Default Google Talk not working

So, new owner here. Google talk won't sign in. When I open the app, It says I am offline but when i go to sign in, it "looks" like it is signing me in, shows all my friends, including me all grayed out with an x by my name. When I click the menu button it has the option for me to signout, I click that and it goes back to saying I am offline. I don't get it. I have googled this problem but I haven't found anyone else who seems to have this problem. Also, I have "signed in" I am gray and so are my friends, at the same time I was on the computer signed in and some of my gray friends were green. So confused. Tried restarting phone, unsyncing then resyncing also.
