Default This camera sucks, anyone having luck with a better camera app

I am tired of 1 out of 20 pictures actually looking half decent. I previously had a Galaxy Nexus and the camera was fast and took pretty decent pictures. any ideas on a app to make this camera better?

Thanks for the help.

I have tried ZoomFX and Camera FV-5. Both have more controls but unfortunately the image quality was not as good as the stock app. I've stuck to using the stock app. I have wanted to try "Shot Control" app but I'm hesitant to try it considering these other two apps did not improve the camera.

The RMHD camera gets a bad rap. Though not a stellar camera I find it to be miles better than my Droid 2 Global camera. Make sure to tap the screen on the area you want the camera to focus on before you take the shot. Be aware of lighting conditions, this camera does not like low light.

Here is some objective data on camera quality of cell phones. Although this table does not have Maxx HD listed, the Razr Maxx is listed and I presume the Razr Maxx uses the same camera as the RMHD.

I only notice two things - the iphone is brighter, and the galaxy is a little bluish.

On a personal note, I've never had any problems with my camera. I'm coming from a Casio Commando, and the camera with that was good for me, too. Of course, maybe I just have bad eyes...

If you can only get 1 out of 20 pictures to look good, it's not the camera - it's you! I don't think a camera app is going to help.

Well I guess from what your saying I forgot how to use a camera from a Android phone, but I have not had a problem with the last 10 Android phones I have had. I don't think so.

Agreed with Yama. Even miniscule movement and you get blur. Take 2-3x as long as previous RAZR to take a pic. Change to portrait... helps a little.

Talking

I literally just walked around my house and took fast pictures of random objects in different light with flash on and off and I had one out of focus photo because I had forced the flash off and it was too dark to focus. The rest of the photos were in perfect focus.

Is the RMHD a great camera? No. Is it a horrible camera? No. I guess those of us for whom the camera is 'good enough' and otherwise love this phone are just really tired of hearing people complain how completely horrible, awful, useless, crappy, the camera is. BUY A DIFFERENT PHONE!

That's funny, because I do this all the time. That's how I got the shots in the "Camera Complainers" thread. I'm always trying to find a way for this phone to take a crappy picture and I'm usually unsuccessful. I did have a close-up shot of a white object in a room underlit with flourescent lighting where the flash did not sync with the shutter and the resultant photo was not as bright as I would have liked, but everything was clear, not blurry.

If you're having trouble taking a good photo with the RMHD, I'd take my phone into a Verizon store or Best Buy and ask a sales rep to try to take a few shots. If they come out looking OK, you know the problem is not the phone...

Here's a example of what I'm talking about. I have more but the size is to large to upload. The others are daytime and good light just as fuzzy.

That photo set up is bound to produce a lousy picture. It's a low light situation, the subjects are backlit, what little light available is far away, and no flash is used. You should have set the camera to night portrait and set flash to on (preferred) or turned up the exposure adjustment. I doubt any mobile phone camera would have taken a good picture under these conditions.

I'd like to see some of your pics that were taken in good lighting. Could you resize the image(s) and post some?

Well, I kinda figured that is what auto was for. I usually just touch the screen and let it focus and change it's own settings. Is that not what you are doing?

I use Auto probably 90% of the time but sometimes there are situations where you have to change it from Auto. Your photo is a good example. The camera sensor is seeing enough light from the cruise ship that it tells the camera the flash is not needed. The light from the cruise ship is tricking the camera sensor.

Also, unless the person shooting the picture tapped on the screen where the two people are appearing the camera is going to focus at the distance where most of the light is present. That's the cruise ship. Indeed, you can read the name of the ship fairly clearly.

Finally, since this is a low light scene and flash wasn't activated you will see grainy photos.

Any camera phone set to auto with the flash not activating would have given you a lousy picture under these conditions. In fact, any point-and-shoot camera on auto would have given a lousy picture.

Get to know how to use your camera in these low light situations and you will get much better shots. In these situations I make use of the exposure control a lot. Turn it up to +1.5 or so. Or set the flash to ON. Tip: When in auto flash mode if you tap the screen to set the focus point the camera will also let you know if the flash is going to come on by briefly showing the flash. If you tap the screen prior to the actual shot and the flash doesn't show, and you think conditions are such that you want the flash, you then know to turn the flash to On.

Play around with your camera, you can always erase the pics.

I bet those of you who think this camera is great...don't have kids!!! Even I can take spectacular stills with this phone. Try to get the pic you want or "the moment" with this camera and you're just SOL. It is the camera and not the operator too. I had two bberrys before this phone and they both took higher quality action/moment photos than this camera, although the rmhd cam is far superior on stills. If the rmhd cam has time to focus and adjust before the shot, pic quality is as good as it gets for any phone IMO.

I think the stock camera does suck. I often find pictures out of focus. It takes 5 tries to take a picture of a serial number with an 8 font. It does a little better with the quick shot camera with lightbox on my phone. I wasted $2.99 on camera fx. It's no better than stock for me because I don't care about special effects. I just want my photos in focus.

I miss my Galaxy Nexus camera, took fast pictures, and not to bad in low light. Send a complaint to Motorola they say they haven't had any problems with it.

Sunshine? Try 5 times with indoor light with flash and without. Maybe my phone camera is broken.... Except it DOES focus with quick shot camera so it can't be broken hardware.

I really hate that. Motorola and VZW ALWAYS deny even hearing one complaint about even the most common issues. I know the Motorola website has dozens of complaints so they are aware. In the website they so "oh, only a few complaints from thousands of users" but of course few users even know about their website. If they never ADMIT a problem they never need to address it.

I don't know what to say. I took these two photos indoors on a cloudy, snowy day. First one with no flash, second one with flash on. Newspaper was propped up on my knee. One shot at each attempt.

You either have better lighting or a better phone. Mine often doesn't even focus on close print with indoor light. The picture isn't dark but is out of focus. If I turn on flash the text is whited out by glare.

Are you tapping the screen of your phone in the area you want the camera to focus prior to activating the shutter?

One thing for sure, the RMHD (and RHD) could use image stabilization in the next update.

Of the three, unfortunately I definitely found the Razr Maxx to be the worst, with muddy colors, and iPhone the best.

You're assuming that someone on the phone (probably making close to minimum wage) is doing research on the internet about a phone they may or may not have! If it's not in the script or in whatever KB software they have, it doesn't exist for them.

This camera, without a doubt, is consistently HORRIBLE, other than still shots. My sister's old iphone takes the best pictures of my grandkids. I don't understand why Apple can put a great camera on their phones and Motorola can not? If the camera wasn't so bad, everybody would want a Razr. That might seem petty to some. But the camera is one of the most important features to some people. And that is their opinion. So you have to ask yourself, 'does a long battery life and flexibility matter more to me than having a great camera that is handy at all times?" I'm keeping my Razr, with some regret.

It took me a little while to learn the different settings on this camera. But now it's taking good pictures. It just took a little work. Actually the features on this camera are very good..

That's a good idea. Haven't tried it on this phone though. Used it a couple times on my old Droid X. What I like best about fast burst is the setting where it takes one quick pic per tap.

Are you talking about a 3rd party app or the stock camera, can't figure out what youre talking about. Is fast burst a setting on an app or the stock camera, cause I don't find it on my stock. Though I'm still using ICS not JB.

Again...is this a 3rd party app or part of the stock camera? If it is a 3rd party app, please share what the app is and how to get it. Thanks.

Stock camera has it, both ICS and JB. Tap on Modes, then Multi-Shot.

I think the camera takes ok pics. Not great, not bad. Just ok.

Looking at the pic details on my laptop, i noticed that the pic sharpness setting is set to low. Not sure why moto would have the sharpness set to low, but they do. Are there any phone apps or computer programs that are fast and easy to use when it comes to just increasing sharpness? I know something like photo shop is out there, but i dont wanna pay that much to just simply sharpen pics.

Just have to play with the settings. Is this camera great? No, but it's decent. The first pic I took was in very low light, auto settings, no flash. The second pic was the same low light, on HDR, and no flash. Big difference.

I just joint this forum (but an old member on another one), and I agree on the poor camera quality of the Razr HD.
I got the XT925 model from Canadian Rogers, with bootloader unlocked & rooted.
I installed the Nexus 4 apk camera app on my phone and there is an improvement on the picture quality (not much, but a visible one)

What good is a camera if you don't have enough battery life to do anything with it? I know we all want the *BEST* of everything, but for me, this phone's battery life, great display, function, form etc. is FANTASTIC. Could the camera be better? I'm sure it can. But I bought phone...not a camera. I have my Canon DSRL and Olympus micro 4/3rds to use as a camera.

For me, the camera is more than good enough......especially considering that it's a phone/txt/app/game/trip-organizer.

Today's smartphone lost theirs true purpose as a phone only. Now when you purchase a phone you want a full multimedia package to be there, including a reasonable quality camera. And it's not much to ask from Motorola especially since good quality phone cameras are already mass produced by companies such as Google (LG), Samsung, Sony...etc.
The technology to manufacture a good camera phone is out there, however, Motorola's choice to give us, the consumer, a lousy below par camera in the Razr HD is ludicrous.
It's not acceptable (in my mind) to say that everything in the phone work properly, accept the camera..?

I had two bberrys before this phone and they both took higher quality action/moment photos than this camera, although the rmhd cam is far superior on stills. If the rmhd cam has time to focus and adjust before the shot, pic quality is as good as it gets for any phone IMO.

Agreed!!! I have a 6 month old and whipping a camera of phone out when hes doing something funny or cute, he instantly stops. So i needed somethign WAYYYY quicker then the stock camera. I downloaded the Fast burst and hopefully that helps. Havent tried it on him yet, but so far it takes pics pretty quick.

More about Razr HD camera...
A short while back I had 6 cameras apps on my Razr HD !
Now, I got only 4...
- 2 are apk files (my phone is rooted & bootloader unlocked): the Nexus 4 android 4.2 version & a customized miui camera.
- 2 are from the Google store: Snap camera & Camera ZOOM FX.
Out of the 4, I will possible keep the Snap & the 4.2 Camera.
The two are a much improved cameras quality over the stock one.

You cannot compare a multi purpose device with a stand alone camera (I know you didn't, but it seems like others want DSLR like quality) . I have zero issues with my RMHD camera. Works just fine for me. But when compared to my DSLR, it's not as good. But I wouldn't expect it to be as good as my DSLR. To *me*, it's no different than any other smartphone's camera. I understand others are having issues, but to date, I've had no issues. Samsung camera is a bit faster, but RHMD (again, to me) is fast enough. I would gladly take this camera if it meant giving up battery life so the phone can house a better camera. I'm not saying that's the case, I'm just just to me, phone, internet, battery life is much higher priority than a camera.

Stock camera can switch between 8 MB to 6 MB. It's on the Setting button.

Alright, well that failed miserably Here are those pics that didn't show up before, along with some newer ones. It's a decent camera once you figure out how to use it. Not great, but decent. Is it good in low light? Not particularly, but how many phone cameras are good in low light honestly?

Sorry if anyone's screens go crazy. I left these at full res so you guys could really inspect them. They resize quickly on my laptop
