This is really why open source rocks - can you imagine the hysteria that'd be going on at Apple if users did this sort of thing to get an iPhone update early?

Loading it now...the time from pressing vol+ and camera to the list of options appearing took a while, or I wasn't pressing it right. I had to do it a number of times.
installing the update now.
Rebooting now...(scary music in background)
Motorola logo appears...
Oh NO!!
It worked.
2.01 verified.
Is it just me or is the Droid eye different after the update?
First boot took a lot longer than a normal boot...must be doing something as a part of the first start after update? I don't remember anyone else reporting that...it sat on the Droid eye for quite a while.
I'm not seeing any impressive performance improvement in scrolling the home screen (using the stock home screen or Home++). If I didn't know the phone was updated I wouldn't notice any difference.
The updated look of the Power widget is quite nice.
Glad I didn't wait up for this...would have been disappointed.

Just hoping:
A. There are no issues with this update (apps compatibilty and such)
B: In case there is, we can download 2.0 as a zip to be reapplied in case this update is a problem.
I highly doubt there will be any issues. Just thinking.
Thanks OP for the instructions and DL link!

I can get it into recovery mode... but pressing the vol+ and camera button doesn't do anything for me. No menu.
Ninja edit: Nevermind... you don't press them at the same time. You press them in sequence. Got it now.

Thanks...your instructions were what tipped me over the bar to trying this - simple and clear.
I also wonder about the Volume+/Camera combo...maybe it is one then the other, and that's why it took me so long to make it work?

Ok, I paraphrased my error the first time. Here's the entire output.

When I did the update, I had to press and hold volume up first, then push camera. Worked easier than syncronized pressing. All good on the homefront. Thanks for the info all.

Just did it and I can confirm that it works flawlessly. I always wondered what the "apply sdcard:update.zip" option was for in the recovery menu...
Anyway, the lock screen is prettier now (looks more "Droid"-ish, I guess? Can't describe it, though I wish they utilized all that blank space a little better). Also, the home screen feels a little less laggy, though still laggy. They need to fix that.
Just a few questions: 1) Will the factory reset option through the menu get us back to 2.0 or are we on 2.0.1 for good (unless we reset through the recovery menu?)?
2) What happens when Google releases the (silent?) 2.0.1 update?

The camera is MUCH faster for me...about 3s between shots, sometimes less. Before it was more like 5-6s at least. So that is much better.
No idea about quality yet, but the speed is a welcome improvement.

The reset only removes data, so you should stay at 2.01.
The 2.01 invite probably will skip our phones, if there is a check for current version...there must be something like that, or they'd keep offering the update over and over to everyone...I can't believe they'd monitor every single EMEID of all the phones in a database and track update status.
Be interesting to see, though, I wondered the same thing. If you do get offered the update you can just accept it - the patches will either be re-done, or more likely they will be skipped and nothing will happen.

I'm seeing this too! OMG great update! Used to take 6-10 seconds, but now... it's like 4 seconds on a 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi..... you know the drill

I know that this must sound stupid, but when you say download, download to the phone or the PC. I can do both is the reason I am asking. If I download to the phone, how do I re-name the app, and how do I load the app into that renamed folder?

No idea, what is your location? Did you try the updated instructions?
How did you load it on the droid? Maybe it's a location thing? Everyone I've talked to has been successful so far!

You probably included the file extension (.zip) in the name; don't. Rename it to "update" and it should work fine. If ".zip" is in the name, then it won't verify.
