Default GPS always on?

The GPS icon is now always on my notification area. This has only been happening for the past couple of days. Previously, it would come on when in use (e.g. using Google Maps or some other application that was using the GPS) and then would disappear when the application terminated.

I used Taskiller to terminate all running applications, but the GPS icon was still on after I killed ALL of the running applications. So, I'm assuming that it's not because of a new, or updated, application I installed.

It doesn't appear to be causing any problems, but wonder if it's really on and draining the battery more than necessary. Also, it was a reminder to me that I'd left an application running that was using the GPS.

Is anyone else seeing this?

task killer is probably part of your problem at this point--get rid of that, immediately. When you turn your GPS on and off does that get rid of the notification? What apps do you have installed? Have you tried a power cycle to try and reset an app that might be constantly running?

huh?

why is TK part of the problem, explain?

I say leave your TK, it likely has nothing to do with your GPS issue - not even sure how it could. I run ATK and never have this issue. something else is going on and mot likely asking for the GPS.

BTW, you could turn on the Power Management widget that comes stock on the Droid and that gives you quick access to power on/off the WiFi, GPS, BT, Sync, Brightness.

I've tried power on/off and the GPS icon comes on as soon as the phone comes on. If I turn GPS off, the icon disappears. But, as soon as I turn GPS on, the icon returns.

I've had Taskiller on my phone for months and this didn't happen up to a couple of days ago.

I've got a ton of apps that use GPS. It's not a serious problem, and don't want to bother uninstalling them all to figure out which might be causing the problem.

I can't recall which ones might be new or have been updated in the past few days. I've tried out a few apps recently. And generally download updates as soon as I'm notified of them.

Are you running the GPS Status app? I had a problem w/it once where it seemed to get stuck in the "on" state and ran my phone battery down amazingly fast...uninstalled and reinstalled it and things were fine again.

No, no GPS status app. Is there any way to see what applications (new and updates) have been installed in chronological order? I'm trying to figure out what changed that made the difference.

there is an app called AppMonster and when you start it, I believe it shows the order in which apps were added or recently updated. I have noticed newer and updated stuff it always at the top. that could tip you off

BTW, do you have your settings > Location & Security > My Location set to use "Use GPS Satellites"? see if that is checked, if so, that might be your issue.

Just go into your settings and click Applications and then Running Services and turn whatever is on, off if you don't want it on. I have the Advance task manager which is like the task killer and I can turn stuff off including the GPS with that too.

Thesultan recommended you removing the task killer because it is as pointless as the virus scanner apps that are out there. a lot of people have also said they get improved performance after removing these TK apps.

When my gps acts up I find that opening and closing the browser sometimes gets it to go away. Maybe try disabling the location feature int he browser might help. But it sounds like you have a lot of random gps apps, so it's probably one of them acting up.

That's interesting. If the receiver actually was active you'd very quickly notice your battery draining. Haven't run into this myself nor seen similar situations discussed yet.

conversely, "a lot of people" report improved performance by having ATK.

either way, ATK or any TK has nothing to do with this issue

Thanks for Lock-n-load for the tip on AppMonster to see the applications in the order that I'd installed them. I'd downloaded several apps in the past week to try them out and couldn't remember when I'd installed each one.

I uninstalled "MobiQpons", which didn't work very well anyway, and that solved the problem. The odd thing was that I had killed the app and the GPS was still on, even after re-booting. After I uninstalled it, the GPS was no longer always on.

great. glad it worked..

that is a good app to have in general as you can use it to delete and backup apps from 1 place

it also seems like going into the market home screen then menu>downloads shows the apps in the order of most recently updated.

It's a shame though that the TK app wasn't actually able to kill the app in question.

sounds like the TK did kill the app, but the GPS was rouge for some reason.

yep, the market should also show what you downloaded and updated most recent but I like AppMonster as it also shows, besides install/update order, all apps current version #, the actual update/download data of each app, size of app, if it is "protected", total memory used & left on SD card and on internal phone memory, and allows you to uninstall it or back it up to your SD card - all right from 1 app.
