so i forced updated my phone and rooted it and noticed it held 3g better, today i got on my verizon and switched my number and went threw activation, now i get dropped down to 1x like i did before update. my question is can i run the update again even though im on 2.0.1. in hopes that it will redo the bug fix in signal.

so i did it,i forced the update and rooted the phone and its holding 3g better now.

I just manually updated and everything seems great.
I did notice one thing though....when rebooting the phone it used to say "Droid" in a robotic voice either when it was spelling out D-R-O-I-D or that red eye thing was on the screen and after the update it doesn't anymore.
Not that I care, just something that I noticed. I don't know of anyone else with the phone so I'm unsure if anyone else had this happen as well. But like I said, not a big deal.

Oh also, since I manually updated to 2.1, will I still receive the OTA update?

Worked like a charm and it was super easy. I had trouble today for the first time with the screen staying dark and this seemed to fix it. On a side note, I think the dark screen might be from using dolphin browser. I downloaded it a while back. And really used it today.... who knows!? Thanks for posting all this!

You aren't alone, mine has been doing that for two days and I haven't done the update to 2.0. it must be a Verizon system problem.

"Preferred Roaming List" - As I understand it, it will allow your phone to roam onto your carrier's partner towers.

oh you mean in my settings under wireless/networks/mobile networks/system select/ or do you mean calling 228 and selecting option 2 that will update my roaming capability.

All with option 2, that always seems to help after I update any of my phones.

What happens in January when they push the OTA update for 2.1, and you've got a slightly different filesystem layout as the people who waited? Will the 2.1 update apply cleanly, or completely fail?

At that point, you'll be forever stuck in a phase of having to update manually, which may not always be an option.

Unless, Verizon/Motorola/Google provide clean, *full*, firmwares that you can use to completely restore phones.
Same situation would exist if Verizon changes something mid-stream in the 2.0.1 roll out. My guess is the newer version will get a different version number like 2.0.2 and you could just wait for that OTA. Remember, some folks already have version 2.0.1 via OTA.

I checked my file structure before doing the manual update. There was a directory "cache" but it had nothing in it. When I did the manual update to 2.0.1 it gave the "can't open cache/recovery/command" error, but the update completed just fine.

I just checked and there are still no folders or files in the cache directory after the update.

As noted above, the update installed fine on my Droid and everything appears to be working great. I too have noticed the phone seems a bit snappier. There is one glitch that was fixed that I have not seen any comments about here. Before the update, whenever I was on the OEM AC charger and was displaying a screen that scrolled, the screen would jitter and rock and roll all over the place and be nearly impossible to control. After the update, the screen is rock solid while on the AC charger now. Kewl!

Actually now that you mention it, my Monoprice charger doesn't seem to affect my touchscreen performance... I'll have to investigate further this evening.

I noticed that same problem when I had plugged my phone in to my PC to do development, it wouldn't scroll right. However, it didn't do it every time, just sometimes. I tracked it down to not plug it in when it was on the lock screen (if I unlocked it first it would seem to be OK)

go to verizon... you should have 2.0.1 by now. you shouldn't have to do it manually, it was released to public a few weeks ago.

That error is saying the file doesn't exist, so either you misspelled something or didn't transfer the file.

Default installation fix

ok guys seriously i tried for about 4-6 hours. i went into the verizon store to see if they could do something about it. they couldn't. i thought i'd help out those who have tried. If you are waiting around for the update and still haven't gotten it by 12/22/09 forget it you are not gonna get it. verizon forgot about your sorry ass and decided your business was not important to them. so here's what you gotta do. do it yourself. now you've decided that doing the forced manual update is the way to go. but when you tried renaming the file to update.zip and you were careful to make sure you showed the file extensions then you still got the error message and it still didnt work you thought there was no way you were going to get it. WRONG. what you gotta do is, save all your contacts onto your sd card or by saving it on google. then you need to wipe your entire phone and let it reboot, then you reactivate your phone with verizon after you have cleared your cache and wiped it. then go to settings/about phone/check for updates. WAAALAAA. it should be there. you may have to reboot it several times and wipe it several times before you are given the update. i guess what happens is verizon "forgets" that you need it and doesn't send it to you. but eventually ifi you reboot enough times it realizes and sends it to you. it took me about 6 hrs to figure this out so i hope this helps you. i now have the 2.01 update.
of course if you can do the forced update then do it, its easier. this way is just for those who can't force the update.

I'm wondering how you determined that Verizon didn't care about you because you didn't receive the update. Literally millions of customers on their list...
Things happen, man. The world isn't perfect. It doesn't mean they don't care... it just means something happened. I feel your frustration, but do you really need to be so dramatic when you post about it?

Well, I think I have your solution!

I recently had a hardware issue with my phone and the only solutions was to get a new one in the mail. I asked them about what version/state would the phone be in and they told me that I will probably get a version with the original 2.0 on it and that once I receive my phone, activate it and start using it i should CALL the support line. They said they will be able to push the update to me over the air if the phone did not come updated.

try that out?

if not.... i have just search many forum threads about the problem and most of the time the solution is "Try renaming it to just update instead of update.zip"

this is because "if you have your file extensions hidden and you rename it to "update.zip" the actuall filename will be "update.zip.zip"."

Just got my new phone in. It came in as 2.0, but about 4 hours after I registered it, it asked me if I wanted to update to 2.0.1

So, if it hasent asked you yet, go to the store.

Mine says same thing, except something about

apply_patch_check ("/system/app/alarmclock.apk...........................

Getting very frustrating...

Tried it as no extensions "update" and it said it could not find file...

IT HAS TO BE update.zip or I think .tar, but NOT update, or update.zip.zip

Default A few questions can anyone answer?

1.) Can anyone manual update wireless, without the use of mount/usb?

2.) Has verizon (company) released 2.0.1 yet?

3.) If so, can you receieve the 2.0.1 is you manual updated the last upgrade?

For users who are having an issue with signature verification and/or your installation simply WON'T work, make sure the update you have downloaded is the correct size (~10mb).

I downloaded the update from another source and it was only 24kb! Hopefully this helps

Why are you forcing and update now? Everyone had it pushed so all you need to do is wait like 10 minutes after you get your phone.
