Most phones w/ mp3 players will only stream to stereo BT headsets.
Not sure why you can't dial with it, I don't have my droid yet,... Maybe someone else can help...
As a user of Google Voice I can see how a standard voice over bluetooth system would not be sufficient to allow a user to manipulate the features of Google Voice verbally.
I am sure that when "Voice Control" does appear...it will allow a level of control of the Google Voice application that will change the way we use our phones.

So Android 2.0 doesn't support all volume through bluetooth headset? I have a Nokia BH-900 and All I get is calls through headset. Music, rings notifications only go through the phone.
My Moto Q9m allowed music through my bluetooth so I know it works.
Music, I'm not too concerned about because Id rather use my circumaural sonys, but if I have this douchbag accessory on my ear at least mute the notifications on the phone and play through to my ear.
Got non A2DP Bluetooth headset to play Music / podcasts
I went searching for a way to play my podcasts over a non A2DP bluetooth headset. I couldn't find anything, but I did figure out a way to make it work. I'm using a Sprint HTC Hero phone.
1. I went to the phone and dialed '**' (2 stars) which creates a 'p' for pause. Then press call. This enables the headset without actually placing a call.
2. After this I started doggcatcher (or other audio / video player) and it played through the headset. Everything went through the headset after this point.
3. In order to stop playback to my headset I just called my voicemail and hung up. At that point, audio was routed back to the speaker.
I don't know if this will work on other phones, but it did on mine.

EDIT: I have found that it only works when my ringer volume is off or on vibrate. Also, the media volume needs to be turned up separately -- Either from the settings control or prior to performing the 'p' call. The volume rocker only controls the Bluetooth call volume after the bluetooth headset is active.

I noticed that if you're on a call and you try to play audio that it plays through the headset. So, I tried to make a call without actually doing anything. After several other combinations that didn't work, I tried the '**' and it made a 'p'. I figured this meant pause, and thought... Hey, that would be a good number to call, and I was amazed when it actually worked. After that, I just played around with it to figure out how to flip it on and off.
I only figured this out about a half an hour before I posted the message above. So, I don't know if there are any other side effects yet.

You'll want to have it paired with your headset of course. On my Hero, it shows like it's trying to call, but then ends. At that point is when you can play your audio/video program.
I have no personal knowledge whether this works on the droid or any other device. I've only tried it on my Sprint Hero.
Also, My Hero is running Android version 1.5. It may be a version specific feature.

i just bought the Motorola Cliq, having the same issue, audio on the BT headset only works for calls, all other phone audio goes though the phone. thought this was a Motorola issue but now see that it is more likely an android issue.
listening to Pandora, through wired headphones, i got a call and switched to my BT headset to take the call, when the call was over i could hear pandora on the BT for a few seconds then it reverted back to the wired headphones. this is the same withouth the wired headphones (except it reverts back to the phone speaker, of course).
i am using a plantronics voyager 520. it is a single ear piece (not stereo), however i was able to listen to MP3 and all phone audio on my old Nokia 6301 without issues. I paired the same headset with my wife's myTouch G3 and have same issues as the Cliq.
i can't believe that with all 'ease of use' functionality that the Cliq and Android boast, that they left out voice activated dialing via BT and have such limited support for BT in general. this is a proven technology, it is not like they are inventing anything new. to leave these basic features out or over look them is disappointing.
has anyone gotten this to work at all with Android with other headsets?
This is normal behavior for phones. Until someone comes out with a hack your headset must support a2dp in order to listen to audio.
I researched this a lot and did find a solution and it's cheap to. Newegg.com - Jabra BT8010 Mono Bluetooth Headset - Bluetooth Cell Phone Accessories I tried this out and it works great so I ordered 5 more. I was using a jawbone prime and the volume is very loud in comparison to the prime. One of the best things about this headset is I haven't been able to kill it yet. It plays my podcasts for 8 hrs straight with no issues.
The phone will have a brain fart every couple of days and I have to reboot it and then it's good to go.
I have a Bluetooth motorcycle helmet and synced my Droid to it.

Has anyone else gotten this to work? I'm curious if it will continue to work when my phone upgrades to Android 2.0. I can report that it still works after the maintenance update on the Sprint Hero, however, this is still only ver 1.5.
Can't believe you stumbled onto this. It works perfectly for playing music on a nonstereo Bluetooth headset. I don't know how to access the p on other android phones or if it even works at all but typing ** in the dial line changes it to a p. Don't forget to turn it silent, and your media up. Then when you call it, it says unknown disconnects and then you can close and it works for all audio.

anyone know how to get the **/pause workaround functioning on motorola droid?
Interested in getting this to work for the Moto Droid as well. Supposedly, a comma inserts a pause but when I created a contact with just a comma for the number, it makes a connection to the earpiece and then ends the "call" right away.
So not successful yet. Would love to know if a Moto Droid owner has this workaround working.
Sorry to necropost, but the BT Super Mono (or similar) app routes phone audio over mono bluetooth earpieces. (ie, SCO so no a2dp is needed). $6 for the Pro /Froyo version.
This is the same functionality as BTaudio on WM smartphones.
Might have to do a few searches; I find different variations of the name.

Hey tried the "**" or "p" call to make the audio work on my nexus one but it was a no go. I know that my MP3 player will play music while on a call but will play over the speaker if my bluetooth isnt active...anyone else know how to make a fake call or how to make a "p" call on 2.2?
The price of the BT Super Mono variants has dropped to $2.99 because there are competitors now. At some point, it's probably worth the $3 to not have to dork with the dialpad workaround stuff.
No relation to the author, just a user who runs the audio redirect app several hours each day.
I have the Jawbone Icon and I can get whatever audio the phone is sending to the BT headset with no problem. for example, I have a police scanner app on my droid and I can hear all the police chatter right in my ear same with music too. You can even download apps to the Jawbone headset too which is pretty cool!

Doesn't work for me. A close look at the help section says that without a2dp there will be no music. I have also tried the Super Mono app and some others and none of them will reroute sound from the mono plug to bluetooth.
I really miss that feature since I had it working in Windows Mobile 5. A2DP adds at least $20 to the cost of a regular headset.

I have no doubt that BT Super Mono works for many models, but I have a Droid OG.
I tried out a Jabra Drive with my HTC Droid Inc2 right before Christmas. Got everything going to the BT spkr EXCEPT ringtones, which were still being reproduced by the crappy, little spkr on the phone. Now, this might be acceptable for most; but I'm greedy: I want it all. Does anyone know of a unit that will, right out of the box, snarf everything the phone can possibly sound, without all these messy workarounds that are significant YMMV for various phones?
