It's time to upgrade from my Droid X, which I've really loved but who's battery now lasts approximately 45 minutes if I use the phone at all. I have to leave it plugged into a charger all day and carry a portable charger with me just in case.

The Maxx HD looks like a great choice all around except for the camera quality, which has been panned badly on CNET. My question, is it about the same as the Droid X, better, or worse?

If it's worse, it would definitely be a deal breaker. I use my phone a lot for pictures just because it's convenient. I think the outdoor pictures come out really well but most indoor low-light/flash pictures are pretty grainy.

I definitely want to stay with Android so if the camera is an issue, would something else be a better choice?

Also what is the difference between the Maxx and Maxx HD except for a slightly longer battery life in the latter? I had read that the screen breaks easily on the Maxx -- does the Maxx HD have the same issue?

Well, i just took a look at the earlier thread where people had posted pictures. The indoor shots are not the best, but they are definitely no worse than the Droid X pictures -- probably better, but without a side-by-side comparison of the same scene it's hard to tell.

I also read about some of the other phones, such as the HTC DNA. Although people seemed to love the camera on that one, it really doesn't seem to compare to the Maxx HD in other areas.

Looks like I'll be going with this one.

I can't comment on the Droid X vs HD Razr cameras but I will say it sounds about the same. Outdoor pictures come out pretty good but indoor pictures are dark and grainy and takes a while for the auto focus to focus.

I came from a Galaxy Nexus and the camera was phenomenal both indoor and outdoors. The camera on the Galaxy Nexus 3 is around the same lines as far as quality goes. If you want a better camera that phones a no brainier.

There is no difference between the HD and the HD Maxx other than battery size and the Maxx is a bit thicker. All the HD Razrs have gorilla glass and I haven't hear of any breaking.

I chose the the HD Maxx over the S3 because of the battery life. If you want to run your phone with all the bells and whistles that android has to offer this phone will do it and you won't have to worry about your battery going dead before the day is over.

Thanks for the feedback. After reading many posts in these forums I've gone ahead and ordered this phone. Maybe one of the camera apps will help.

It's massively, massively better than the Droid X camera. The Razr HD's camera is not as good as the Galaxy S3 or iPhone 5 camera but it's still better than most phone cameras of the past.

That is very likely. I think Camera Zoom FX is significantly better than Camera. Keep in mind ... we are talking about a phone bell-and-whistle and not a Hasselblad.

I just got my Maxx HD today. Coming from a Droid 2 Global one of my main concerns was the camera. I'm happy to report the Maxx HD's camera seems to be much, much better. I've taken some shots in low light and while they are somewhat grainy (aren't most cell phone pics in low light?) they're way better than the D2G.

Here's one of my feet while lying on the couch. All camera settings on automatic. Phone screen was tapped to focus on my feet.

Most of the people are shooting in complete darkness or with a sigle 60W bulb 50 feet away that make the assumption the camera is bad...

Even a $5,000 dslr won't do anything good in that situation.

I think the camera is just fine, and I'm a long term photog.
