Default Gmail notifications

is anybody else not getting notifications when they have new emails?
My droid isnt. I have to go in and click refresh to get new emails to show up.

my gmail tell's me there's no connection "retry" but it won't connect..not sure what's going on with that.

If one alert has come in & I don't look immediately, then subsequent new email does not sound the alert until I go look at the email. Then the alerts pick up again.
