Verizon took a HUGE step and went with Android "as is", none of days of old Verizon meddling. I wonder if they did ever get the iPhone how all of that would work? The 'new' Verizon, being all open pairing up with the 'old' Apple, being all closed?? Would Apple have to make some concessions in order to be on the Verizon network or would Verizon be happy to not care about it and make a killing?
Good point. I have often wondered this myself, and I am under the impression that Verizon at this point is willing to go along with whatever will make the device manufacturer money, and themselves in the process. If that means leaving the device closed and calculated then that's the route they'll take. I think if and only if devices come along that could potentially seriously cripple their network then they may look into curbing features.
Enter the 4G iphone. If this thing does get the green light when LTE is more mature then VZ and Apple have a winner with everything from video chat to steaming larger files and content. Add to that OTA ebook downloads and VZ blows wide open a huge new market segment in one fell swoop with the help of Apple.
Now if we are talking about the iphone in its current state and OS UI I'd say without a doubt that I'd never even consider another Apple device. Add multi tasking and a touch of more openness for the customer and I may consider. As for the Mac Tablet that will come out in a month or whenever, I think I will avoid this bandwagon like the plague this time around.
Depends on what the Verizon version offers. I wouldn't pay to get a 3GS, even if it could be had on VZW.
One reason I got the Droid over one of the soon to be released Android phones was so that I would be in the annual upgrade window about when the iPhone comes to VZW. Depending on what it offers, I may switch.
I did this also... just because it is a possibility that the iphone will come this year. Personally, i don't think it will until 2011, which is fine... i will def enjoy my droid for a long time. I truly do love my droid, however, I see myself eventually switching to an iphone when it comes to verizon.
Would be a mistake to pick up an iPhone if this baby makes it into the US. It will be here soon. Besides....the iPhone is outdated technology. Android is the future for mobile OS.
dont get me wrong i think apple makes great products i love my macbook pro, and like my ipod touch until i sold it when i bought my Droid. Id say id stay with android devices because it does anger me how apple tries to "tie down" there users and gets all but hurt when people jailbreak and what not. I like where google is going with Android and i think iPhone OS better make some big changes ASAP if the wanna keep up. because they can only rely on there AppStore for so long, because it is a matter of time before the Android Market is at its level.
I feel that the only thing apple has on good here is iTunes. It would be nice to have a nice computer sync that just works, but that being said, Android users dont exactly NEED a computer to make there phone work which is a plus, but being as i have a computer i would love a iTunes like app made by google, with a link to android market and what not.
I will give the media player to Apple. It is superb with lots of glitz and very intuitive. Sadly, I was very disappointed with the stock Droid player. I really thought Google could do better than that!! MixZing is a fairly functional substitution but I'm hoping to see it taken to the next level.
The browser however, I have to disagree with. Because of the Droid's screen and res, the browser is FAR more useful than the iPhone's. Fingering around the screen all over because it doesn't fit width-wise on an iPhone is rediculous. And pinch to zoom? I'm still trying to figure out why this the savior of the browsing world? I'll take a double tap any day which is faster and with the Droid, one double tap makes even the smallest print readable. I really don't see where pinch to zoom is better than a night in bed with (you pick your favorite model).
All one needs to see are the two screens side by side. That alone, in itself, one feature, is enough to make the iPhone look like a child's toy.
I think everyone doesn't understand what iPhone we are talking about... The droid one upped the current iPhone I think, and this is what everyone is referring to. However, the iPhone that comes to verizon in either 2010 or 2011 will be bigger and better than the 3gs. If Apple doesn't make some changes to one up Android, they are stupid.... but Apple is not stupid. only once I see what this new iPhone has to offer, is when I'll make my decision.

First of all, nobody will be ditching their Droid because they are on contract. It would take one hell of an iPhone to make anyone switch for that reason alone.
Second, when my contract is indeed up, I will look at whatever LTE based phones are out there. I haven't read anywhere that the 4G will be LTE based and if it is to be released soon, there is no reason for it to be LTE based. So in another 1.5 years or so if Apple hasn't updated to LTE, oh well.
Third, by the time the Droid is off contract, the whole game will have changed from today and what we expect tomorrow. There is an explosion of Android based devices that are hitting the market in 2010 which the more people buy, the more devs look to those sales. I wouldn't even want to speculate where Android will be at the end of 2011! And HTC is making some wicked cool devices themselves. Don't think for a minute they are going to lay down to any Apple device.
Bottom line, every phone manufacturer that was shell shocked when the iPhone first hit has now got the memo and know what to do. And they're bringing it. Ask me this topic's question when my contract is up

+1
Agreed. I don't think the other manufacturers are going to sit idle. Even if the iPhone comes out guns blazing, they'll have some firepower of their own ready and waiting. One things for sure, there'll be a lot more choices for everyone.

So you just sell the Droid and buy the iPhone for retail to offset the price.

I think you underestimate the will of people when a new device hits. And generally, anything with an "i" to start the name generates ridiculous fanboy craze.
There are definitely people out there that will drop a phone in a heartbeat for the latest hot phone, contract or not.

Very true. There are always those trying to "keep up with the Jones" by grabbing the latest and the greatest (phone) out there. Still, I would say this is by far a majority of the market, so even with those eager to jump ship, it still will not make or break any phone out there today or tomorrow.
Man, how would anyone switch to an iPhone? Most people are locked in on 2 year contracts so we can't switch to an iPhone in 2010 without shelling out some $$$$. (like MicroNix mentioned)
Even if I could switch to an iPhone, I would not. Android is much more customizable which is the major factor in my book. Although the iPhone screen is more responsive, I still prefer having options rather than being confined to rigid iPhone OS.

Reason: Saw MicroNix's post after I posted...

I should have added that on contract and having dropped $199 for their Droid (cut me some slack, it was early morning here!) If you sell the Droid now, you sell at a loss. Might be ok for some, but I'm a little too old school and get my $$$ worth out of what I plunk my hard earned cash down for. I know there's the yuppies with daddy's cash but I hardly think that's the majority of Droid owners. Those type of people are already on an iPhone with AT&T because they had to have what Biff had next door. Whether or not they can make calls or not doesn't matter, they have an iPhone.
I couldn't imagine going to an iPhone. Love the Droid too much. It's like layers of an onion ... keep peeling stuff away ... the deeper you go the more neat things you discover. Eventually, the Android OS will get to the point where it will run rings around the iPhone. The iPhone's novelty wears off ... the Droid allows you to discover more and more each time you play with it. Bottom line is that the Droid's possibilities are endless ... the only limitation is that of the users and the software developers.

I agree. If you had asked me a month ago I would have said iPhone all the way but now I've gotten use to my Droid and learned somethings I can do with the Droid that will never be allowed on the iPhone. It would be tough to give up now.
You know at first I was very disappointed that the iPhone was AT&T exclusive. AT&T has terrible coverage in my area and was not an option for me. Then I realized, if it were not for that, we would likely not have the Droid. I'm happier with the Droid personally. It's open-sourceness is a huge plus for me.
I'm REALLY insulted. THIS lady is an expert marksman with and M-16, a 9mm and a shotgun. Not to mention my unarmed combat skills.... maybe you should try hanging out with REAL "ladies."
I have never had an interest in iPhone or had any desire to have one. I was with cingular/at&t for 10 years before it came out and when it finally did come out it was a huge deal but I was never really impressed and I'm still not till this day. Other devices (Droid, HD2, Eris, N1, Palm Pre) draw my attention but the iPhone just looks boring to me. It's just a page full of icons. Sure, the user interface is as slick as can be and they have a lot of great apps but you can get so many free apps on android...
The thing I like about the iPhone is all the attachments you can get for it to do about anything with. That's about it. I was never real impressed with the phone itself, coworker had one and he was always having problems with it. In this area it's coverage is pretty spotty, so it wasn't really an option.
Now to say if it came to Verizon.. I probably still wouldn't touch it. Apple's business practices are probably the main reason I never will. I relate Jobs to being a cult leader, expecting people to blindly follow whatever he puts out there like sheep. The iPad debut pretty much solidified that fact.. saying a device is "magical" and that is a primary reason you should buy it is just ******ed. They have brainwashed the iphone/ipod fanbois to the point I would never be associated with the brand if I can help it.
I'll stick to my droid as it does everything I need it to. Sure I'll drool over the new android phones that come out within the next 2 years, but I'll live. The reality is, the latest and greatest really doesn't do much different than what you already have. In the end, they all make calls, send texts, and browse the web. The rest is just a convenience.
I would switch, as long as I could stay with Verizon. I love the Droid, but if iPhone gets multitasking in the new OS, and then Verizon gets the iPhone - I will switch. (Granted, I haven't seen 2.1 yet) I love the way the iPhone handles media, in my opinion, it's far superior to the Droid. However, I can't give up multitasking. We will see, I am growing more and more attached to this thing as the days go on.
