Is it possible to tether the android to a wireless router? Which will enable wireless internet access to my PS3 and Laptop? I am using at&t service with the at&t wireless router. I would like to replace the at&t service with the android Verizon internet access and tether it to the At&t Wireless router.

Um, you can turn your Droid into a 'wireless router' via wifi tether. You will need to root it first though. Look here for more info:

However, you won't really get good enough speeds to game on your PS3 (around 100-150ms latency). Also, it's against Verizon's TOS to do this, and if you use it too much, you will get caught.

tether to a wireless router? wifi access? not sure what you mean. the data stream will be weak if you want to do ANY online gaming.... whats the purpose you had in mind??

Well I wanted to replace my att internet service with the verizon internet service. I use the internet for browsing, searching, and little bit of music downloading. I play Call of Duty on my ps3 for about an hour a day. My att service works great.
Will the verizon service work as well?

Well, it's already been said but the internet service on your phone will not be fast enough for gaming.

Yeah, your AT&T wireless router is connected to a landline. It'll be faster than using a cell signal for data.

This is not a good idea. Wireless tethering with the Droid is fine, but it will most likely be inadequate to serve as a permanent replacement for a broadband connection.

I hope I am reading the question correctly, your internet that is on the phone is different from verizon's internet plan. The internet plan that you would get for the droid is completely different than verizon's fios (i think its called fios) network. Theoretically it is possible to turn the droid into a wireless router (via root) but its not nearly as fast as a land line connection and would not be sufficient for gaming.

Verizon's internet service has nothing to do with your Droid. They will give you a modem just like AT&T did, and hopefully it will be one with wifi like AT&T gives, if not you will have to buy a router.

If you mean you want to use the $29.99 Verizon Wireless internet service you are paying for on your Droid then it's not going to work. It's not part of the contract, without paying more.
I mean you can do it, but like the others have said, it won't be sufficient. And you will be using so much data that you will get caught and when you do you won't be very happy.

FWIW, from someone with a top 10 BF2 ranking (medic), playing via cell connection wasn't all that bad, even on 64 player map w/150-180ms ping.

As far as I have been able to determine, the lack of wired tethering is a shortcoming of the Droid which hopefully will be added in the next release. When I got my Droid, I asked about it, and this shortcoming was known to the Sales People and to the Technicians. The kind of tethering I want to be able to do again - my Samsung i760 did it just fine - is to connect my netbook via cable to my Droid and let the Droid act like a modem for my netbook. Since I was doing mail and account checks just like I can do with the Droid, the speed should be fine. I did all that and even did video Skype with my wire tethered Samsung i760 which ran just fine, too.

Does anyone have any experience or new information on that type of tethering for the Droid?

You can do wireless tethering easily with root, but wired tethering I don't know. Does your laptop have a wifi card? If it does your fine. Don't use this as a permanent connection though. You will get some heavy fee's sooner or later.

I play numerous hours of Online poker, how would the online poker software perform with Droids data plan? Is it against Verizon's TOS use it for online poker?

you can share the connection created by "pdanet modem" with your ps3 through an ethernet cord. idk about wirelessly though. would think you need to root to do that and i cant root with my phone so i havnt looked into it.

ANY tethering is against the ToS. You are not allowed to use your Droid's data connection for ANYTHING besides the Droid itself. Now this doesn't mean it won't work, and I would imagine online poker wouldn't require to much bandwidth.

That's what I did when I went to Shmoocon, well mostly, I'm a linux user, so I didn't have to use pdanet, but same principal. I don't trust any wifi in a hostile environment like that, even my own.

The only real reason for this I could see, is maybe to boost the wifi signal in your house. Otherwise, just regular old wifi sharing from the phone would support all your devices. With it tethered to a router though, you could keep an internal network when your phone isn't serving as your gateway.

To do this, you would just need a wireless router than can act as a repeater or access point. Pretty much any router that runs DD-WRT or Tomato firmware could probably be connected to your phone's WiFi tether.

If all you do is browse the web, and play flash games and small downloads, I could see doing this to avoid another $30-60/mo for regular home internet. As long as you don't use massive amounts of data, I doubt VZW will ever notice.

[OT]...Which plan are you running? I'm on Fios Extreme HD (or whatever it's called) with added movie channels, phone, and 35/35 internet. LOVE IT! And the remote controle app works great! It's faster than the IR Remote..lol **EDIT** And VZW just added NFL Redzone! Live games on Thurs/Sun night on the phone, plus Redzone channel. I hope it works well, and I hope they don't leave it only on "V-Cast" and make an Android App for it.

I can't see why anyone would want to use the (relatively) slow 3G internet for anything but light browsing and videos. Gaming = No (Latency), big downloads = No (not fast enough), etc...

It does work. I um, had to use my phone and tether to play WoW on an important raid night, when my internet at home was down. I actually had lower latency, but would occasionally have a lag spike. It worked well.

You could use this as a wifi tether for an iPad without having to drop the extra $150 for 3G support

If only verizon would bother to offer it in my area. They won't even give me their regular dsl service. I called them up to ask if I could switch to them, and they simply replied "at&t services your area". So much for deregulation increasing competition... They aren't even trying to compete.

The author of this thread appears to want to tether an Android phone to a wireless router. I would like that too for use in my trailer while traveling. I don't care about absolute speed. I just want a mobile hotspot where more than one member of my family can connect to the Internet through a single Android phone at the same time.

At present, I am using AziLink to USB tether my Milestone (Droid) to my Linux laptop. Proxoid is another possibility, but it is more limited. PDANet will allow you to USB tether an Android phone to a Windows or Mac laptop, and it is in the Android Market.

Other than to root your Android phone, I have not yet found a way to create a mobile wifi hotspot with an Android phone. However, I'm still looking.

I tether my phone to my xbox for xbox live, and I don't have any problems at all. My ping is a little higher than cable or dsl, but it is definitely playable with xbox live service.

That really depends on where you live. I don't get 3G at my house. Until our phones get faster than 10Mb connections, it won't be my primary internet source....

Its easy! Ive done it a Thousand times, dating back to my touch pro days!

1. Root your droid, and use wifi tether.
2. Get a Linksys DDWRT capable router, flash the router to the ddwrt firmware.
3.Use a Linksys DDWRT router to use the wifi provided by your droid.

It works well, i have experience using it on WOW, and it works fine.

PDANET works well, and supports bluetooth also, saving a cable, but reducing bandwidth some. Thanks for the pointer, DougWilson2000. My local Verizon techs made the same recommendation after I mentioned it to them.

Well i have been trying again for about an hour and no luck. I simply can not get this to work correctly. From what i remember when setting up the router to be a repeater or bridge i need the router and wifi ap names to be the same, so i renamed the router AndroidTether, which is the default name for the droids wifi. I believe that the ip address that the droids wifi spot assigns to itself is 192.168.2.254, so i entered that as the default gateway of the router. I gave the router an ip address of 192.168.2.9. I must being doing something incorrectly. I determined that the droids wifi ip was 192.168.2.254 using the ipconfig /all command in windows, but i could be wrong.

The reason i am attempting this is for use with my FTA receiver (sonicview premier) and IKS services (ihub). I live way off grid and use solor panels for power. I use to use a pc between my iks unit (ihub) and phone to share the internet connection, but being limited in power i need to do away with having my pc on to watch tv. I need to have my dd-wrt router act as a bridge to my droids wifi connection wirelessly, then that should allow me to have a wired connection from my iks unit (ihub) to the router to get the keys needed from the iks server to unscramble my tv signal.
Basically i just need my droids wifi internet connection to be available to the routers wired ports.
If anyone has a similar setup please inform me of how you got it working.

I have tried this a few times over the weeks, but would really like to get it working soon.

So i have been trying for hours to get my dd-wrt router to act as bridge or repeater for my droids wifi tether. I am beginning to believe it is not possiable. No matter what settings i use i can not get the router to communicate with the droids wifi tether.

I have no problems connecting the dd-wrt router to act as a repeater/bridge to my cradlepoint router that uses a verizon usb modem. So i know it is not an issue with the router itself. It must be a issue on the droid side, or my settings in the router are somehow incorrect.

And again, i am not sure if the ip address for my droid is absolutly correct. I use the ip address 192.168.2.254 for the gateway and dns settings on the dd-wrt side. I assume that 192.168.2.254 is the droids wifi tether address because that is the ip i received when i ran ipconfig /all command from my windows pc when my droids wifi tether was connected.

Has anyone ever successfully had a dd-wrt communicate and share the droids wifi tether internet connection? I am beginning to believe it can not work.

Yea, it's not going to happen. dd-wrt won't connect to an ad-hoc network, which is what the droid is doing. I can bridge, or even repeat my other wifi access point, so I know I'm doing it right.

Just got out of traffic school....anyway....at least now i know it wasn't something i was doing wrong. I also could get the dd-wrt router to connect to everything except my droid. I knew the droids wifi was a adhoc connection. I even tried the adhoc option in the dd-wrt side with no luck.
Now if this problem were to be worked out would it have to be on the droids side or the dd-wrt side. I ask this because i would like to know what forums i should be seeking help in.
Does anyone know why the wifi tether is adhoc mode? Or is it that the droid just can't do a infrastructure mode?
