I would agree with whoever told you that. grey means you're connected to wifi, but there's no IP address assigned to you.
I had a massive problem with that when connected to my N network. I kicked it to G and no more problems. only tradeoff is the speed (perceived for the most part) and the wifi signal strength.
btw, there is 100% nothing verizon can do to impact your wifi radio. well, other than approve a software update that does something. there are no settings on the verizon side to give you more or less wifi service.
