Since both Email and SMS are considered "Notifications" I am trying to find something that will allow me to allow my phone to ring at night and for SMS notifications but I could care less about email notifications.

Tominabox1 - I have that one already but thanks for the suggestion. It also does not separate the two "notifications". So basically if you set notifications to silents then you do not receive SMS - unless I am missing something?
Download Locale from the market. It will do that for you. You can change the setup of the notifications based on time or location.
You can also actually set email notifications to off separately within the Email or Gmail application. SMS notifications are setup in the Messaging app or whatever SMS app you're using.

Technipages - Read the reviews on Locale and most have issues although I will give it a try.
If I am reading you right then you are suggesting using the actual mail app (k9 mail) and the SMS App (Handcent) to adjust the hours during which it makes noise? I looked at the menus for both and did not see an option to set profiles. Granted you can silent them altogether but it requires accessing the menu of each application and turning them off.
With my old Blackberry you could set a profile (let's say NIGHT) and by so doing it would ring for a call - beep for text - but stay silent for an email. This was done with little effort just selecting the profile. I did not need to access each component and change them.
What I am seeing with the Droid is that both the Mail and the SMS is considered a notification and since that is the case you cannot isolate one from the other - unless Locale does that?
If you buy Locale and the Locale Notify Plug-in, this can be accomplished. The Notify plug-in adds the capability to separate the notifications. It even describes your scenario in the Market description. Have a look. Oh, and Locale is $9.99 and the plug-in is 99 cents.
Mitch - Followed your prompts and after one night of testing - success. I was indeed able to specify email versus sms using their selective system of ringtone identification. Seems as if the Droid OS itself makes that difficult but Locale has found a work around. Thanks for the input. I will have to see what else Locale can do, as I would hate to use it for such limited purposes.
I'm glad it worked out. Locale has a ton of uses. You can mark on the map when you'd like your notifications to be silence, like at work or the movie theater. Have it turn the volume way up and vibrate when you're at a bar. Love it! The only downside is sometimes it can slow the device down when its trying to get GPS info.
