I'm a droid newbie but it says that the music player can play AAC files so... that's Apple's format right?

We should be good.

Unless something has changed in iTunes recently (and it might, I don't use it too much) it does not support syncing to non-Apple devices. So I would expect no direct sync from iTunes to the Droid.

Also, the droid won't play any DRM audo files, so unless you've purchased the unlocked versions of songs (DRM removed) they also won't play.

I'm not as clear on formats...I don't know if the Droid will play the native format used by iTunes or not (assuming no DRM).

iTunes will not work with the Droid. As soon as iTunes start to work with a non apple device, Apple releases an update to fix that.

That is just one of many reasons I hate iTunes!

Right i understand about the sync thing,

but what about copying over my itunes music?

It says that it supports AAC format. and it's paid for songs... so it should be able to play it right?

I am not sure if this works or not (I have never tried it), but I have heard of something call iTunes agent which will sync non iPods with iTunes.

iTunes Agent

Quick FYI, for mac users that don't like Doubletwist and want something like iTunes Agent (Windows only) Google search for SyncTunes. It is a no longer developed sync client (read: Mac version of iTunes Agent) that you can still find download links for.

Is anyone having any trouble syncing a droid with DoubleTwist or Salling Media Sync?

I've tried both on my Macbook, and every time I try to sync (which takes about 30 minutes for a lot of songs) both my laptop and phone freeze. I have to reboot my laptop, and reset my phone by pulling out the battery. I've seen suggestions for media monkey and songbird, but I just wanted to know if I'm the only one?

I started using this and really like it. Doubletwist worked, but it's really slow. Salling has deep hooks into iTunes so it really feels well integrated.

Okay, so then there's either something wrong with my Droid (USB Mounting, or some apps I've installed that aren't compatible, or something...)

Or, I guess there could always be something wrong with my laptop.

Any ideas to try?

Did you mount the phone when you connected it to the puter? Do you at least see the new drive when connected to your Mac?

Yep So here's what I normally see/do:
1) Plug the USB from the phone to the computer
2) Pull down the notification bar and mount it
a) At this point it shows up as "No Name" on the computer
3) I can open "No Name" and see the folders that are on it (and create a new folder -- like "Music"). One time, I tried deleting all of my music out of this folder and my laptop and phone froze.
4) The device will show up in DoubleTwist, and I click and drag a playlist onto it (it is correctly recognized as the Motorola Droid).
5) Most of the time it at least starts copying music, but then at some point it just stops. And both my phone and laptop will freeze. If I try and navigate to "No Name" it appears to be empty in finder, and it won't even let me eject it. Also, I have to Force Close DoubleTwist and restart finder to restore functionality.
6) I then try and unmount the USB from the notification area on the Droid, but when I choose to do that, the result is no change. I can click on unmount a gazillion times and it doesn't make a difference. The only thing I can do at that point is pull the batter out to restore functionality.

Thanks for taking the time to read Any help would be most appreciated!

Wow, you sound like you did everything I did. So just to double check when you slide your finger from the top of the screen down you see "USB Connected". Is that right? I wish I had an answer for you. Mine worked the first time. I just connected mine and it says "USB Connected....select files to transfer from your computer"

Yep That's the same thing I see. It almost seems like the the USB drive is becoming unresponsive after a certain amount of time. I'm not sure if something is timing out, or it's trying to copy some file over that it doesn't like, or what.

Well -- if you think of anything let me know. Or, if anyone out there has seen or heard of anything like this, I'd really appreciate any help!

I am having the same exact issue. I have tried both salling sync and doubletwist and both freeze up during transfer of songs. I am able to copy over my whole itunes directory by dragging and dropping, but I want a program that can sync.

I am under the impression Droid does not support Itunes downloads, which is fine with me. Anyone know if we can set up playlists on the droid?

I thought doubletwist was freezing also. Then I decided to wait. A very very long wait but it did finish the transfer. This did not happen on all song transfers.
I was transferring a lot of files so I decided to try a few at a time. Still saw the occasional long delay.

I used Doubletwist to upload my music too, and WOW it took forever, I didn't time it, but it was at least an hour, could have been too. I knew after the first try when the progress bar moved 1/8 of an inch in 15 minutes it was going to be a LONG haul. But it did work, but man hope you have time to leave your phone hooked up for HOURS!

I did end up syncing to my SD card using a card reader directly plugged in via USB, instead of through the phone, but it took about 3 hours to do about 3GB of music on DoubleTwist. It at least went faster (when it worked) when I went directly through my phone.

I think I'm going to try Motorola MediaLink on my Windows box and see if I have the same problems, so then I can at least narrow the problem down to being my phone, or OS/Syncing app.

I've had the same freezing issue with doubleTwist, Salling and SongBird with FolderSync.

Does anyone know if Motorola has any plan to address this issue?

The Motorola app doesn't suck completely. It also deals with video conversion and lifting photos from the phone for you.

It WILL synch with your iTunes, including preserving playlists. I'm talking non DRM. Not sure what happens if there's DRM from iTunes store.

Now, I swear it brought over Audible but I need to do more testing.

Unfortunately, the Moto app and DoubleTwist do not work well with a NAS setup. All my music is stored on a shared drive and these two just don't like that. Trying Salling now.

At this point, I'm installing Media Link on my PC and copying my iTunes library over from my Macbook and hoping that works. If that fails, then I'm just getting an SDHC card reader and a pitchfork.

The reader to transfer files manually or write a script for playlists.
The pitchfork is for Verizon until we get a solution that doesn't require taking out the battery.

I'm in the same boat here, all media is stored on my server and accessed via shared drives (unc path). Had the same issue with my BlackBerry where their sync solution would not work either with shared drives.

Let us know if the Salling solution works for remote storage.

Do they not show up or are they just slow? If you're talking iTunes, try checking just a few music files and uncheck the rest. In other words try a smaller set.

If they don't show up, map a drive letter instead of UNC. You may have already tried all of these.

And then be patient while it tries a few files. Also, apps that rely on your SD may freak out when SD is mounted so you may want to kill them first. I was getting 5 tweets a second FFS. I'm not your mommy. I have no worms.

During a transfer it is fetching album art and converting file format. The question is, is it slow or does it just crash no matter what?

I did 13GB of file transfers direct in less than 30 mins but I'm too lazy to try a shared drive tonight.

I didn't download a THING for iTunes. I just connected and mounted the phone to my pc, created a music file and a ringtones file on the sd card, then dragged and dropped.

THEN I uses Ringdroid to create ringtones using the music I copied.

I played the files on the music player just to see if they would play on the music player. They played just fine.

Maybe you all are making this to complicated. The first night I had my Droid, I used the drag and drop between itunes and a new folder on my desktop. Then to my Droid folder and it worked. When I view the folder on my computer the songs are in a list but on my Droid music player they are listed by album.

I've also been able to drag and drop directly from itunes to the Droid folder when mounted. I downloaded DoubleTwist, but I have never used it.( Every time I open itunes it pops up to sign in but I close it) so I don't know if this is why I am able to do this.

I've also been able to drag and drop directly from itunes to the Droid folder when mounted. I downloaded DoubleTwist, but I have never used it.( Every time I open itunes it pops up to sign in but I close it) so I don't know if this is why I am able to do this.
for me that would take too long. I have thousands of songs. and now I have about 500 that need to added.

Let us know if the Salling solution works for remote storage.
Salling worked perfectly! And it was painfully easy to use. You load the app, plug in your Droid, tell it which iTune playlists you want to synch (geneous and smart list too), and synch. TuneWiki rebuilt the library and I was good to go. I synched it over night. The only thing it doesn't do is video - which I wouldn't do anyway.

I love lightweight programs that just work... god knows why I still use iTunes.

Not sure yet if it will work or not since my Driod is being delivered today. I do know that when doing a similar type of sync with my BlackBerry it does not work.

The issue is that my music in iTunes is using a UNC path and not a direct mapped drive. This caused any playlist created to show as unavailable. If I create a local drive playlist it all works. I prefer to use UNC paths and not map a drive letter since it is easier to manage and update if moved to another system.

Not too worried about it as I don't let iTunes manage the physical layout of my library and I am pretty anal about how my music is structured via genres, folders, files names, etc.

I actually tried taking the phone to a Verizon Wireless store and that was no help (they didn't even test the error, the dumb**** just turned on "debug mode" under the Settings->Applications->Development menu. That didn't work nor is it supposed to. But I digress.

I've tried selecting a block of folders in Finder, copying and pasting them into my mounted Droid's SD card. I got to ~1.49 GB the first time before it froze, and 561MB the second time.

It still freezes. On doubleTwist's forums, one of the admins noted that they've had the same problem and can only assume its an issue with a handful of the first shipment of Droids. He said he got his replaced and now the new one works just fine. Honestly, that's the next step for me and if the Verizon store refuses, I'm going with Plan Pitchfork.

Default Syncing iTunes to Droid using Salling Media Sync on Vista PC

Not pretty.

I have iTunes and manage about 8gb of music, podcasts, etc. for my iPod, proir to purchasing the Droid.

I downloaded Salling Media Sync (free version) and installed on my PC (running Vista Home Premium). No problem installing Salling Media Sync.

First time I sync'd my iTunes library to the Droid, all my music, playlists and podcasts transferred no problem (8mb transferred in about 1 hr, as others on this forum indicated).

When I went to the Droid, all the music were properly and neatly organized by artist, album and playlist. HOWEVER, much of my album art did not transfer over. Doing some investigating, I learned that any albums or music that I loaded from CD-ROM and then downloaded the album art from iTunes, THAT album art did not transfer. Album art only transferred for music where (a) I purchased and downloaded music from iTunes, or (b) I loaded music from CD-ROM then manually added my own album art using iTunes... It's all cosmetic - some of you may not care about album art - but I like it and I want it. You won't get it with Salling Media Sync...

Then, when using Salling Media Sync (free version) to UPDATE my Droid to reflect recent changes to my iTunes library, sure enough the sync process froze, and the display on my Droid stopped working. I had to do a "force close" of Salling Media Sync and remove the battery from the Droid to get it working again.

Once I re-booted by Droid, the backlit buttons below the device display (Back, Menu, Home, Search) now only light up intermittently. Turning the Droid off and on doesn't help. Nice...

Tried Salling Media Sync again, same problem.

For those quasi-technical users like me, this is a headache. Droid is not living up to its "iDont" superiority assertions...

Other than this media syncing headache, the Droid is an awesome device and I already love it. But I am afraid trying to sync my iTunes to the Droid will dork it up big-time. Guess I will just pass on my Droid being a media device as well, and carry my iPod around along with my Droid.

I will try a few things (carefully, so as not to further mess up the Droid), and if I have any success, will surely post here.

I tried manually dragging and dropping iTunes M4A files from my local PC to the Droid device. As long as you maintain the folder structure in your iTunes library on the Droid SD card, the Droid music app will recognize and organize by artist and album. Not sure about manual drag-and-drop of playlists. Will try that next.

Just curious, is anyone using Linux (Ubuntu), and if so, are there any nice programs that do media syncing with the Droid?

I am the type of person that prefers drag + drop right onto the device, but I wouldn't mind a nice music app that does syncing. I am a big Ubuntu user, but I have never done media/music stuff with it (I use my Ubuntu laptop mostly for research and note taking during class).

A good CD ripper (like Easy CD-DA Extractor) will allow you to embed the album art when you rip. If it's stored in the mp3, you are good to go!

On the freezing.... I had some exchanges with the author of Salling Media Sync and he is saying that he worked with some Mac users having the issue and they found that swapping out the SD card fixed the issue. I thought to myself that it couldn't be true since I can sync fine with doubleTwist but everytime I use Salling Media Sync it errors out, but after reading this thread, I'm beginning to think he could be right.

Does anyone have other media laying around they can try?
