Hi everyone! I'm new to this thread because I have just one question that I think you guys can handle
First of all, after getting this phone the day it came out, I have LOVED every minute of it! There is just one thing I can't figure out...
I was texting a friend and he sent me a funny picture message, but I cannot figure out how to save that picture to my phone. I've tried clicking on the message, then tap + hold the picture (which only zooms in), and I've tried clicking on the menu button while looking at the picture, which only brings up the options to "Set As", "Details", "Slideshow", and "Settings (for the phone's camera)". I can't find any option to save the picture onto my phone, as my previous Venus would have done.
Any help would be appreciated, and thank you!

Go to the message with the picture.
Long press the image, “Forward” will be an option in the menu that shows up, select it.
Forward it to your gmail address
You can then view that email and save it.
I know its a long process, but there must be a technical reason for Android not allowing saving of MMS images. Thoughts anyone?

Actually, I think I got it figured out. All you need to do is to tap+hold on the picture you want to save, a message option menu will pop up and then you can click on copy attached to sd card.
It's not very hard at all; Go to the app store and download RingDroid. It's a free app and will allow you to crop any song that is on your phone and turn it into an alarm, notification, or ring tone.
What I was referring to was that I assigned a tone to my notifications (for text messages) but when I tried to go back through settings>sounds and display> change notification tone, it wouldn't change my tone when receiving text messages. What you need to do is go through the messaging screen> hit the button that gives more options (second from the left, next to the back button) hit settings there, and then change the ring tone from that screen.
I don't want to have to re-crop mp3's that are already edited/cropped. I have perused the options that let you change the messaging notification sounds since my last post. I'll look into RingDroid, but I'm not overwhelmed about having to get another app (even if free) just to import an MP3 as a ringtone. That functionality should be default. I've been able to do that shit since my v3 RAZR like 5 years ago... 5 years and millions of dollars later I had hopes that phones would have passed this point in functionality.
I see what you mean now; I thought that you wanted others, I'm not sure. If you do get RingDroid, you will not have to crop it, simply select the entire song, and hit save.
I'm sure that there is some way to do it without that, but I did not have any ringtones on my phone, and wanted to use my music.

If using the stock sms app just hold your finger on the thumbnail of the pic and you will have a bunch of options, one is save to sd card. Has to be thumbnail in the txt not when u open the full pic u cant do it there.
Possible dumb question but, can you use Google Voice on the Droid for texting so text messages don't count against my Verizon plan?
To my knowledge yes. The google voice app uses data not text. But the apps can only check for new messages every 5 minutes. So unless you turn the feature on in google voice to send texts to email it might take up to 5 minutes ot get a text.

Cool but how does it work? Can I have GVoice the default texting app like I can with phone calls so I go into messaging and it will send my message via Google Voice or do I skip the messaging app and do this some other way?

You have to use the google voice app. But if you dont have texts fowarded to your phone number when you google voice apps gets it and you click on the notification it will open google voice.
im just curious, did vzw do a set up on the phone, like setting up email, like they do on bbs? or do they not no how?
Yes we do. WE SHOULD walk you thru a brief tutorial. but i cannot guarntee everyone does it. Always nice to know before the cust leaves that there comfortable with their device. EVERYONE is diff tho. you know who the "geeks" are and arent.

Cool, thanks! I don't send that many texts but I have some friends who send them to me so I'm forced to text back so I don't want to waste money on a text plan if I can help it.
well im prob gonna get the droid, if not the droid another android vzw has to offer, but i actually dont have a gmail account, i have an earthlink account and i most definately wont no how to set that up.
Go and sign up at gmail.com. Forward your earthlink account to your new gmail account. transfer your contacts to gmail. Then transfer your calender to google calendar and your set.
I have two questions, that if answered I believe they would be useful to all to be stickied (that is why I am on this thread and not starting a new one)
1 Can you voice search (navigate) to a specific contact address? I saved a contact as Home, but calling out Navigate to Home does not work. I am trying to streamline the voice Nav process. I need to explore My Maps more. I want to be able to call out Navigate to... and it go to a location saved in my phone, not me reciting the address.
2 What is the best way to explore files saved on your phone? I downloaded the guide (mentioned earlier) to the phone but closed it... now I can't find it.

Not true.
GV FORWARDS txt messeges once every 5 min i beleive if you do not have the google voice app installed on the phone.
However if you have google voice app installed, then its almost immediate.
I know because i have used it and its almost instant when a friend standing next to me sends one and me getting it.
So if you do not have the app, and just using the google servers to send it..there may be this 5 min every talks about...but if u have the app, from my own experience its instant.
I've downloaded Rings Extended - but the problem I still haven't been able to solve is to save an MP3 that comes in as a text message attachment, so it can be used as a ringtone. I've tried the menu button - which merely backs out of the song - and holding the "play" button. Unlike an image, there is no thumbnail to click/hold on.

The 5 minutes option is inside the google voice app on the droid.
In my expirence and i have been using google voice for texts all weekend is that they are not pushed.
If yours are pushed your lucky and i wish mine were.
Hey I read this somewhere but not sure where, I don't have a whole lot of time (gotta go back on shift to work) but how do you save pictures from texts? I can long press them and save them to the card but I don't know where to find them after? Wish you could just save the pictures to your camera like every other phone. hmm. I want to put one as a background and know how to save them anyways.
OK, dumb question, but when I play music it is not playing out of the speaker phone speaker. How do I get the music to play out of the speaker phone speaker?
Anyone? This is driving me insane. The sound is only coming out of the small ear speaker and not the main speaker. I can't for the life of me get the music to play out of the louder speaker.
Nevermind, I powered down and powered back up and now the speaker is working. Weird.
I had this same problem yesterday and it really freaked me out. I tried uninstalling about 6 audio apps that I thought were maybe conflicting with the audio, but it wasn't until I restarted the phone that it was fixed. I've had to do it once more since then. I really hope that it doesn't become an ongoing problem. *crosses fingers*
NEW QUESTION:
my droid's screen will sometimes go black and not be able to return or turn back on while im in a call. Even when the person hangs up, I have to do a battery pull.
Anyone else have this issue?

Yes and I left a 3 min voicemail to my buddy of me bitching about how to turn of my phone, this problem needs to be addressed quickly... anyone have solutions??

I had the same question about using voice search to navigate to a contact address and couldn't figure it out yet. Seems like it should be simple enough?

Were you unable to hit the power button and enter whatever password you have?
I hate how mine locks me out, but I bet you can adjust the settings somehow. It would be great if you could adjust it in locale to turn off the lock during a phone call.

I haven't tried a contact, I'll try that in a few mins.
I did use "navigate to state fairgrounds" and worked!!
Okay, I've looked through all posts in this thread and most other threads and here are some of my problems that have yet to be addressed:
Apps open without being told to open - when I use my taskkiller app (Advanced Task Killer), it shows me apps that I haven't opened since turning on the phone today. Apps include Photoshop Mobile and Voice Recorder. Even after I kill the apps, they automatically reopen after a few minutes. What controls how these apps automatically start? I've checked each of the respective programs and there are no autostart settings. How can I stop apps from starting on their own?
Notification Sounds - Is there a way for me to have a different sound effect for different types of notifications? For example, I'd like to have one sound for the USB mounting/connecting and a different sound for incoming text messages. I've tried various ringtone apps but none that I've seen go beyond the basic all-notifications sound.
Homescreen Rotation - Has anybody figured out how to get the homescreen to rotate to landscape without having the keyboard open? Somebody mentioned earlier in this thread and there's been no response. I want to be able to just rotate the screen from the homepage and work horizontally, but i have to open the keyboard to make that happen. As soon as i close the keyboard, the screen reverts back to vertical.
Google Maps Directions - i feel like this is a stupid question, but here we go anyway. I can't get the maps app to give me directions to a location that is pulled up on the map. For example, I'll voice search for Bank of America. It'll show me all of the ones in the area, let's say A, B, C, etc. I want directions to A. How do I do it? If i tap it and then go to settings and "get directions," the destination box is empty and I have to do the entire search process again. How can I get directions to a destination that I've already chosen?

The google maps directions works for me. Whenever I search for something in maps and pick one of the locations and "get directions" it shows up in the destinations field and I just have to click go.
While checking this, I did find it a little odd that if I hold down the search soft key while in maps and do a voice search, it brings up the regular google search results. But, if I'm in maps, and tap the soft key, then tap the microphone, it will do a maps voice search and show the results on the map.

For me when i turn the droid without opening the keyboard the screen rotates for me.
Under settings > sound & display settings
theres is an option for orientation make sure thats checked.
Also found this on another page.

They are different searches. The home screen one, just say, "MAPS US BANK", and it'll spit you right into google maps and highlight your matches.

oh wait, I just have to tap the pincusion, then the menu comes up, not only navigation, but it gives me an option to call! WOW this phone is exceeding my expectations already
The only thing i don't like about this phone is the notifications. I wish it were set up like my blackberry (i cant believe i am saying something on a blackberry is better). I want to set up different profiles with a different option for each event. I cant believe this was left out. I dont really know how to set it up for class and church and work.
But don't get me wrong...this is an awesome phone!

Does everyone have the 54 page user guide PDF file for the Droid? Judging from some of the posts, many haven't found this yet. There was a story posted here for it.

I think that if there's a widget on a screen, then the underlying app needs to be running. I don't have Photoshop, but I do have Voice Recorder and that app is running. If I kill it, it starts again.
Yeah, nobody got the full Droid manual with their phone, which is kind of annoying. But most things that were covered by it are either common sense or can be solved in 5 seconds with a Google search.
Actually I've found that most things can be solved right here. This has to be the place with some of the brightest, most inquisitive and (in most cases) kind and giving people on the net. I said this on another thread; most of my questions have been answered before I can even ask them. I do a google search before I ask a question and the number one choice in the list is a thread right here on this forum.

I have the same issue with the phone. I want to hear a notification for my texts but I don't need my phone to beep everytime I get an email. Hopefully there is a way to fix this.
It's a little crazy I know, but it is a mystery that obsesses me. I copied a couple of photos off my flickr account to use as wallpaper and set them. Then, having decided that I actually liked the original wallpapers that came with the phone, I went to change back and they were gone! All I can see are the photos that I downloaded in the "gallery."
It is not life-threatening, but it is driving me crazy! I didn't delete them (that I know of) but where did they go?
I have had my phone for an entire 24 hours now and I LOVE it. I am also in love with this forum, it has answered so many questions and given so many great tips!
I am having a hard time inserting video as an attachment in email. When I click on settings, add attachment, the only items that come up are the photos in my gallery and not any of my videos.
The only way I have been able to email videos is if I go directly into my gallery from my home page. I can see the videos and click to share one and send via my default email account. I do not understand how to attach the video from an open email that I am composing.
