Default Proper/Best way to back up before a factory reset?

Hey all, just wondering if there is a good or proper way to back up my apps before doing a factory reset?

I'm not too worried about contacts as that should be saved ala google just have a lot of apps (all free) And hoping i dont have to go back and re-dl them all.

Make sure you have the backupmysettings box checked before doing the factory reset and then when you sign back into your google account it will reinstall them all for you. It takes a little bit like 10 minutes or so for them all to download so be patient and refrain from visiting the market until you get the notification in the staus bar that xxapplications have been reinstalled.

Yeah. Whatever ever apps you have installed before you factory reset will be reinstalled, paid and free. Paid apps are tied to your Google account so in the market if if you hit menu and then downloads it will always have a list of all your paid apps rather they are installed or not.

Cool, thanks for the tip GMB.

I think I'm all set to do a FR. Got SD backed up and that checkbox was already checked.

If you download something in the market before your apps get redownloaded it messes everything up right? Because when I did my factory reset because my phone locked up I went to the market and it had a list of all my apps in downloads, but when I tried to manually download one of them the entire list disappeared.

Thats correct (imo).I had the same type of thing happen to me, so it best to wait until all the apps are reinstalled before visiting the market. In fact i dont do anything on my phone until the apps are re-downloaded, be patient, then you can start setting it back up. I have about 30 apps installed and it takes about 10 minutes before I get the notifications in the status bar that is completed. The more apps tou have the longer it is going to take.

Good to know. I hated having to redownload all the apps manually.

Instead of backing up the SD card, can you just remove it from the phone and THEN do the factory reset using only the internal storage? or does factory resetting require the SD card in place?

I have never removed my SD when factory resetting. In fact most of the time I HAVE to have the card present for a Nadroid restore. It is always a good Idea to keep the SD card backed up anyways with apps like Slacker formatting them at will...

I dont see any harm in just removing the card if you want though...

LOL , Slacker is a radio app that was formatting peoples sd cards randomly resulting in the loss of everything. I was able to recover about 50 or so MP3's but lost everything else of real importance cause lets face it I could care less about the MP3's I wanted all my pics and documents back. That was my point as to the importance of backing up the SDcard regularly. I dont know of an apps for backing up the SD card. I just mount the card and drag and drop to my laptop a few times a week.

When that happened to me I had to manually go track down the free apps one at a time in the market. Your paid apps should still show under the Market\Menu\Downloads.

Here's the other thing I am wondering about. Are apps forced to use the SD card to store data, or do they get some room for themselves on the main memory? I have a few apps that store some very small amounts of data but I wouldn't want to lose that either.

Not a big deal, and I suspect they are forced to use the SD card (otherwise you'd run out of memory) but curious nonetheless.

well i took the plunge and did the hard reset.....and i have to say im happy so far. much more responsive and faster than before. i have have the 2.1 launcher app running very smoothly. only problem is......MY BEAUTIFUL HOME IS GONE!!! I paid an expensive $1.45 for this app as well. anyone know how i can restore it or get my money back?!?!?!

Also, i tried to let the apps download automatically, however it was stuck on the first one for like 10 min and wouldnt budge! so i canceled the download and started dling the essential ones from the list. I guess i wont be getting any automatic installs this way but I kinda prefer it.

Beautiful Widgets has been kind of an odd battle. The dev received cease and desist orders from HTC so the app was pulled from the market. Shortly after that app was reworked with a new look and reposted in the market and very shortly after that it was pulled again because HTC hadn't approved the new version. Word is that the developers , level up studio, washed their hands of it and says its not worth the trouble. It is no longer available in the market. If you have the APK backed up you could restore it. I am guessing you dont or you wouldnt be asking. Also I suppose you could email the dev about a refund but its not even worth the time it takes to write the email for $1.45 imo...

Well.....$1.45 is $1.45....i could buy a nice $1 hotdog or a large hotdog for $1.50

also if anyone has a backed up APK of beautiful home please pleas please PM me? or I can PM you? I don't think this is piracy since I did pay for the app and also it is no longer available so how can you pirate something that no longer is for sale???

I understand what your saying but where is that hot dog going to be this time tomorow?? And how many days were you able to use Beautiful Widgets before today? Most likely the Widgets were the better investment.

Did you use the full Beautiful Home widget with the flip clock? If so peep Weather Widget.

on the topic of backups, how does it work with non-market apps? Also, given people's spotty history with OTA app restores, is there an app that backs everything up to the SD card exclusively? A backup for the backup cm if you will.

My apologies. You are correct you have to get the donate version $.99 for the flip clock. On the plus side it is not spaced too closely to the notification bar like BW was and its completely skinnable. Check out some of the skins , they are pretty cool

If you dont backup non market apps yourself they will be lost in a factory restore. There are 131 results for backup in the market. Sprite Backup is only $.99 and it was my prefered WindowsMobile backup app. Just purchased it to see how well it works with Android.

Is that the 'prettyweather' folder? Unfortunaetely I lost everything on my card when Slacker wiped it so I no longer have the BW folder. I'm sure somebody smart could figure it out. (That excludes me lol)

@Ryan Sprite is backing up now and there was an application options check box but not one for the applications themselves. I have read that MyBackUpPro has permissions with many developers. Here is the quote;

Thanks for the headsup, but sadly I didn't see my only non-market app (CadreBible) listed. I've emailed them, hoping they'll suggest something, be it a backup program that has permission to access it that they're specifically aware of, or something else altogether.

I've also just emailed the guys at Sprite and MyBackup, hoping one of them can address this particular app.

Your paid apps are tied to your google account so they are already protected.

FWIW I did a factory reset, and all my apps (free) downloaded great due to the good advice in this thread. I did lose some data for apps that didnt make use of the SD card though. I lost my SMSs as well but I had those backed up with "SMS Backup". Overall it was a very smooth process though.

I am currently involved in a thread on another forum concerning this very topic. Here's the strange thing. When I wipe to factory default and load some ROMs, I get ALL of my apps back automatically. But with some ROMs (like this new one of Pete's), the Market acts like I've never been there ... except for my paid apps. I use ASTRO to reinstall my apps, so it's really no big deal. But I wish I knew where the Market db is stored. I'll keep searching until I find it, or until someone smarter finds it.

The best thing to do is backup ALL of your apps to your sdcard, then back that up to your PC. I have several backups with different version of apps (i.e. the beautiful widgets files and app). The private apps are a little harder to backup ... unless you're rooted, of course.

Ya that's the catch. If you're "rooted".

Contacts should be tied to your GMail account. No problem there.
I recommend SMS Backup and Restore for your messages. It only does SMS though. Not MMS (messages with pics, files, or sounds, usually).
