Where is the root of the sd card?
O.K I got it. I just renamed the zip file update (without the .zip) and placed onto my sd card.
Worked like a charm.
Thanks Syntrix!

You probably included the file extension (.zip) in the name; don't. Rename it to "update" and it should work fine. If ".zip" is in the name, then it won't verify.

Hmmm, i renamed to update.zip, copied to the root dir of the sd card and did the reboot magic.
Are you saying you only named it update, and had windows EXTENSIONS turned off?
Ultimately, the file needs to be named update.zip, there are windows options for this. Windows problem, probably nothing more. Check your options/tools to rename extensions.
I had the same error. I had downloaded it on my Mac. It unzipped it automatically so it was a folder with all the files in it. I did it on my PC and it stayed as a zip and was able to rename and copy to the phone and it worked. Are you trying this on a Mac?

Correct...it is already a zip file so just rename it UPDATE.
I don't notice a difference in the home screen scrolling but I do notice that the camera has dropped the wait time between pictures from about 8 seconds to 5. Still a long time but at least it's an improvement.

Yours and thrilla's location arent' set here. please clarify.
I don't believe it's a location thing. Maine, not that it matters. But since it's failing out at verifying current system, I would think that there's something wrong with my current system.

Turn file extensions off, and then name it "update". If file extensions is turned on, then it should warn you when you delete the actual extension, as opposed to part of the name. Easiest way is to turn off FE and then rename it.

That shouldn't matter, it has to do with file extensions, read my post above.

Good stuff about windows, basically it's gotta have a true name of update.zip on the SD, regardless of how windows sees it
Got my chance to play around with it, and it is blazin'! Among other things. Since I had gotten down to 20 or so % BEFORE I updated, I have to wait till tomorrow to give the "improved battery life" a run for it's money. I'm almost glad I didn't get an iPhone (almost)
When I downloaded the file (OSX) I got a folder named "signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20" which then contains subfolders, it is unzipped I guess. Can I just rename this file "update"?

The file needs to be "update.zip" on the SD of the droid. I'm sure there's an OSX (or other os) setting to view that, but I have no idea.
It's downloaded as a *.zip, so so in theory you just need to rename the extra parts if ".zip" does not show.
I give up. I'll just wait for the OTA update to most likely fail the same way then bring the phone back. I'm pretty convinced there is something wrong with my existing OS since that's the part that fails the check.
don't know if this got mentioned before or not but... you are able to download the file directly to your droid, then with Astro file manager, rename the file to update.zip (astro makes extenstions real simple when you 'rename' under edit) .. then under edit, you can move it to the root directory of the SD card (not the root directory of the phone) reboot and proceed with steps. worked awesome, didn't even need a PC to upgrade. thank you orig poster!!

Havn't installed yet but if you are using Safari in OSX you need to go to safari/preferences/general tab and uncheck "open safe files after downloading" . Then when you download the file it will remane a .zip file. Gonna try the
install in a little bit.

Some mod merged topics and failed.
I had the full howto, but it's not there anymore, some mod deleted it. Then when you click on my topic, it's a different topic.
It used to be the full step by step (howto). Hmmm, this site can DIAFJB if they can't restore, since I was compiling and updating the first post on the fly.
The first post is not mine anymore and it does NOT have complete info, the mods need to answer about this.

Reason: added bold for mod fail
It is much easier to use Astro File manager as described rather than try and mess with the download in OSX.
Download from droid.
Open astro file manager
navigate to sdcard/downloads
long hold the file just downloaded>edit>rename name update.zip
long hold update.zip>edit>move
navigate to folder sdcard
press menu on the droid>edit>paste
now you have the file in the right location named correctly.
proceed with the normal instructions.
