Im kinda bummed that live wallpapers and the 3d app gallery are missing.
Im sure it had to do with performance issues as the processor in the Nexus One is almost twice as fast. Who knows...
However to those that are saying whats the point if those items are missing are missing the point. Each major release adds some 'cool' stuff on the forefront ..but the real reason for the upgrades are for the most part under the hood...bug fixes, optimizations, performance enhancements...
So yea..we miss the wallpapers (will get it back with root ), and the app drawer...but we get the new news/weather app, the extra screens, the voice everywhere functionality and most importantly all the hidden code improvements that will make the OS even better.
I've been waiting,, and waiting,, wanted to root to get some of these new features.. but decided to wait even longer. I'm glad to hear its FINALLY being released. I've read this entire thread, and don't see anyone asking about the speech to text. That's something I'm looking forward to.

We arent sure of this yet. Just because engadget said that doesnt mean its true, they have been wrong before (like saying iphone is better ) But like I said before, I live chatted with someone from Motorola and they said that our 2.1 will be the same as the N1s 2.1
So after reading the four pages, I'm still a slighty confused about root and the upcoming update.
When the update does arrive on my phone, I can choose to update later. At that point, I can quickly root and then go back to system settings and 'check for update' and it should update to 2.1 WITH root?
Also, what about all that SPRecovery? Would I need that if I simply want to root?
I work at verizon and just got off the phone with our tech support department and they are saying some time in the next couple weeks that it will be ota for the motorola droid

I had to show someone from VZ Tech how to boot the droid into recovery. No offense intended... but the link phases posted is, in my eyes, infinitely more reliable than someone in tech from VZ.

I guess I made a mistake with purchasing a Droid. I like it and it does everything I want. But I am completly lost with all this...ROMS, Sholes, Overclocking..WTH is all this. So is this whatever update good? Is it automatic? Do I need it? All this tech talk is hurting my head..I'ma go back to my RAZR

No, if you accept the update it will overwrite the modified recovery and the su stuff. If you want to have root and 2.1 then root your phone now and wait until a dev has modified the 2.1 update then you can install it.

This is exactly why we need a root sub-forum. Or, if the case may be that there is more rooted users on this forum, then a non-root sub forum. Either way, but I'm started to get irked that almost everytime I click on a post that may interest me it has to do only with rooted phones, or it quickly becomes a thread dealing with rooted phones.
I agree with jdb. This is my first post but I've been lurking since I purchased the Moto Droid I'm currently typing this on back on Nov. 6. I've learned quite a bit here but tire of all the rooting talk. I think the phone works great as is and is highly customizable through the app market. Any updates from moto/verizon/google are gravy. And thanks for the tips on software, including the announcement for docstogo for 10 bucks!
Main reason I'm not going to root is so I can run flash apps when it is released. Which probably be as soon as 2.1 is available.
That's my hope. The lack of flash has been rough from a web browsing standpoint. I wish Adobe would quit dragging its feet or web techs/developers would move on to html5.
I guess we'll find out soon enough.

If the Flash release had any ties to 2.1 they could have released (and gotten a big splash) when the N1 came out.
Adobe is on their own development schedule, and nothing I've seen has indicated they are going to (or not going to) release at or near the Droid 2.1 release...
mhome - rooting has nothing to do w/using Flash once it's released. It will work the same for rooted or non-rooted phones.
"Adobe today provided a disappointment for some Android users as it revealed that Flash 10.1 will only be available for phones running Android 2.1 or later. Showing it off in a demo, the developer new OS is necessary due to certain software-level access but effectively shuts out the majority of Android phones, most of which are either waiting for upgrades or are unlikely to ever receive the upgrade. Only the Motorola Droid and Nexus One so far carry 2.1."
This still doesn't mean that the release date of flash has any correlation with the release of 2.1. This simply states that any phones running older versions of the OS will not be able to use flash until, and only if the phones running old versions receive an upgrade to 2.1

Since Flash doesn't have anything to do with the release of 2.1 I'm guessing it will be at least a couple of weeks before its released after the 2.1 OTA for the droid. That being said... any rooted users who want to update to 2.1 will certainly have many cooked 2.1 ROMs to choose from created by the many talented developers who make rooting worth while.
So the same day unrooted (and possibly unrootable due to the exploit being closed in the 2.1 OTA) Droid users are watching their browsers slow to a crawl due to flash many rooted and overclocked droid owners will be enjoying access to 'the real internet'
/end elitist rooted user rant.
But seriously why not just root now while you know you can. Wait as long as you can after the OTA for a dev to release a 2.1 ROM, and if it doesn't arrive soon enough unroot and click 'check for updates' and boom you got your 2.1
Just an FYI: You can root your phone and keep everything stock. From outward appearance you wouldn't notice anything different from the original unless you decided to run a different ROM, or make some other changes.
The short of it is that if you root it you have the ability to change things in the future. Once you update to 2.1 without root access you loose that option, possibly forever...
Can I get a clarification on this. the second part is not totally clear depending on how you read it.
Are you saying that even if you only root now (and not apply a different ROM), and then apply the OTA 2.1 update, that this will unroot you for sure?
Or will you stay rooted with the OTA 2.1 update if you were rooted before the OTA update.

I imagine the former is the case.
Thanks,

Yes, if you root now, but do not apply a ROM, and then when the official 2.1 OTA update comes and you apply the update, it will make you to lose root.
Apparently an exploit has been fixed to no longer allow rooting after this update to 2.1.
But I am confident it will be re-exploited once again. If there is a way to fix it, there is a way to break it.

I work at vzw too and some of those techs have no idea what they are talking about, I have a droid and a Storm 2 and most of the times I have to teach them something about the S2, last time I needed to explain what is memory ram ...

Why are people so anxious for flash player? Besides a few internet games, I find flash unnecessary, buggy and bloated. I loathe flash enabled sites and very rarely do I find any site where it is absolutely necessary.
Not trying to start a heated discussion, I am just wondering why people are so antsy about flash player. I am actually kind of glad that it is not available.

I'm not lookin' forward to it (or the bloat, ad potential) too much either - though it would be nice for embedded audio players for podcasts, etc.

Very interesting indeed. Voice to text everywhere is a very very cool feature. The battery life extension is also very intriguing. The latest rumor I heard had this thing starting to be pushed on Thursday. I am sure that this thread will start to grow as this appears on peoples phones.

Anyone know if this update will just write over what is already there and keep my apps in place? Or will I have to go in and reload all my apps?
I am nearly 100% positive that data and apps will be safe. This is going to basically overwrite necessary system files, including kernel and drivers, etc. and reboot running the new kernel.
I am not a droid expert, but am I very familiar with linux.
