PLEASE READ: Reguarding the 2.1 Update for the Motorola Droid
Verizon just shot out a statement to let everyone know that the over-the-air push is "being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon." Should you happen to be one of those lucky test users, please grab the update.zip file off your SD card and share it with the rest of us. To do this, follow these instructions:
1. You will first see this message appear on your phone if you are one of the testers:
-Press "Install Now."
2. The update will then download in the background.
3. The following message will then appear:
-You may press the home button but DO NOT PRESS "Restart & Install!"
4. Plug you phone into your computer and mount your SD card. You should now be able to browse the contents of your SD card.
5. On the root of your SD card, you will see a file called "update.zip". Copy that file to somewhere on your computer like the desktop.
6. Finally, upload it to a file sharing site and post the link to it on this thread.
7. Now, you can now continue the update like normal. To get back to the "Restart and Install" menu as seen above, navigate to Setting> About Phone> System Updates."
Thank you in advance!
Following the upload of the update.zip file, I will post a guide on how to force the update for people who did not get the update. I expect to get a copy of the file, but no promises.

Yeah, the force update instructions should be the same as for the 2.0.1 update.
I'm sure we'll see a copy of that update.zip soon, if not the actual path to the Google hosted version, which is what I used to make my N1 2.1-update1 guide

Most likely. This is for just in case if we do not in fact snag a copy of the update.zip or the Google hosted version before the testing tomorrow afternoon.
Motorola The Android 2.1 upgrade for DROID by Motorola is being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon. It is expected that the broader phased rollout to all DROID users will begin shortly thereafter—we will keep you posted. A list of enhancements included in the upgrade is available here: http://bit.ly/VZW-DroidEnhancements.
Should we receive a copy of the 2.1 update in the middle of the night while I am sleeping, please PM me about it so I can make my guide to installing it live. PM's come to my email but, I do not get instant notifications. This would be very helpful to me.
do you think that the order people get their update will be in line with the time you activated your phone? (ie people who had their droid when it first came out would get the update before someone who got the droid last weed)

Thats a very good question. However, I have no clue. Any ideas?
If somebody gets a copy of the update.zip file, PM me. I will give you my email address so that you can send it to me. I now have server space dedicated for this file.
The fact that you owe your soul to VzW ... and the amount of your monthly bill.
My VzW bill is $693 a month ... I've been with them since they were Bell Atlantic Mobile (about 14 years now) ... and they own my soul until 2013. Trust me ... you don't want to be a VIP!
well its 9 now.. bring it on 2.1 !! i heard it was noon though.. then the moto fb page said "afternoon"
Judging from our past history with this update, I wouldn't be surprised if they released it for like 4 people, it locked their phones, and they put off the full release until Q4...of next year.
I have unrooted my phone to factory. I'm on the East coast New York and nothing so far. I know geographic location has nothing to do with it but if people start getting it i would like to know where ya'll are from. Maybe we can see a pattern. There always is a pattern no matter what people tell you. Oh i have been watching alot of Fringe sorry.
Damn I'm in Central timezone. Does that mean I'll never get it since I'm not in EDT?
Unfortunately, it does. And I wouldn't try manually updating it as your phone may reject the update since it's not in your timezone, this could end up bricking your phone if you try it.

I thought so. I just called the Verizon rep and she confirmed your statement. She said if I change the timezone on my computer it should port that to my phone and I might get the update then. Fingers crossed!
In another thread started today (to post if you get the 2.1 update), someone posted the official schedule for the rollout. 1000 people get it today. I was thinking and laughing about, wouldn't it be funny if all the 1000 people to get it today were rooted and have the hack for not being notified, and never received the update? lol.

Those Verizon reps are such a great resource of information!
BTW did anyone else notice that one of the features of 2.1, the improved google maps with night mode, is already available? I downloaded the update last night, it works great. Includes latitude as well if you prefer to be easily found by your wife, girlfriend, cops, gov, etc etc
First off, you can force your phone to check in for updates (both firmware and market apps) by dialing as if you were making a call to:
*#*#checkin#*#*
you should see a message that check in succeeded. Note that you'll still need to go under Settings -> About phone -> System updates to see the actual update should you get it at Noon.
Secondly, I'm pretty sure the downloaded update is not saved to the SDCard (/sdcard). I believe they are saved to the /cache partition along with instructions for the phone to boot into recovery mode and apply the update instead of performing a normal boot.
If that's the case, someone who receives the update notification will need to be rooted (but still running stock 2.0.1) and after the update is downloaded, dig around in the /cache partition.
ahahaha THE server...you dont know what THE server is...its this big server verizon wireless has that is in the shape of a big red check mark and it holds all of the android updates...including android 3.0
Device(s): Thunderbolt Bamf
Droid on BBv.4 1ghz,

As stated in the last updat, the update is downloaded from a server and I thought someone was able to download it. Isn't this how is was obtained last time?

This is not the case, at all! It does save to the SD card, I promise you that. Follow my method in the OP! DISREGARD THAT POST!
the pdf describing the enhancements and improvements is such a short list. do you guys think its just for regular folks and in reality there is a bigger list of bug fixes that aren't being mentioned publicly or you think this is it?
