Does anyome care about this anymore ? I still want this to come to my Droid , has this been addressed in 2.1 ? is there a App that I am missing out on that will allow me to use Voice commands with my Bluetooth ? can a rooted Droid do this ?
Nothing yet, I was just searching on info for this myself.

Yep- this is one of my (few) complaints about android so far. Google is busy making software to translate every language on the planet and lots of other cool features, which is nice, but they won't bother to add handsfree voice dialing to the software. It's been a feature on every dumbphone I've had for the last six years. With many states requiring handsfree phone use by law, you'd think this would be important.
I've been using the 'voice dial hf' app. Yeah, it's $4 but well worth it IMO. It uses the phone for voice recognition and then switches to BT for the call.
It is 1 tap to activate and is way more accurate than the stock voice dial (for me anyway).

I tried that app, but I still need voice commands through BT. When the phone is in a dock on my dash board, it is too far away for it to make accurate recognitions.

Yeah, I've seen that app and it looks cool, but I can save 4 bucks and set a direct dial shortcut on the homescreen. It's also one tap, but neither option is handsfree.
I want to be able to make a call from my headset without having to find and press the little wake button, slide to unlock, press an icon and
OH SHIT I JUST CRASHED MY MOTHER F'ing CAR TRYING TO MAKE A CALL!!
I agree 100% that we need true, real BT hands-free like every other phone has. This has just been a good solution for me while I wait and wait and wait...

This is my #1 most desired feature. It's an industry standard feature now, has been for years. For Google to blow this off is inexcusable really. Supposedly Moto is working on their own solution, since Google has been so apathetic, but they have no timeframe.

How do you know that I/ we didnt already go to google and star it . So that you know , I did star it the day after I got my Droid in Dec.
I don't know or care whether any specific person did or did not already do that. What I do know is that, given the number of people who have android phones, there is a surprisingly low number of stars on this issue, so I thought I would let people know that it's there.
What I also know is that a bunch of issues with far fewer stars that have been active a lot less time have had status changed to "Assigned", or at least "Reviewed," while this issue still is classified as "New" after more than a year. That says to me that Google doesn't seem to want to deal with this.
I wonder if it's an IP issue for them? Maybe they don't want to pay for the use of somebody's patent?
The Motorola DEVOUR is a nice Android-based smartphone, but what sets it apart from others is the MOTOBLUR user interface that provides greater integration and ease of use for your contacts, social networking, news, email, and messaging. In fact, the only thing we felt that is missing from the device is the larger and higher resolution screen that is on the Motorola DROID. Though, be that as it may, the DEVOUR offers a lot of nice features, including voice dialing over Bluetooth (which isn’t on the DROID or DROID ERIS) and a better designed QWERTY keyboard, though the 3MP camera is rather disappointing. Overall, we would recommend the Motorola DEVOUR for pretty much anyone who wants to easily stay connected via social networking. However, if you want the “high-end” Android, the Motorola DROID is still your best option, as it has the 3.7” WVGA display, 5MP autofocus camera, and will soon be updated to Android 2.1 OS.
So the Devour, which is running 1.6 and is also made by Motorola has BTVD but the Droid, running 2.0.1 doesnt? How is that possible?
at the time that I responded you were not even a thought since you were no part of this thread , so when I said "WE" you were not ............................................, well I will be nice and just say that you were not included in this conversation.
I'm not sure what the hubbub is. I hit the search mic icon, say "Call <Name of person>" A list of people in my contacts show up, I tap the one I want and away I go.

That's the issue. People want to hit their BT device and call from there, not have to even touch the phone.
I went and starred the issue. I don't have a BT device yet, but when I do, I want this feature.

That only works if you are close to the phone. If you have it docked on your dashboard it's too far away to accurately recognize your voice.
I was surfing the web for the voice dial app like most of you and I found this app that will do the voice dial. Here is the website Choice Dialer

So, still no initiation over BT.
Froyo is the solution.
I have been waiting patiently for this to be fixed. And waiting. And waiting...

to be fair.. the wait between updates for the Palm or iPhone make the time between updates for the Droid laughably short. On some Palms, we waited for years, and some times never got, needed updates. And the iPhone, slow to update as well.
We are on the verge of getting the 2nd major update within what, 6 months of each other (or less maybe) with the Droid.. it does not get any better than this really.
I have a rooted moto Droid with froyo, and my Bluetooth push to talk works great! It actually understands me better than any other phone I have used this feature on... Dang I love my phone!

I did say "patiently", didn't I? :-)
I love the phone. I love the OS. I really love what Launcher Pro does to the OS.
And my largest disappointment and most significant operational sacrifice that I made when I moved off my LG Voyager was losing the ability to touch my ear and say "Call Home" or "Call Email Administrator" or "Check time" without touching the bloody phone. Say like when I'm driving or something.
It bothered me then. It bothered me more than I admitted to myself when this basic disfunctionality wasn't fixed w/ 2.1. It bothers me today.
And it bothers me that for various reasons I can't root and install Froyo right now, so it bothers me that I need to wait some more.
So, when's the best guess for 2.2 OTA? or pre-OTA official download? I'll go check that thread...
Oh, and never had an iPhone or Treo, so this is the worst smartphone updating I've ever had.
On far and away the best smartphone I've ever had.
We have no word from any reliable source on when the OTA will show up. If you count my pure, inaccurate speculation as a reliable source, I believe 2.2 OTA will show up some time in mid to late July. Just out of curiosity, why can't you root?

2.2: Thanks for your informed speculation. I'll hold you to that date. :-)
root?: Was tempted to root, but then saw jailbroken iPhones get hit with a virus that was suspected of swiping passwords while the stock phones were fine.
And yes, Android is different than iPhone. Yes, there are security programs you can run on Android. But Android is reaching critical mass, and the bad guys have to have us in their sites.
I work in healthcare, and the potential security feces flurry if, unlikely as it is, I get hacked outweighs the clear benefits and, well, just fun that the root crowd is having.

I believe that the jailbroken iPhones were getting "hacked" because jailbreaking also installed an SSH server. Since most people never bothered to change the default password, people were able to compromise iPhones by using the default username and password. Rooting an Android phone doesn't install an SSH server; unless you install one of your own (and possibly even then) you'll be fine.

Just to add a little to the iPhone ssh thing. When we first started jailbreaking the iPhone the root password was alpine. This password could not be changed! It was hardcoded into many of the apps that made the phone work. Once you changed the password crap started breaking left and right. I believe it's okay to change the root password now.

Choice Dialer Plus 1.5.0 (a new Android 2.x-only version of Choice Dialer) now works fully with hands-free BT headsets, even in the free version if you have Android 2.2 or later. I consider the feature in beta in this first release, but it has worked nicely in my own testing.
