast.

I had not turned ChromCast on since recharging and the app was not listed. I ran YouTube in ChromeCast and it still did not appear.

My ChromeCast required me to establish a connection between it and my router.

To answer the question of participation ... while displaying a YouTube video I powered off my Maxx. After a few minutes I powered t back on. The video never stopped. It seems that the data transfer has no relation to my Maxx and my Maxx only participates to send control information when needed.

There are references to the original problem in the X2 forum and one person "solved" it by just letting it run for three days and then it disappeared.

Interesting.

Right, but was there a wakelock at the time? If you look at battery settings and tap on the graph, is the phone listed as awake at the time you were casting? Awake does not necessarily mean screen on - the screen can be off but the phone can be held awake to access internet content, etc.

The Chromecast app for Android is only used to set up the device for your WiFi network. You actually cast video by using the Chromecast control in any of the media apps that support it (Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, Google Play). I'd suggest trying to shut down any multimedia apps that are running. You can also try downloading GSAM battery to see if that will show you which app is calling mediaserver.

However, I'd think that restarting the phone will actually shut down whatever is running short term.

Wait, I thought of something else... If I'm not mistaken, android launches a process to scan your storage for media files. If there is a corrupted media file, the system can get stuck in a loop scanning the bad file. Did you add any music or video files lately?

If you have bejeweled blitz uninstall it. Keeps media server running for some reason. I would be down to 70 after 5 hours off and now I was only down to 93.

I don't have that installed. However, my battery is doing much better today. Media Server isn't running. I never figured out what it was though.

I have been running Pandora while at work a LOT lately (like 5 hours a day) and a little Youtube, and my media server is through the roof (at 22% now). I was 100% around 6am and now I'm at 50% at 3:30pm with 2 hours of screen time, so I'd say media server is crushing me as well.

I mentioned before ... from the X2 ... it was reported that it was a problem ... it seems to be a maintenance function that runs in the background checking all media ... it was reported that a person was having the problem and let it run for three days and has not seen the problem since.
