We have heard from multiple sources that the much-awaited Android 2.1 OS upgrade due to start today, has been delayed. We’re told a last minute bug late last night was found. There is no new ETA.
Fire away boys!

Engadget also reports the same with a little more information....

"We knew things were just too quiet after the noon hour, and now we know why. An impromptu support group meeting has been scheduled for 1:30PM ET, though we're hearing the location is still being decided..."
This is getting comical. Okay, mess up once, no biggie. We let it slide because, hey, everyone makes a mistake. But twice and it's starting to look like amateur hour around here. Really Verizon? I get that you may have found a bug (maybe) last minute and held off the release. And yeah, I'd rather have a good functioning one rather than a buggy one. But you're telling me, for as long as you've been working on it, that you're just NOW finding the bug? Signs point to something else.
As retribution for this ridiculousness, you better be adding 5 home screens to the update. No, no, don't think about it, just do it. GD VZW. Who's running that place anyways? Morons?
Well, this happens all the time with software it seems. Just look at the PC gaming community. Unfortunately it happens. Yes it sucks, and yes I think the companies (VZW, MOTO etc.) should actually test their crap before announcing a release date.
This is why Im a fan of stating the release date is MUCH farther off than it actually is.... We do this at the company that I work with. You tell something that they are going to get it on the 18th, and it comes on the 20th, they are pissed. You tell them that they are going to get it on the 31st, and it comes on the 20th, they are ecstatic about getting it 10 days early. LoL
This is very disappointing! They let us wait a month since the last messup, how long will we have to wait now?
Being with VZW for six years now made me think of them as a truly professional and well run organization, which is why I'm so surprised for them messing up TWICE. I'm not happy!
IT'S OFFICIAL! I don't know how many times I've seen those words on this forum for this update. And people wonder why the threads are made a mockery of.

Well, like I said on BGR, I think the most infuriating thing is that there isn't an appropriate PR move. One, VZW posts it publicly on their website that it is imminent. Two, the buzz is clearly all over the internet. Nothing is sacred/secret. Three, the bug (according to BGR) was found late last night and they're communicating it now? Speaking of communicating...
I think they could have avoided the DROID owners performing seppuku right now, if they just posted on their website: "Sorry folks, we had to delay the update release because we found the following bugs[list bugs] last night. Instead of releasing to DROID owners a buggy update, we felt it was better to hold off until we fixed those bugs." Simply PR kind of stuff. I think if people knew the bugs and had a personal communication from VZW via their website, it wouldn't be as infuriating or frustrating.

it wasnt verizon persay it was there distributor that is nowowned by hp the name excapes me right now.
Because those "nice" ROM makers are NOT able to be held responsible if their release bricks a million phones.
Please find me some users who bricked their phone installing a ROM, when it was the programmers fault and not their own.
So glad I rooted way back when. I really didn't want to, but my phone is so much faster than it was before. The most recent ROMs are really amazing compared to the speed of the stock phone.
Eh people should just calm down. If you've ever coded software or been part of a bug test crew you'd know how many thousands of bugs can lie within there. Props to Verizon for catching it. If they released this and you all got screwed you'd be a lot more upset than waiting another week.

I didn't say that they did brick their phones, I said the ROM developers cannot be held accountable. There is a huge difference. If I were to release a ROM, and it worked fine for 95% of the people, but the other 5% had bricked phones, I could just shrug my shoulders. If Moto/Vezw does that, they have a lawsuit. Also, take into account the sheer differences in numbers. How many people actually rooted/installed custom ROMS vs the whole number of people who have a Droid. Your cross section of people that you are designing/programming for is in a whole other league
A tipster is pointing the finger at Bitfone who actually manages the distribution of the updates for Motorola. We have seen problems with other OTA updates from Motorola (CLIQs to BRIQs) so this really isn’t that surprising. We wish Motorola and Verizon the best of luck, and hope this OTA goes out without issue.
From our anonymous tipster: “Not sure if you’ve heard, but the real reason for the latest delay on the Android 2.1 update for Droid phones is due to Motorola’s distribution vendor (Bitfone- now owned by HP). They are having capacity problems with a) the Bitfone application that distributes the updates and b) capacity issues with the current network infrastructure that hosts this application. I spoke to one of the engineers personally and they mentioned that Motorola reps have been “bugging them all day” because of the 3/18 commitment date.”
I heard from my best friend's sister's cousin's 3rd grade girlfriend's father's brother that they delayed it because Flash was ready and they were going to add that.
Or I heard it because I just said it out loud, which means I heard it :P
I think I share the same sentiment as others on here....
WHY HASN'T VERIZON MADE THIS PUBLIC & APOLOGIZED.
Also, I have a hard time believing they found a "bug" in the software last night. They wouldn't have gone through the process of creating a roll out and what not if they were not 100% satisfied with the OS.
Which lends credibility to what folks are saying about the distribution. But how does a company that is owned by HP NOT have the power to push a 14 MB update to 1 mil or so users? That's troubling.
Still looking for Verizon to step up. Shame we have to rely on other sites for our info. Of course, then again, it's been that way since the upgrade was announced.

No one will die without the update
I completely agree but didn't wanna be the only one to post such a sentiment
I mean, seriously, yes I want 2.1 but I'll happily wait another day or week or month to get a copy of it with less bugs. (Some bugs are inevitable.)

I believe a Windows Phone 7 Series device is the answer. We all know Microsoft never makes such amateur mistakes and produces the world's finest bug free software.
Device(s): HTC Droid Eris to the Motorola Droid to the Big DX!!!

Not that I want one, but this is something that Ipod owners do not have to deal with. One company, one phone. With Android, you have phone company, a carrier and a separate OTA update distributor. Verizon or Motorola should be destributing this update themselves and not some Bitrate company.
I do not think it was a last minute bug, I think that the update distributor probably could not carry the amount of updates. Verizon is to efficient to not have fully tested this update and find something wrong in the witching hour.
Oh well, we can complain, but not matter what we'll have to wait.

If there really was a bug found, this isn't Verizon's fault. It's Motorola's fault. They make the software update, Verizon just tests it before they push it out. If you want to be angry with someone, it's much more Motor's fault.

Honestly I mean come on...years ago you didn't even GET ANY updates. I remember my FIRST cellphone. It was a Motorola ironically. It was like oval shape but tapered around the edged. Green screen with black letters lol. Totally terrible for texting. Moved on to an LG after that, then another, then another, then another...and now a Droid. That was 10 years ago...I've only had my Droid since January but I love it. Does a lot of great things.
Do I want the 2.1 update? Yep, but I'm gonna wait it out. This looks like it's not Verizon's fault either, so I wish people would stop bashing them.

LOL! Of course it's delayed. Nexus is releasing on 23rd and Incrediable in two week. Not withstanding the fact Google pulls the strings, but can expect no release until well after the release of these two phones. Why maintain the existing customer base, when you can churn it. They all wan't those new sales, not maintainence of aging products. Just think about it!

But why do that? That's a little sadistic, if you ask me, after it's already been announced twice; and promised soon to boot. There really is nothing to gain from "blowing off" the current customer base.

The Droid is only 3 months old. It still is better than a lot of other android phones. I doubt google is trying to do this.

If this is the case, then just give us forum users the update.zip file so we can manually install it. It will save them bandwidth and time.

Be patient my friends!!!!
Not that im too mad since the update seems to be a bunch of stuff ive been using for months. I'm not very optomistic that the new kernel is going to make it it "lightning fast".
So many people bought the droid so they would be free from vzw's (apple like) ways of holding the consumer hostage. If it wanst for my job's contract, I would probably be on iphone or n1.
it's "get it now" all over again!!!!

Verizon releases OTA. I'm sure they've got tons of guidelines and don't want to release a zip that anyone can crack. While they don't deter you from rooting (unlike Apple) it's the most "unlocked" and accessible phone I think I've ever used.
Apple releases their updates via iTunes right? Don't you HAVE to use it for that.

The 2.0.1 update was like this... actually every Android update I've ever seen came the same exact way (including the 3 or 4 I got on my G1 over the past year). There is nothing really secret in the zip they are trying to hide. People are only getting it quicker.. they aren't hacking into a remote server and stealing secured code or something. It's really not a big deal.
I could care less about this so called update there are custom roms out there with alot more on em anyway if it comes it comes if i doesnt o well..........Im just waitin for the flash player
