Just uninstalled the 2.1 launcher - used too much memory... That said, I really like the functionality of it, but I'll wait till 2.1 is released.

I do believe it has updated since the original posting. It is over at alldroid. They have also posted what appears to be a stock 2.0.1 with five screens as well. I have not tried this out since I am not having any issues with the 2.1 launcher.

Cool

The only thing I miss with the new launcher with its nice 5 screens is the widget that worked like a small drawer for my favorite shortcuts to reside in. Kept them all tidy and out of my way but easily accessible without clutter and no ugly folder on my desktop. Just a tap and the slider widget opened for me to choose my shortcut. No accidental launching when I picked up my phone. It is part of Open Home and AHome. Pretty slick and about the only thing I like about that home replacement, sad to say.

That's what I'm using right now, the tweaked 2.01 launcher w/five screens. Completely solid, doesn't drag the phone down or cause any issues. Really happy with it. I may try the 2.1 again after the dev who is working on it releases an update, mainly to get the navigation dots at the bottom of the home screen - I really liked those. Don't like the new app drawer very much, however...

The 2.1 launcher still hasn't been updated, still 1.1a release.

I don't think there is a difference. I've seen references to launcher being open. I don't see how Google would let Cyanogen distribute the launcher (or home or whatever) if it was closed. All they seemed to care about were the Google services apps like maps, gmail, and market. You can't just say everything Google developed is closed because they developed the whole OS. There are apps, like phone and messaging (and I think browser), that are obviously open.

I'm just saying... the argument makes no sense. We need a definitive source for what is and isn't open.

If someone could PM me the link for the .apk download for the 2.1 ROM, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There are several 2.1 ROMs available...you should go to the Developer>Droid forum on Alldroid.com and read up and pick the one you think sounds the best...

I didn't say that everything Google developed was closed. I said all the apps that Google developed are closed....unless Google posts the app's code online. They have posted the Chromium code that is the source for it's Chrome browser online, therefore, it is open-source. Android's OS code is online, therefore, it is open-source.

If the native app's code is not distributed online by Google, then it's not open-source.

Here are the open-sourced native apps:

Alarm Clock
Browser
Calculator
Camera
Contacts
Email
Messaging
Launcher
Music
Phone
VoiceDialer

These can be found here under "platform/packages/apps/"

Tried the 2.1 launcher and that thing was laggy and problematic. went back to original homescreen and it is so much nicer. Cannot wait for the real 2.1!

Yeah, root is required. You have to overwrite two files in /system/apps - Launcher.apk and Launcher.odex

So I downloaded both the 2.1 Gallery and Launcher2 apk. And after playing with it, I promptly went back to the stock 2.0.1. I actually like the 2.0.1 Gallery compared to the new "3D-enabled" Gallery. Who cares if it tilts with the accelerometer? It provides no additional functionality. Sorting by date is nice, but it really isn't that much better overall.

The Launcher... I kind of like the new "App Tray" but how much time do I actually spend in the app tray? Again... overall, not that much better. I think I will still use Home++ as a replacement for 2.1's home. In fact, if Home++ included the 3D app tray, why even use the 2.1 stocker? That's just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to the 2.1 update, but I'm a bit disappointed at some of these native apps haven't really improved.

It messed the links up as in people were clicking a link to see post 1 talking about installing the MT browser but when they clicked the link, it was talking about the music player instead. The content they wanted at 60 some posts down.

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I am rooted, so I backed up the stock launcher and replaced it with the 5 homescreen launcher (found on alldroid). The good news (for me at least) is that it doesn't seem to use any additional memory, which was the problem I had with the 2.1 launcher which seemed to really slow down my droid...

swiping to move between pictures isn't in the 2.0.1 Gallery. Therefore, it is added functionality.

no, the 2.1 Gallery can be installed on 2.0.1 WITHOUT rooting.

The only thing I was talking about that requires rooting (I think) is the 2.0.1 launcher with 5 home screens. The 2.1 Gallery (which I am using - love it) and the 2.1 launcher (tried it for several days - used too much memory) do NOT require root to install.

Again, I "think" that the 2.0.1 launcher with the 5 home screens requires root. That said, it works really well and does not seem to consume any additional memory.

rooting is EASY - the only real danger is what can be done after you root. I personally have not had any issues at all since I rooted, and the changes I have made are minimal... If you want to go that route, there are several threads that describe the process step by step, and there are some forum members out there that have been extremely generous with information. I happen to know my way around the linux shell, so that certainly makes it easier, but rooting is not hard.

Read it again bro. Tilting the photos using the accelerometer provides no obvious functionality. It's just there to show-off the 3D elements of 2.1. Swiping is a part of 2.1 Gallery, but again, overall, it is NOT a better gallery presentation. I prefer and like how HTC implemented their gallery for Sense UI. Was hoping that 2.1 would do something like that instead of some goofy, tilting garbage.

that's what I said. If you look at what I quoted, the guy stated that you had to root your phone for the new Gallery. I was saying, no, you don't.

read what? I read your statement where you stated that the 2.1 Gallery brings no additional functionality over the 2.0.1 Gallery. It does. The swiping to move between pictures is functionality that is in the 2.1 Gallery and not in the 2.0.1 Gallery. Therefore, it's additional and useful functionality.

If the "tilting" and the "pretty UI" stuff is all you noticed, then you didn't use the 2.1 Gallery very much.

And what I have highlighted is your opinion. I love the 2.1 Gallery. Much easier to view pictures. Easier to navigate pictures.

Launcher+ beta allows you to use the stock launcher, but simply add 5 screens. its in the market.

NO ROOT REQUIRED

you can get multiple home screens with the default 2.01, Launcher+ beta, free in the market

you can install 2.1 Gallery from an apk, no root, using Astro (also in the market)

You can install the 2.1 launcher from an apk, no root, using astro.

Anyone need links or files let me know. But so far, I havn't rooted my phone and have been able to try all of the functions listed.

that said,

I uninstalled the 2.1 launcher, just prefer GDE.
I installed, then uninstalled the 2.1 gallery. I liked it, but my images would not detail appropriately. Meaning, I would see the thumbs, everything worked great, loved it. But when I tapped on a thumb, the pic would display, but would be pixelated and never sharpen.
Launcher+ is sweet, works fine, no lag. but because I prefer the look and feel of GDE (which comes with multiple screens) I uninstalled it.

hope this helps. if not, I am terribly, TERRIBLY sorry.

launcher + replaces your home screen, not really separate, in a way it is, but you can make it your MAIN home screen!

i KNOWWWW I can make it my main home screen...Like i said...I exhausted all options. I know you can make it the default home screen and blah blah blah but the point is that no matter what there is always some lag when using a home replacement. Launcher+ was the best but i would PREFER to use the native home launcher with 5 screens. I appreciate you guys trying to help though .

I would think that auto syncing with Picasa (if you use it) would be a great functionality to have. Install gallery, Install Picasa 3.6, sync your computer pics with Picasa online and watch them show up in the gallery app.

Sorry if this was covered. I just read this entire thread from page one and am confused on one thing. I see the talk about getting the 5 screens with 2.0.1 . I am interested in it but i am not rooted. Is it an .apk and if so can someone pm a link to it. I dont really care about the gallery. Im really just interested in the five screens cause my 3 are full. Any help i would appreciate it. Thanks

i see some people say you can without root and then some you have to root.

If all you want are the screens then you can hit up the market for an app called Launcher+. If you want what's in this thread then you have to be rooted.

Since were on the subject of 2.1 who else here has checked out the SS 2.1 at alldroid. I am currently running this rom. I have ran it since yesterday and only had one FC while reinstalling my apps from the market. Anyone else had any experience with this rom. Simply Stunning

I have the GDE homescreen app installed on my motorola droid and the Hero theme which i like cause it has the phone button, contacts button, and menu button on the bottom of the screen. I also love all the features that GDE has but im still running 2.0.1 and the only thing missing is the 2.1 launcher. is there any way to install .apk 2.1 launcher while using GDE and still have the hero theme but with the 2.1 launcher instead of the old menu screen?
