Ok so here is my question. I used the sholes updater from the market to root my phone, I do want 2.1, just to have it and check it out. Can I unroot, update, then root again using the app? or will 2.1 block the ability of this app to root again?

Okay, I just emailed the sholes team 2 hours ago and they replied just now, their response was that they will include the 2.1 update (obviously) and OTA's are currently BLOCKED. So if you are running the sholes mod you are perfectly fine when the OTA hits and don't have to worry about it unrooting you or something!

They'll incorporate it in their ROM as soon as they can port it in.. which will be in a week or so once the update.zip is release. So yeah, were good to go!

So Sholes will have the update then? Once I get 2.1 could I unroot and use 2.1 then root again?

So now the question is to root or not to root. I was just going to root tonight. So, what should I do, wait or root away.

Verizon sends it out over the network -- you'll get a notification on your phone when it is available.

What answer are you looking for? You keep asking this question. Why dont you just unroot and get the OTA update, and wait until sholes has a new 2.1 root ready.

No one here knows the answer or can give you assurances about what you can or cant do with regards to a 2.1 OTA update.

We don't know if that's the case yet. Those posts are all based on the Engadget rumor story from earlier today. The original also said the update was still being tested by VZW and no release windows was available.

My point being, at least part of that rumor was probably wrong. We'll just have to wait and see what the update brings.

Jeez relax. I read the response from before but I thought it was a little unclear so I tried to clarify my question. But I understand now.

Sorry, I shouldn't have been so harsh but it just seems like a lot of people who have rooted, especially those using the Sholes app, are running around like headless chicken repeating questions and looking for assurances that everything will be fine.

With rooting comes a level of risk you need to own up to a bit. Maybe I mis-perceived your intentions, but either way it shouldn't have been directed at you so harshly like that.

Its fine and I see what you mean, and I am sick of it too. Before I rooted I read a lot about it and know its risks, I was ready to do it then saw the sholes app so that made it so much easier. I just wanted to make sure some things, thats all...now back to 2.1 talk

My understanding is that if you already have root access, and have flashed the "nandroid" recovery image, as well as running a ROM that has ability to block the update (SM Updater will automate this for you) you're good to go. Just wait a couple of days for a modified 2.1 ROM.

However, if you install the update without having root access, and your phone isn't set up as mentioned, you run the risk of never getting root access again.

I hope this helps....

Just email the developer of the sholes mod and ask him. I wad told that when the OTA comes out that he'll have an update to upgrade to 2.1

So, if I get the update early Thursday before anyone gets the Update.zip, where is it located? I'll shoot it on over to whomever wants it.
I've been contemplating rooting, but decided to wait until 2.1 and see if I still had a craving for more (completely against what everyone else decided, I know.)

So damn glad I have a platform supported officially and non-officially. ****ing awesome. nothing but good can come of it.

I will load the official then start the 'beta' (hacks) process as soon as it is out. Wish I could do some of the dev.

For some reason, shortly after things were running VERY smoothly with hacks (apps to ROOT, etc. avail on Market and fast roms) an 'official' release is announced - Google/Motorola if this is the beta testing ground keep it coming.

I have a question,

Right now I have the 2.1 versions of Music, Gallery, and the Weather/News widget. What happens to this once I update, will it overwrite it? Or will I still have the manually installed 2.1 apps on my phone... ?

I am wondering this too.

I might just get rid of them for now until I get 2.1

i just have root, the higher quality video recording mod, and the auto play in high quality youtube mod. I'm very excited for the new update. I don't have no custom rom so I should get the OTA update on my phone right? and it will just unroot me?

This may be confirmation bias on my part but it seems like a really big portion of people who have rooted their phones only did so after realizing that an OTA wasn't coming January 21st. Just look at all the root related threads that popped up in the weeks following.

That one somewhat arbitrary date may have significantly changed the user base of the Droid forever.

and... +1 "I'm still excited for the 2.1 update just to see what the Devs do with it"
almost an exact description of my scenario, only with a minor twist:

I wasn't necessarily waiting for 2.1, I was waiting to see if an update was gonna brick rooted phones. Then I realized it was also possible for an update to prevent phones from being rooted and I didn't wanna miss that boat

All of those came from 2.1, so if they do get overwritten, it will probably be by newer, more refined versions. Just wait for the ROM Devs to sort it out...

First, see my post a few above this one about what you need to have on your phone to prevent it from installing the update until you want to. It's imperitive to have all that working first.

Once that's done, just wait a bit for the ROM Devs to release their version of 2.1 which will retain root access, as well as having more bells & whistles than the standard 2.1 release, I'm sure.

Default Motorola droid 2.1 update to start rolling out this week

Direct from Engadget:

We knew Android 2.1 was coming for the Droid, but we'll confess -- we didn't expect it to come this soon. Motorola is now reporting via its official Facebook page that it's "happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to Droid will start to roll out this week," going on to tease that it "will have more information to share on other device upgrades later." There's no detail on what the Droid update will entail or whether it'll roll out to every user this week (we doubt it), but by all indications, this is a promising sign that Moto's keeping the pedal to the metal, we'd say.

[Thanks, andrewcweaver]
Motorola: Droid update to Android 2.1 'will start to roll out this week' originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 17:14:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

No 3D list, still uses drawer. no live wallpapers, lots of half A'd conversions. Too little too late Motorola, just start working on 2.2 at this point.

+1 for 5 screens. I could care less about any of the other parts of 2.1 but I have wanted more home screens since day one (without a home app add-on). I have resisted the root so far but if I don't get 5 I'll have to make the move (once it is available).

Too little too late? The phone's been out 4 months and we get a big OS boost? Pff lol. I think the 3d scrolling is kinda stupid and the animated wallpapers just a battery/cpu cycle waster.

Props to VZW for getting the update out in almost less than a month since it was announced, good enough for me.

OOps is there a thread? I checked the whole first 2 pages and I didn't see it first lol hahah I am super excited for 5 screens. I held off for 3 weeks now from using any homescreen replacement and I'll finally be able to keep a screen dedicated to like Astrid and Pandora etc.

The screens and smoother running are definitely what has me excited.

So everyone who asks about if they should unroot, my answer is NO. Once you unroot and get the OTA update you WILL NOT be able to use the same exploit to gain root again. So basically if you want to be rooted and have 2.1 you need to wait for the devs to make a ROM, otherwise you won't have root until someone finds a new exploit which can take weeks, months or who knows. The original exploit we used to gain root access was fixed THE NEXT DAY so any future updates will have that patch, you can see it in the source tree.

So just apply the update after you have root, I'm sure it will be released with root access within 24 hours by some dev. The thing is that if we use the update staright from VZW it will write over SPRecovery which leaves you SOL, once a dev grabs it they can modify that so you can apply it with SPRecovery.

I'm forgetting...did root access come out before or after 2.01? (or, really...did 2.01 do what you're warning about?)

I'm unrooted, and excited about the 2.1 update. I don't understand all this disappointment -- I'm mainly interested to see if (as rumored) that power management is better and there is a speed/performance uptick.

The 2.0.1 OTA update.zip is what allowed us to get root acces, Zinx was able to add in the su stuff and the Droid would still allow it to be flashed because of a error in reading the keys or something to that effect, I can find the thread about it and the fix on the source tree if you would like to know more. So they fixed that the day after 2.0.1 was released, which means any update after it won't be able to use that exploit.

I'm most hopeful about the extra screens and media gallery.

My understanding is that 2.01 did not break root. 2.1 WILL!

If I get the notification to update but select update later, will I still be able to root?

I am still waiting for some indication from Verizon that an OTA rollout is happening. Motorola has no control over when the network people choose to send it. Also, I don't care about the 3D launcher vs the app drawer, I don't have a problem with the app drawer anyway. Live wallpapers would be cool - have those been successfully ported from Nexus by a dev or not? If they ported and work fine, then I would think the 'real' update should be able to support them. All the same, I don't care a whole lot about them. I want stability, quick response time, and 5 home screens. A better gallery won't hurt, either.

Yes, just don't run the update until you root your phone (if that's what you want to do)

2.0.1 didn't break root, you are correct. The update.zip it came in is what allowed us to gain root, Zinx pushed in the needed files to that update which would be allowed to flash on a stock recovery since it had a error in reading the keys. That error was fixed the next day and here is a link to prove it...
