Default International Travel - Japan

I'm going to Japan and will be using my phone.
Already called Verizon to get the international calling plan, but I want to make sure I don't get hit with data charges. Phone use is strictly going to be calling only and possible text use.
Question is, if I disable Background Data and disable the Data Enable feature, will that completely turn off my data or will I still be having some data get in through the background?
Will txting still work if the data is off?
Other than following basic directions I'm not that tech savy so I need simple answers and solutions.... I just want to make sure I don't get burned by the time I get home.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks.
