Default bypass activation on Droid

I've got a blacklisted Droid and need to bypass the activation at the beginning. I can't figure how to use the phone without activating first, which can't be done.

Does anyone know a way to bypass this activation and go straight into using the phone?

so once you bypass the activation, can you use it on wifi without a data plan?
What things can you access if you bypass the activation?

Thanks!

I'm assuming hes talking about a ESN that is banned by VZW. This happens for a couple reasons. Either the original owner got the phone and didnt pay their bill or the phone is stolen.

Should be able to set up your emails, except Yahoo unless you paid for the Yahoo Plus. You can access the browser. Anything particular you are looking to access?

Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering if it can essentially be used as an internet tablet without activating it. I had an out of contract iphone that I just used on wifi at work, and I was hoping to do the same with the DROID if I move on to the another phone later.

So, I understand that if I bypass activation:

I can not:
-Make or receive calls
-Send or receive texts
-Be able to access 3G
-Use Google navigation

But I can:
-Use wifi to browse internet
-Send and receive email using Wifi
-Access Android marketplace with Wifi
-Sync my google calendar and contact with Wifi

Am I correct?

Thanks!

Indeed you are. You can do all those things with wifi. You can also use apps that require an internet connection.

Is it possible then to bypass activation if a phone is already activated? Thus, if I decide I no longer want to use Verizon, or pay a monthly phone charge, can I 'de-activate' the phone, and use it in the manner @plastic describes?

In order to "bypass activation" you need to wipe the phone. Then you'll be prompted with the "activation" screen that needs to be bypassed. If you deactivate your phone for whatever reason without wiping your device there'll be no need to do the bypass because your phone will still function. Hope that helps.

Default bypass activation

Question: If I bypass activation and then decide I want to activate with Verizon later, is that an issue? Basically, I am waiting for another plan to end and then switch over. Until that time, it'd be nice to use other features without the call plan.

Appreciate the help!

no you will not experience an issue because you only need to dial *228 to activate your droid

That was a fast response! Thanks, Joneee!

Now all I have to do is figure out how to transfer my music over from my PC for my flight tomorrow.

whitty

[edit] Almost forgot. Will the activation delete or reboot the phone so that I lose whatever I might download?

You can use usb to transfer your music or try DoubleTwist to transfer from your iTunes

And no, activation will not change your phone in any way except open the network to your phone. All your apps, music, settings will remain intact.

Would VOIP calling also be available? Or even Skype when Verizon announces it? I just bought a second droid off Craigslist for my gf, which was also blacklisted, you get what you pay for I guess. But if/when Skype becomes available, she would be able to call me via VOIP if she was on WiFi correct?

Will I still be able to active my DROID after I have bypassed the activation screen on the phone. I mean when I reboot it again, will the activation still work?

Google Voice isn't VOIP so it won't work. And from my understanding the Skype implementation that VZW will be introducing uses the voice network until your call hits the backhaul network via the cell tower, then it becomes a VOIP call over the pipes. So no that wouldn't work.

@ Jfor - yes, if you bypass it, everytime you reboot the phone it asks you to activate it.

Darkcircle169- I would guess it would not work on that phone since its made by a totally different manufacturer (HTC). If you havent figured out how to do it by now I would check a web form specifically for that model- this specific form is for the motorola droid. I am sure there is a way to do it on the HTC however (where there is a will there is a way!)

I know this is an old topic, but a friend of mine is considering buying a droid on ebay to use as an "ipod touch" replacement, he likes my Droid X better than his ipod touch, but doesn't want to get a phone with a data plan.

My question is, can he use the google voice app for SMS/texting via wifi?

I was told I cannot get just a data plan, but I didn't bully them about it, so who knows.

I too run an off-contract droid as basically a wifi tablet. I can send texts via g.voice, and voip calls with skype, or or similar programs.

From Verizon's site:

$9.99/mo. for 25MB
Good for email and light web browsing
Required
for Multimedia Phones

Heavy Usage
$29.99/mo. for 5GB
Ideal for watching online videos and frequent web browsing.
Required
for Smartphones

Pay As You Go
$1.99 per MB
No monthly fee or signup required.
Not Available

Try pulling the battery for several seconds, replacing it, powering on, then tapping the android the instant it shows on screen.
If that doesn't work, tap the top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left corners, just below the notification bar and just above the bottom gray bar.
