Default Can I take an active SIM from another phone and use it in my new Droid X?

First post, hoping for your insight.

Long story short, I'm part of my father-in-law's family plan with AT&T. I pay $20 per month for unlimited calls and texts ($20 is how much it cost to add my line to his plan). However, my phone is a rinky-dink F160 (it was free with the new line).

Now, I just bought a no-contract Droid X to replace my recently broken iPhone, which I was only using for Wi-Fi and music storage. This morning, I had an idea... would it be possible to take the SIM card out of my F160 and put it into my new Droid X?

My goal is to make calls and texts from the Droid X so that I don't have to carry around two phones. I'm totally fine with rooting or any other procedure I would need to perform to make this work (I hope it's kosher to ask about that sort of thing on this forum). What do you guys say?

As far as I know, the X doesn't use a SIM card. Unless it's some where in the inner workings of the phone that you would have to tear the phone apart to get to.

SIM cards are only used in GSM phones and the Droid X is CDMA. They are completely different network technologies.

Understood. Thank you so much. Here's a follow-up question.

If I were to get a barebones plan from Verizon (just texts and calls), could I use my Droid X without having to sign up for an expensive data plan? I'd just like to use Wi-Fi and store my music on the same phone I call/text with.

Unfortunately no. Once you activate the DX, the Verizon system would recognize it as a smartphone and automatically add a data plan to your bill.

You can sign up with a carrier like Page Plus Cellular. I am using a Droid X
with their TnT 1200 plan. You get 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, and 100mb of date per
month for $29.95. NO taxes at all.............just $29.95.
I am around wifi 99.9% of the time so data usage is not a problem. I use Droidwall
app to keep data usage to a minimum.
No contracts and best thing is you get to use the VZW network

+1 for Page Plus. I have 3 Android phones on Page Plus, all with data use blocked by the carrier. They all work fine this way.

Does the service work away from major towns and highways?

I find that it works everywhere VZW does. The roaming though would be much more expensive so one would have to be careful about that

Again, thank you guys so much for weighing in on my questions. I checked out Page Plus, and I'm pretty impressed. The TnT 1200 plan looks perfect for me. I'm assuming you can sign up for that plan with any phone? What about an unlocked iPhone (my wife's)?

No............the iphone is off limits i think. 99% of phones that work with VZW will work with Page Plus. No iphone or any pay per month phone.

Try going to this link to see a Wiki of the plans and get answers to all your questions

Okay, I have my Droid and it's up and running with Liberty. Now for Page Plus. I did some research, but I didn't find much about activating the phone with PP. If you remember, my phone doesn't have a contract, so should I enter my dumb phone's number in the blank provided? Also, when I try to activate the Droid X on the PP website, I'm asked to select my phone model--Droid X isn't listed.

How did you activate your Droids on PP?
