LOL!

Yeah, I've been downloading some of my favorite SWF file games... and seeing how they work on 2.2

We should start a new thread on this with download locations for our favs.

Default Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Installed without a hitch on the first attempt. Also helped 2 others in my office update flawlessly.

This is my first attempt at anything like this and I can't tell you how comforting all the success stories are.

I am really hoping Verizon does get some fixes in place no offense and I am glad I have it but the more I use it the more little quirky things I see. I can completely understand why they would hold off and fix some of them. From custom ringtones not working to the market not showing any installed apps to other applications never closing. And a lot of other things that just make this build look almost alpha like it was part of a test pilot for the features. Things like these and also a few more. I will wait until my fiancÚ's phone gets updated and before she does the update steal her update.zip file and see what that does if it is a different build number.

Awesome. This was my first attempt at anything like this, too, and I can't tell you how disappointing it was to have a broken (temporarily, hopefully) phone

Just bad luck I guess...

I seriously want to ask some lawyer friends of mine about a civil suit against Verizon re: fees for usb tethering. It's double dipping. All VZ brings to the table for this feature is a data connection, one that we are ALREADY required to pay for UNLIMITED DATA. I can understand limiting HOTSPOT because in that case you potentially have non-subscribers mooching off of VZs bandwidth. However, in USB tethering there is a one-to-one relationship between the subscriber's device and a computer. Therefore, what is the justification for this arbitrary fee? Am I missing something here?

The thing I think you are missing is that you pay for device data which is generally smaller. Using your phone as a modem is different its not what the device was intended for and they have stand alone devices for that such as the mifi hotspot or other dedicated cards. I agree you should be able to tether and there are plenty of ways to do it without paying the extra but for all intents and purposes you are using the phone as a modem and can chew up the data you would normally use in a matter of minutes instead of days this way. My average data usage is under 500MB on my phone, my consumption on my netbook with WWAN is well over 3GB a month when i use it heavily.

That's what I'm saying. When I first heard about Froyo and tethering I thought "Sweet! Now I can work in the car during a road trip as long as there's a tower to hit", but $20 a month for the little I'd use that? And to limit it at 2GB? That's derp.

Sad panda.

I suppose but I stream music a lot on my Droid (sidebar: WHEN will XiiaLive come up with a widget worth installing?!) so I'm typically close to 3G per month. What's it to Verizon? They offered Unlimited, I pay for unlimited, damn it I want unlimited so I would hope they have a better justification than data usage. Furthermore, my apologies if I'm one of the chumps making VZ rethink this Unlimited Data Plan stuff. heh heh

First time doing anything like this. So far froyo is great. No problems really. Thank you trident for this update.

I have read all posts and can't find any that address my question. Ran linpack and it says I am running 800 mhz/vole/shole when I save my results. Is this normal or does that mean I got the wrong rom? My understanding was the droid only runs a 550 stock. I just want to make sure I got the legit ota forced to my phone instead of something else. Thanks.

Earlier in the thread JohnlGalt mentioned in a discussion about battery life he believes that 2.2 runs at 800 and therefore may experience decreased battery life FWIW.

Could this be why I can't get the update to install? I have tried downloading from about half the sites listed for the non computer method. They download fine, I get through the rest of the process just fine. But when the phone restarts, I get no Froyo. It's back to 2.1-update1. The kernel doesn't change, the build doesn't change. Very frustrating.

So is vole/shole a codename for the device? I googled it and that what it appeared to be but I wanted to double check. I plan on trying to update soonish but I still would prefer to not void my warranty. Thanks for all your help.

You sure that when you power the phone on, you are holding "x" on the qwerty slide-out keyboard? You should get a DOS looking menu, then you choose the install update.zip and click the gold D-Pad button. Please describe your process step-by-step if it doesn't work this next time, and I'll see what steps you may be missing.

Good luck!

I downloaded the update a few hours ago. Everything seems fine.

Wonder what the issue is?

That they didn't get to put their "behold droid owners!!" marketing touch to it.

Default Thank you!

I have been impatiently waiting for Froyo OTA. I have been skeptical about installing stuff like this, but I held my breath, and did it. Works like a charm. I'm so happy. This will keep me going until the OTA hits and patches anything buggy with this build. But, so far so good! Thanks, Trident!

Is it just me or has anyone else been having 2.1 OTA flashbacks? I am having massive "LSD style" 2.1 OTA flashbacks and it's really annoying me.

I have..to an extent. Since I have just had the Droid for about 3 weeks, I was not fully used to it, so the new update did not mess me up as bad.

Used the PC method, appears all went well, had to pull the battery to get 3G back, WiFi worked fine on first re-boot.

I strongly suggest everyone do this using a computer and not try to do this from your droid.

As far as I've read, Astro won't allow you to move the file to your root SD card directory. I'd find the "from your phone" tutorial on page one of this thread and follow it very closely.

I followed the instructions listed at the beginning of this thread. Downloaded, did all the required steps in Astro, powered phone off, powered on holding "x" on physical keyboard, exclamation point appeared, volume up/camera button, DOS menu appears, scroll with D pad button to update zip, pressed gold button in D pad, script starts scrolling, finishes, back to DOS menu, highlight "reboot", press gold button in D pad, phone reboots, old system reappears.

First gripe with 2.2 (Verizon's greed re: tethering notwithstanding), when in Car Dock the screen dims after a minute (or configured time) just like it would normally. That's not so cool when you use your Droid as a radio in the car particularly during the day. Also once you're in Car Dock mode you're restricted to the applications they present, hitting Home key takes you back to the Car Home app instead of your Home screen(s). The Car Home Settings should be called Car Home SettING because there's only one actual setting, whether to display the annoying "Don't use your device while driving" warning.

I was able to do this easily with EStrongs File Explorer also Free and they have a good task manager with handy widget as well. Highly recommend

Does EStrongs have an app manager? Astro has an app manager that can backup all of your apps (non-private) and I use that more than anything else.

Interesting. Was the "update.zip" file you used approx. 45.2 MB? I know the first time I did it, I had the same result and found that the download I had was only 10.2, and that was why. I'd suggest redownloading using a new source.

Did you use phone or computer method?

They do! They have quite a full-featured suite of apps. They also have a Security app but I run Lookout so I don't want to muddy the water there.

I downloaded the Estrongs...same thing. Maybe I have a bad download. It will not let me paste. I am to copy it from the Download folder on my SD card and paste it to the Root Directory correct? I don't have my USB with me to do the computer upload.

Man, I dunno. The 'mounted' USB way was so simple. I'd wait til you've got your USB cable and go that route.

The file was 45.2 MB. I guess I can try one of the other download sites, although I'm not too optimistic. I used the phone method. I'm going to try the computer method when I get home later. Something's got to work.

How can I uninstall this? It's making my phone run slow and I can't download Adobe Flash Player 10.1 which is the main reason I downloaded this.

Trident, simply awesome. Couldn't wait anymore, not ready to root yet, perfect.
Probably the most painless update of any device ever, and so far operating flawlessly!

I rooted and ran Froyo leak months back and then reverted to rooted 2.1 and the recently rolled back to 2.0* and then flashed stock 2.1. Stock 2.1 ran fine with no probs.

Any opinion as to whether this might be contributing to my problem?
FYI, I fixed my wifi issues by switching my router out of mixed mode .11b, g,n to mixed mode .11g, n. That fixed the problem of losing wifi (but still being connected) at home. I tried a wifi at my gym that used to work but it drops connection. If anyone else is experiencing the wifi being more finicky in 2.2, that's something to try.

Does using this update void any agreement with Verizon? I've read that some updates will void the warrenty. Thanks for any idea you can share.

I think I may have found the problem. It doesn't look like the file is getting to the root directory. I checked Astro after I supposedly loaded the zip file into the root directory. Went to "Home" screen which was labeled "(file folder icon)/sdcard", pressed the "up" button. That took me to a screen labeled "(file folder icon)/" which had a folder named "root". I opened that folder and it took me to a screen labeled "(file folder icon)/root", and on that screen was a message saying "(Directory is empty)". I tried 3 different downloads, same story. Time to try the computer method.

Root of the directory does not mean create a folder called root, but to place the .zip file in the base of SD card outside of all folders. i.e the root of C:\

In computer file systems, the root directory is the first or top-most directory in a hierarchy. It can be likened to the root of a tree — the starting point where all branches originate.

I think this is were people are getting confused.

Make sure you have "Unknown Sources" (allow installation of non-market applications) checked and install from your downloads on your SD.
