INSURANCE...It's usually pushed at you when you buy your phone for the first time. And once you root your phone as I did it voids any warranty covered by asurion....

Unless you go back to stock when you need to file a claim. If your phone is rooted and something is wrong with it and you want to file a claim just unroot. THen send it back in.

I'm killing my Asurion tomorrow. If they're going to replace my Droid with an Eris, NO THANK YOU. I'd prefer to just buy a new Droid off eBay and keep on truckin'...

Insurance != warranty.

If you pay the $80 deductible, they'll send you a 'new' phone.

i may be wrong, but you may have insurance and warranty mixed up. rooting your phone voids your warranty, but as far as insurance i don't think rooting affects that claim

I'm not sure if Asurion cares about rooted phones but if you have to file a claim just tell them you lost the phone.

Now now - we are not recommending insurance fraud here. But when a phone is dropped in water it does become hard to tell if it was rooted.

Exactly. Or if you loose it, why would it matter if it was rooted or not.
Warranty and Insurance are 2 completely different things.

I have had to use Asurion twice back in the day when I still carried my Treo650/700 phones. Both times they sent me refurb units that were likely cleaned up in China and slapped with an Asurion sticker inside the battery compartment. Seemed to work fine, but both times I was forced to tell them I physically dropped the phone. They will almost never replace the phone for software defect, only for physical defect. Am still carrying Asurion on my Droid & Eris which were bought in Jan this year, not had to use it yet and will likely cancel soon. Like *all* insurance policies, they don't like fulfilling claims, they make money when *risk* (e.g. claims) is low, so they stall and hem 'n haw when you file claims.

I have read multiple posts here and in blogs announcing the change, but why would anyone "accidentally" on purpose break or lose their MotoDroid? This is the best phone I have ever had and I wouldn't "break" or "lose" my droid just to get a crappy htc phone or a locked-down droid x.

My 2 cents.

Sorry, but insurance isn't the same as warranty. Warranty only covers hardware issues, and possibly software issues that can't be resolved.

Insurance covers accidental damage, and lost/stolen phones.

as i just posted in the other thread... my droid went missing last thursday. called friday. got my new moto droid today. they just got a shipment of NEW droids. i dont think they will be shipping the x as a replacement anytime soon.

I've had insurance for years and used it a few times both before and after Assurion was involved. Works as promised and seems to be a cleaner way to get back in action vs the ebay route.

Nice to see they will be giving the X's at some point but not surprised they have done it before with the Treo's - think I had a 600 that they upgraded to a 650 or 700. Worth having the insurance.

I should probably clarify what I was saying. The Incredible is crappy, at least in my opinion. I have a coworker who let me play with her incredible and I hated it. It lagged compared to my Droid and I really hate the Sense UI. In fact, she got so sick of her Incredible that she just sold it and bought a Droid again because she likes the Droid better.

The Droid X is not crappy (it is actually a really nice phone), but it is locked-down. I don't like the idea that someone would go that far just to keep people from installing custom ROM's. If we want to root and install a custom ROM and void our warranty, then that is our choice. So why go so far to keep us from doing it? If the X wasn't so tightly locked down, or if someone finally breaks that encryption, I would definitely consider it to be better that the Droid. Mainly because custom Rom's could be installed and it could be running vanilla Andorid and not have all that bloatware.

I'm not saying that the Droid is right for everyone, but I truly believe that it is the better of the three, at least for right now.

If you are serious about selling your Droid, I may be interested. That is assuming the price is right. I wouldn't need all the accessories, but have been trying to find a decent droid for testing purposes.

If you are just screwing with me because of my statement and don't really want to sell your Droid, well there's not much I can do about it then. However, please keep in mind that I never attached anyone who owns either of these phones. I simply stated my opinion.

Overboard, maybe a little. However, I truly think that the original Droid is much better than the Incredible and the X. Yea, maybe they are superior to the Droid while stock in terms of hardware (processor, etc), but both have a butt load of bloatware and neither have vanilla Android. To me, that make the Droid a much better phone.

I'll keep my Droid as long as I can (hopefully until my upgrade next summer), but if it does break, I could probably live with a Droid X until upgrade. Not so crazy about the Incredible personally...

Insurance and a warranty are indeed not the same. However, IIRC the $7.99/mo "insurance" includes an extension of the warranty. So rooting may in fact void that part of the coverage.

Has anyone actually been denied a warranty replacement because they were rooted?

I had a rooted Eris, took it in and they swapped it. Sold the freshly refurbished Eris and got me this used Moto Droid.

Voided warranty? I think not

I just took in my Droid; rooted and ROM'd and all the Verizon Tech said to me was how impressed he was with the speed of the Droid compared to his. He then gave me a number to call for replacement because they didnt have any phones in stock to give me. This was through the warranty of Verizon and not asurion coverage...
