Well, this is not good. Titanium is crashing and rebooting when restoring my apps on Pete's new rom. sigh. I'm not entirely sure what to do about this one.

Okay, if I have already applied the official update, then want to install Peter's rooted version, what would be the best way to do that?

Did update, Factory Restored to clear all the junk I had on it. *228 keeps saying activation successful, but my phone won't connect to their network and just keeps trying to do the activation process again and again.

I fixed my problem. Rebooted into recovery, did a factory reset again, reinstalled titanium, hopped on my wireless network, let titanium reinstall busybox again, and now it's restoring the world for me. NO idea what happened the first time, but, I'm about to have a clean install of 2.2 with root and all my apps and data restored. I really can't complain about that.

well that seems to be a bit of an unknown I am trying to hash out in the All Things Rooted forum.

no one seems to know, for a fact just yet, if 2.2 is rootable. So, you could be a test case and go buy that $1 Easy Root app just released today, see if you can root your 2.2. IF you can, since we know it works on those phones with 2.1 already, you will then have a rooted 2.2 phone and can then get Peter's ROM. But since you have already done the manual update from 2.1 to 2.2, your locked into 2.2 so it would be a curious bit of info to find out if that East Root app can root a 2.2 phone just like it did all the 2.1's earlier today.

EDIT: disregard this.. as was pointed out to me elsewhere, I didn't even notice that when I bought it, the app notes that it is for 2.1 only... my bad. so it may not be usable on a 2.2 to do the quick root method since you already went to 2.2.

Well, I tried applying the rooted version on top of the OTA version, and it hit an error and wouldn't install it. I'm loathe to do a factory reset, as it took a fair while to get things set up just like I like them.

I made a tiny (60KB) file you can append to the official google ota update file that gives you root access.

Someone made one like that for 2.1 and I was hoping to find another, but got sick of waiting.

You just type "copy /b signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip+FRG01B-root.zip update.zip" at a dos prompt and root is added to the official update.

You can grab the file at Android - whiterabbit.org

Let me know if it works for you.

So, it seems that if we already have the official 2.2 release, we will not be able to use pete's rooted 2.2. Would a factory reset clear all updates to the OS and allow me or others to force pete's rooted 2.2 update?

How are you applying it, you still have a recovery installed?

Remember, with the official 2.2 you lose root, so you may not be able to install another ROM / updatewith first rooting...

Wow, and you apply this the same way as the regular (forced) update?

Same question myself. Would following the same instructions to downgrade from 2.1 to be able to root work?

Yes. I added the old 2.0.1->2.1 with root hack to my site too. If you want to flash the 2.0.1 sbf, this will give a clear path back to 2.2/froyo with root. The 2.0.1->2.1 update also uses the file from google with a small file appended to it. Nice and clean.

You would have to go back to 2.0.1, then root and flash to 2.1, then root and flash to 2.2. I can't guarantee there won't be better ways in the future (I know there will), but this should work right now for those with unrooted 2.2.

Interesting. OMJ is actually writing a full guide to do this for 2.2 users...

Interestingly enough, the file cannot be opened in Windows nor Linux - is it perchance corrupt on your site?

Yes, it is corrupt, until you use the command "copy /b signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip+FRG01B-root.zip update.zip" at a dos prompt.

To see what is happening, unzip signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip once, then run that command. Then unzip update.zip somewhere else. Both folders will be almost exactly the same, but the one from your new update.zip will have system/bin/su and system/app/Superuser.apk, for example.

FRG01B-root.zip is nothing until you add it on to the end of signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip at a dos prompt. Think of it as a patch. Here is the app I used to make FRG01B-root.zip: http://zenthought.org/content/project/volez

Ahh, I missed the whole binary switch at the end of the copy statement - I should have seen that, then it would have made sense.

Default Found a ZIP file - Is it Genuine?

I came across this a few minutes ago.

How-to: Get Android 2.2 Froyo on the Verizon Motorola Droid

It includes a link to a zip file and instructions for installing. Not sure what to think.

How can you tell if it is genuine?

Unroot/Unbrick using .sbf post from -ikithme- - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

That is how you downgrade to 2.0.1 in order to flash back to rooted froyo. I guarantee there will be an easier way to do this at some point, but if you don't want to wait, there you go.

Personally I use the wired and wireless tethering apps for root. However, if you're not on root, go to settings, wireless and network, tethering.

Yea, many people have reported that before. I don't know of a fix for it. That's one of the reasons I'm running root...so I can use wired and wireless tethering without issue.

Get files from Android - whiterabbit.org

then

"copy /b signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip+ESE81-root.zip update.zip"

flash update.zip

"copy /b signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip+FRG01B-root.zip update.zip"

now flash this update.zip

Default re: USB tethering

I hooked up my phone and hit USB Tether. Windows 7 finds it right away, but when I tried to load a page I got dumped to a verizon wireless page telling me about the data plans for tethering or a dedicated device.

Is that a generic landing page? Or is there really a charge? I wouldn't be surprised if there was a charge, but I thought I saw someone mentioning it was included and "free". Is this just a generic landing like you get at Starbucks or Panera bread when you first load up?

Am very happy...went through the process and things are running smoothly.

Some points:

* PDANet works fine after the 2.2 update. In fact, I'm using it to post this message.

* There is a LONG first reboot, where you see the red eye for a good 5-10 minutes. Let it go. It will come back! It'll also be slow as it resyncs everything, but will eventually speed up. Though, even when it was syncing, it seemed faster than 2.1 was while it was syncing.

First, thanks for the info on the board. Updated to 2.2 and working great. Initial reboot took under 4 minutes.

I downloaded Flash here: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Installed it and seems to be working fine also.

Thanks again!

Certain protected apps such as Skype and Chicktionary are not show is it me or is there something missing?

Default Is this really the final release?

I downloaded and installed FRG01B from the link provided, it installed quickly, and booted up. However, I can't get flash to show up on my market. I have tried a dozen links online all leading back to get.adobe.com/flashplayer and I can see that it tries to route me to the market but I'm getting an error message. "! Not found... The requested item could not be found." Considering the success of apparently every other soul who has tried to do this with the rooted copies, I was wondering if anyone here was having similar trouble with this copy. Also, could anyone shed some light on my issue? Thanks

Look three messages above you

Froyo

Apparently, it is no longer in the market, and one presumes Adobe will bring it back up somewhere in the next week or so. They probably didn't expect many of us to "jump the gun" this way.

For those of you asking about lagging problems, I experienced some initially, but after a couple reboots and running ATK its superfast.
