Default To root or not to root...

Ok, I have the motorola Droid. I have been researching rooting it the last couple days, but have some questions first.

1. What are the major advantages of it? I have jailbroken my iTouch before, there were millions more things I could do. Is this the same with rooting?

2. People say rooting it makes it faster. How is this possible? What makes it do this?

3. When 2.1 comes out, will I be able to upgrade easily and get rid of my root?

Please list as much info as you can please. I would love to know.

Thanks

I hate to be one of these people, but there are plenty of threads like this about the pros and cons about rooting. Please search....

Just by typing in the word 'rooting' these results popped up immediately.

http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/38911-guide-root-rom-faq-tutorial.html

http://androidforums.com/how-tips/39176-rooting-my-droid.html

Please use the search feature, this forum is getting clunky with multiple threads containing the same content.

This has definitely been covered on so many threads, you literally wouldn't even have to get more than 10 posts away from this one on the list to find your answer.

That said...

Android 2.1 Update

And here is a search result that should cover the rest of your questions...

typing the answers would have been easier than acting like children!
I could have given the answer, and who cares how organized this forum is or how many duplicate posts there are!
All you are doing is scaring people away

Awww look at you three Jerkin' each others.... chain.

The problem with duplicate posts is it makes it harder to find relevant information, and clutters it with junk instead of being useful. And promoting such use just shows you haven't really been on many forums, and calling someone a child for wanting to be organized is actually more like an oxymoron.

The purpose of a forum is the easy sharing flow of information, and, with cluttered boards with virtually the same info in every other thread, thats not easy sharing of information. Now is it? So keep name-calling, and when you finally come out of your parents basement and join the rest of the world, who doesn't really want or have time to sift through countless duplicate threads, let me know.

Ironic that you make look down upon name-calling and then say "you finally come out of your parents basement and join the rest of the world." Who is being the child now?

The sailor moon comment was HILARIOUS and you are just an angry/pissy person. If people want to ask the same question 23541734095723094702 times, guess what? This is the internet and at least for me i'm in America. That means freedom to be ignorant or annoying or stupid. If you don't want to run into annoying or thick-headed people, step away from the keyboard and never come back.

I think you can rent sailor moon videos from blockbuster....

What I don't understand is how it's more efficient for someone to do the search themselves, cut and paste the links, and post them to their reply.

People get so pissed about repeat topics because it supposedly cuts down on efficiency of the forum.

It's MUCH more efficient to either ignore the post (don't even go into it!!), or to simply reply with an intelligent answer.

Sometimes it's much easier to read intelligent replies on a repeat thread than to wade through 15 pages of responses on the original thread before you get to the answer you want.

Or maybe instead of being so negative about my post or assume I am flaming or acting childish, you should realize one inevitable fact... the links I've posted contain SEVERAL answers to his questions, and I feel it would be beneficial for him to read through them for himself and see if there is something he likes rather than picking apart what I feel is worth while or a good answer. It might not even be close to what he wants.

If you posted a thread saying "whats the best app?" and giving nothing else, would you want people to give you one or two answers for what they think is the best, or would you rather have a link to a page with literally hundreds of apps to scan through and see what you can find yourself?

On second thought, don't answer that. I just realized by your response to my first post that you are the lazy type who would make the post, then flame people for not knowing what specific app you were looking for when you posted.

What the fudge, man? I never flame anyone. If you actually paid attention to my post, you will see that I did not even call you a name, let alone "lazy".

But hey, excellent example you're setting for the kids.

This is why I don't post too much because there is a lot of geeks behind these monitors that talk a lot of S&%T and think they know it all. We are obvious here to get answers and help each other out. THAT IS WHAT FORUMS ARE FOR....

Well, a big part of the reason these forums are 99.9% helpful and an excellent source of information and ideas is because of the long-term and heavy posters like Fadelight, Messenger13, GrandMasterB, etc.

They might get a bit irritated by the repeat posts, but they know what they're doing and they know what works. So forgive the little blips. Nobody's perfect.

Absolutely not, especially when you're correcting someone else's condescending remark.

Anyways, on topic. A basic rule of rooting is:

"If you are asking if you should root, you don't need to root"

Default To root, or not to root...

So I'm conflicted right now...I've been reading up on a bunch of posts about rooting, A lot of people are very glad they rooted their phones, While a few others really don't see the point in doing it...I for one am a bit hesitant in rooting my phone, for one, I have absolutely NO idea what I'm doing..I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem actually rooting the phone since there's so many instructions on how to do it..But what do I do with it once I've done it?..I've read a few things about "bugless beast" which I assume is a rom you can apply after you root? But I don't understand how to apply the rom or where to get it..Another thing is how or when do I apply the "backup" or "restore" files..Do I back it up before or after I root? And if need be, How do I revert back to the stock android system if I need to have my phone serviced?..In the end, I'm just not sure if the risk and reward is worth it..If I understood things a bit more it might help give me the confidence to go ahead and root my phone.....And yes, I've read other posts about rooting, But a lot of the lingo used I don't understand!... So yea, Thanks guys

Droid noob,

just a heads up, prepare for flaming

well i got no experience in it at all and I did it fine without bricking my phone. It's actually easy if u find the right instruction to follow. After rooting you can load roms that the dev made, currently i used Bugless Beast, it's working great for me so far. It just basically a tweaked android version.

to root your phone: simplest way, the way i used, is on Obtaining Root | Root Your Droid

next you need SPRecovery: once again simplest way is download from the market DroidRootHelper (free) or DroidRootPro (pay) i suggest the pay one cause it come with the latest version of SPRecovery.
Follow the instructions from the app! i think to summarize it after getting the Tools folder;

-Mount System read/write (grant permission. If it FC's, reopen and mount again)
-Install BusyBox
-Install Flash_Image
-Rename Recovery-from-Boot.P
-Flash 99.2b Recovery
-Reboot Recovery

You pretty much done after getting SPRecovery. Now you can loads roms and apps. Before you flash any ROMS, do a nandroid backup that come with the sprecovery in case the ROMS manage to brick your phone. I'm using Bugless Beast on http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=1553.

I found the link earlier to that site, And feel most comfortable with using those instructions to root my phone if I decide to do so...My one concern is backup and recovery...Do I apply the backup/recovery before or after I root?.. And how do I find and apply bugless beast rom?

dude root it and get the milestone browser. not for the multitouch, for the smoothness that we had before the 2.0.1 update. that alone was worth it for me.

Just read through the guides on rootyourdroid.info (linked above as "Obtaining Root | Root Your Droid"), and you'll have no problem. As long as you take precautionary steps to backup your Droid, you should never be able to mess things up beyond repair.

That is my main concern, Is do I apply the backup lessons before or after I root the phone!?... And also, is this the link for the "bugless beast" rom?
Index of /pete
And if so, How do I apply it/use it!?

you can't back anything up without SPRecovery. Once you have it, do a Nandroid backup before flashing a ROM. As in installing the Bugless Beast, his instructions is in the first post on the link i posted ^

It's like deja vu all over again.

If you are that conflicted and hesitant, there is nothing that says you have to root it. Your phone will work just fine and there is plenty of stuff you can do and customize without rooting it.

root your phone first then install SPRecovery (ROMS are not included) then you can flash any ROMS you want after you have SPRecovery (recommend to do a Nandroid backup BEFORE flashing any ROMS)

OK, my last question, is will I lose any of my information if I root my phone? Will I lose any of my contacts, saved text messages, music/albums or any already installed app's? or will everything still be there after I root my phone?

I followed the Guide listed on the above link. I went through all the steps unmounted my device. Reached the exclamation mark. Held down the up volume key and camera key. When I toggle down to the apply sdcard updatezip I get a prompt in yellow stating" E:cant open/cache/recovery/command". After I press the directional pad to appy the update I recieve a signature error.I do not want to keep going through the steps but will if you need more info.

You can't use custom update.zips without SPRecovery installed. They're not signed.

So first, you must root. Then install SPRecovery to allow unsigned update.zips.

Then you can flash BB.

Getting rooted is simple. After that, this is a great guide to getting SPRecovery installed:

Installation | Sholes

So, I've decided not to root my droid...Like I said in my previous post's I just don't know if it's worth the risk, And just too risky for someone such as myself who doesn't know what they are really doing.. Regardless of how "easy" it may be to do..And after seeing some videos on what the 2.1 update will bring I think I'm just gonna wait for that to come out..Whenever that will be!? ::shrugs::...I thank those who posted reply's on this subject, And thanks for not flaming me!..This board and droid forum community in general is very friendly..More so then other forums!
