Talking Big Red got some new towers? Update *228!

I read in here Is the droid's 3g chip a piece of crap? that Big Red has expanded and/or improved there coverage.

I get Very bad signal at work and by that I mean my signal jumps from 1 bar 3g to 1 bar 1x sometimes I get a big fat 0 signal.

After reading this I decided to bring the old *228 option 2 out of retirement and give it a shot.

I have had a solid 2 bars of 3g for about an hour now!! I haven't dropped to 1x once and it used to be if I moved my phone the wrong way it would go to drop to 1x or no signal!

For those who don't know how to do this open your dialer and press *228 then press 2.

If you live in or around the Oklahoma City area I highly recommend this!

The last prl update was released on Jan 29th and only included a couple changes in Wisconsin:
HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - New PRL - January 29, 2010

It's another major major update here. The only change involves this SID:

Code:
  00362 [D] FR Cellcom
         CMA186B Green Bay, WI
         CMA263B Wausau, WI
         CMA711B Wisconsin 4 - Marinette
         CMA717B Wisconsin 10 - Door
The specific channels the phone is set to search for EvDO on were reduced to a more narrow, specific set of channels from a broader range.

That is all.
Howardforums is always on top of new PRL updates and they usually break down what actually changed pretty quickly.

Here’s what I know. When I bought the Droid the day it came out my signal has bounced back and forth from 1 bar 3g to 5 bars 3g at home and at work It just was crap( outside the building I get 4 solid bars 3g). I used to *228 like twice a week for a month hoping it would make a difference. Nothing

Then I read the thread posted above and figure I'd give it another shot and what do you know I have 2 solid bars of 3g at work now. I can't wait to get home a see if it is holding strong there too.

I in no way shape or form researched this before I posted and I haven't tried the *228 sense about the end of December beginning of January.

But I know for a fact that today I *228ed and I actually saw results for the first time. I just thought anyone living around OKC area might want a heads up.

The towers around here were all Altell towers. Maybe they did something to those? Would that show up as a prl update?

It is the alternate (Alltel) prl. Used in areas that have a mostly Alltel presence so your phone prefers original Alltel towers over Verizon towers.

Yeah, a change to alltel towers should show up in a prl update if they change the priority or something like that. If they simply upgraded the tower for better reception then it wouldn't show up.

Is this just a Moto Droid thing, or would it also work on my wife's Eris?

So basically this procedure searches for the best tower and connects to it?

I don't know if it will help any here in Alabama but I am so scatterbrained anyway that it is just another thing that I never remember to do so thanks for the reminder. It sure can't hurt and it only takes a minute. I guess I should add it to my list of monthly reminders. That list is really getting long.

The number doesn't mean anything but to Verizon. The point of a PRL ( stands for Preferred Roaming List) tells your phone wherever you are which towers to use first to ensure better service. Also especially in a roaming area it tells your phone which towers have an agreement and saves them lots of money and offers again better service. It is so importnant right now becuase of the alltell merger happeneing and the ongoing network changes that wreak havoc if the phones are not up to date on the tower changes.

The differences are usually posted on Howardforums.
HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - New PRL - February 26, 2010 is the thread for this newest prl. Sometimes it takes a couple days for someone to figure out the changes.

It is important to note that updating your PRL is not some magic fix for coverage. An updated PRL will only help you if there has been a change to the list that is specifically targeted to the systems operating in your area. Since system expansions and acquisitions are the only events that would trigger a change, it is highly unlikely that you will see any change in coverage or signal strength from any given new PRL. The recent ALLTEL acquisition and resulting system migrations are what is probably driving some of the improvements noted here.

That is definitely the reason. Also they have added completely new Verizon coverage and gotten new licenses

but is it possible that coverage can get worse from an updated PRL?

No. Well that is relative really. The prl will not affect your phone if you are in a Verizon only area since those towers automatically update on the phone. The prl only affects the towers in roaming or extended network areas it just so happens that with Verizon having acquired alltel and having a lot of new coverage with their towers the phones can get confused as to what towers to pick since they are technically not Verizon yet. Now if you are in an area and they messed up the prl then yes it could but they usually do not and if they do they update within 1-2 days!

When I dial #228 I get a message from US Cellular stating the update was not able to happen. I am surprised I get service at all in my basement, under a cliff, but hey I thought i would try it. When I leave the house i hit Verizon's towers.

Then be sure to get it when you hit Verizon service. If I may ask what area are you in because US cellular has very little of their own coverage and relies a lot on roaming so I am surprised you are picking them up.

I just looked at the new coverage map for your area and you are in native verizon all around that area so I would advise a prl update

Yeah, when the phone hit 3g, it dialed and it updated. Helped alittle. Now it stays in 3g, no longer hits 1x. When in 1x it roams on US Cellular

hmm it seems to have helped i guess. getting 2 bars of 3G pretty often now at work, compared to no bars or switching to 1x almost all the time.
