Even if it's $600 off-contract, I'll probably get it. I mean, it's a computer in your pocket, for cryin' out loud! You get what you pay for, after all

The Moto X is a flop in my eyes. It is 2013.

720p screen at 316ppi? iPhone 4 from 2010 has 326ppi...
Priced at $199 on contract? You just know the off contract price is $499 or higher.

Why not go get a Nexus 4? Better build materials and cheaper.

Your prerogative but I feel you can get an HTC One or Samsung S4 Developer Editions with stock Android and have a more premium device.

Or even a Nexus 4!

I can't believe Google was instrumental in this phone. It is 2011/2012 specs at best.

We'll see what the developer edition costs, and wait to see what the Nexus 5 launch brings on the 7th.

EDIT: My mistake... it's the G2 reveal on the 7th

I'm in the same boat unless the battery life on the Moto X ends up being excellent. I'll take the small form factor of the Moto X while sacrificing some specs if I can use the phone forever without charging.

Better build materials in the Nexus?

According to whom?

I'm not shocked with the cost of the phone. We knew it was basically a droid mini but built here, nothing led me to figure it would be cheaper. So who is starting the new nexus 5 thread so I can jump ship.

Look, Moto makes some very solid phones, in fact every other brand of phone I have had was total crap, BUT nothing with a shelf life of at most 24 months is worth 600 bucks.Besides, even the Atrix line (that was supposed to be the second coming) had it's issues.

I will probably hold off till end of the year now (if the HD will last that long) and see what the reviews are, see if maybe Moto has a follow up that's a bit more WOW than this.

Either Engadget got their info wrong, or Moto maker phones will have unlocked bootloader. :

Except on VZN...

So what exactly is "game changing" about this phone?

Release it last year at the same time as the S3 and maybe you have a fight, but unless I'm missing something it's the Motorola S3... a year late...

I was actually getting a little excited about this phone with the $300 off contract rumors. I'm happy with my S3, but there are a few things that Moto seems to do better than Sammy that would have made me jump. Designer covers isn't one of them...

Word.

Maybe at 9pm when the OTHER gag order is lifted, we'll find out why it matters.

Default Google Play version of MotoX... "soon"

per the Verge
A 'Google Play' version of the Moto X is coming soon | The Verge

so... since pricing may not (crossing fingers!!!) 100% accurate yet, maybe there is a dim light of hope at the end of the tunnel.

For those interested in what Motorola has said for the initial news release rather than the interpreted versions we're seeing - here you go:

Quote:
Moto X. All Yours.

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. Ė Aug. 1, 2013 Ė People want choice. The choice to design their own phones. The choice to control their phones by voice when their hands are occupied. The choice to have their phones assembled in America.

Moto X offers you that choice. Itís designed by you, responds to you and is made for you by Motorola, a Google company. Once you turn it on, itís all yours. And every Moto X sold in the USA is assembled right here in the USA.

With the best of Google services baked in, Moto X helps you get everyday tasks done quickly and with less fuss. But itís also designed to sip battery, not chug it, so it will go all day and into the night.

Responds to You

Moto X is ready when you are. It responds to your voice - no touching necessary. With Touchless Control you can check the weather, get directions, or do just about anything without lifting a finger. Moto X doesnít guess like other phones do. It knows.

With Active Display, Moto X keeps the information you need to know at your fingertips. Instead of a constantly blinking light, important information quietly appears on the screen. It doesnít interrupt. You donít have to wake it up to look at the time or see your messages. Before you know it, that constant itch to check your phone will be gone forever.

Need to capture that perfect moment before itís gone? All it takes is two quick twists of your wrist and Moto Xís Quick Capture camera is ready to shoot. Touch anywhere on the screen and youíll get just the shot you want. Its high-quality sensor can capture the darkest scenes or stop motion blur in bright light. Youíll see the difference in every shot.

And all of this is battery-friendly, so Moto X is ready to respond all day long.

Designed by You

Your Moto X is truly yours, because you design it. Through our online studio, Moto Maker, you choose the colors, and decide on the details: front, back, accents, memory, wallpapers, even add a name or a short message. When youíre done, we assemble your Moto X right here in the USA and ship it to you for free in 4 days or less*.

Choose from more than 2,000 possible combinations, with more to come. Weíll be constantly exploring new offerings, such as real wood backs, starting later in the year. Still love the classics? You can choose an eye-catching woven black or woven white model right in the store (see below for more info on availability).

Weíre pretty sure youíll love your Moto X, but if for some reason you donít, you can redesign or return it within 14 days**, no problem.

Made for You

Moto X has a unique curved back, designed to fit your hand comfortably, along with a 4.7-inch screen that makes it easy to operate with only one hand -- when you want to use your hands that is.

Plus, no one has ever assembled a smartphone in the US before. We think itís about time. Each Moto X sold in the US is individually assembled in Ft. Worth, Texas. Doing this in the US means you can design a custom phone online and have it delivered right to your doorstep in just a few days.

You Are What You Wear

Weíve partnered with the most innovative brands in the world including SOL REPUBLIC to create an ecosystem of accessories for your Moto X. We call it M4DE Motorolaô. These include headphones, speakers, cases, docks and more.

You can even match your headphones to your Moto X. They come in all the same custom colors of the phone, in two different styles. On your ears: SOL Tracks HD headset with a V8 sound engine that has deep base and high quality. In your ears: SOL JAX earbuds with controls for calls and music, plus free ear tips for life.

Where to Get It

Moto X will be available in the US, Canada and Latin America starting in late August/early September.

In the US, woven black and woven white models will be available at AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular, Verizon Wireless and at national retailers including Best Buy stores with a suggested retail price of $199 with a new two-year agreement. Additionally, it will be available on all carriers, including T-Mobile, at Motorola.com.

Visit motorola.com to sign-up for more details about Moto Maker, which will first be available for AT&T users. And, coming soon to Best Buy.

Youíll hear from our carrier partners around the globe regarding exact pricing and availability.

*Subject to parts availability
**California residents will have 30 days to return

This from an article sited above ...

No matter: the two product lines are geared toward different users anyway. The Droid line focuses on early adopters with performance and masculine design, whereas the Moto X goes after the mainstream with approachability, personalization and user experience. As Ron plainly put it, "We're aiming for user specs... what matters to the user." 41-megapixel cameras, 1080p panels and quad-core processors will have to wait. Ron assured us higher-end Moto X iterations are in the pipeline, though he wouldn't elaborate on when, but ultimately the specs on those models have to benefit the user. Translation: if it slaughters battery life or offers up an overwhelming array of software options (e.g., camera UI settings), it probably won't find a home in a Moto X device.

so I wait

I think the problem is, Google isn't thinking about us with this phone, they are thinking about the other 90%. Think, a Nexus for us die hards, and the Moto X for the rest of the world. Throw in play edition phones of the flag ship devices, and that's a pretty darn good line up to appeal to everyone. Sure we are disappointed, but I think Google is going to make a killing with this phone.

This from the CEO of Motorola, article linked above. (emphasis added)

Quote:
The Moto X is the first in a series of hardware products that Google hopes will supercharge the mother company’s software and services. A svelte slab with smooth curves at its edge, purpose-built to fit in the palm of your hand. It is designed for mass appeal, not just a slice of the population like Star Wars fans. It has its share of features that distinguish it from the pack, particularly in a period where some of the market leaders are reloading their innovation guns. These include persistent notifications, user-customizable design components, instant photo-capture, and hands-free authentication.
Seems the message isn't what the Moto X is, but what the process behind it is. What does it represent for the future of smartphones.

I'm still hoping it's gonna be in the $350 range off contract. Tmobile was selling the Nexus 4 For like $549 at one point with installments. I forget how much it was when they still had contracts.

Okay. So lets say P3Droid's tweet about off contract price is right...AND...what Ron says about higher end Moto X being in the pipeline. How can you charge $630(32gb off contract via P3Droid) and then make a so called higher end model and charge the normal price of $699?

So much for nexus like pricing!

Here's my take- This is just another phone, nothing really more! It's mid range and is basically priced like a one or GS4... All moto is doing is releasing it with stock android. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a nice phone and all but it's just another carrier driven phone that will be controlled by the carriers.

A google play edition will not wet my appetite because your rolling into the GPE phones as far as pricing goes. Maybe $50 bucks less then the one at $449 or so. I can't see it being $299 or $349 when carrier versions start at $199.

Oh well... That's that!

Looks like it's either the Droid Mini or the SGS3. I need something I can afford, I thought that this was it. The screen size didn't matter to me, the dual core processor didn't matter to me, the 720p didn't matter to me. It was the price that mattered. The rumors were $299 off contract and that got my hopes up.

Well this turned out not so epic. What a disappointment on the pricing.

Maybe I shouldn't have sold my Note 2 and stuck with my Razr M for a little while longer.

It is a beautiful device. I think the fact that it was manufactured in the US will make it very difficult for them to price the device at $299. It does not matter if the manufacturing cost was only $225. Let us not forget that there must be a few hundred people who probably wrote a million lines of code to get everything working.

The Nexus 4's pricing has set unrealistic expectations I think. The fact that it is manufactured in the US should count for a lot. No wonder companies prefer to get products manufactured overseas for cheap when the average customer only looks at the pricing

It just doesn't have the cutting edge specs so in that regard, yes. It still has all the customization under the hood of Android which Apple doesn't.

I'm still waiting on some solid, off contract pricing. I'm not sure the carriers aren't pulling a fast one.

I'm not disappointed at all yet.

This is a solid offering hitting exactly the points I've mentioned for weeks -
  • Good mid to upper midrange phone
  • Motorola construction, Motorola radios
  • Better OLED 720p screen than other OLED 720p screens seen to date
  • More extensive sensor suite including barometric and temperature sensors
  • Market friendly color choices
  • Market friendly headphone color choices to match (read back, you heard that here first in one of my posts, confirmed today)
  • Interesting camera hardware upgrade
  • Target on longer battery life

Motorola said months ago that the X would not be the ultra-high-end phone and that's been said repeatedly.

This is still far above most phones offered in 2012. Anyone disagreeing is certainly welcome to that opinion, but the facts speak for themselves.

This is certainly far superior to the SGS3 in hardware and specs.

And I agree - now it comes down to actual pricing.

Which - the blogosphere hasn't gotten right yet, they've been all over the map - so for me, I'll just wait and see what the real prices are from people actually selling it.

And if it's too high and I still want it - I'll wait a few months, these things drop like cars in price, ok.

It really should have because it's virtually the same phone. I don't see the $100 difference between them worth it. I will continue to steer folks that ask me for a good, smaller phone to the Mini. It's a great phone at a great price.

The availability was again a let down as well! Here we go again with the end of the month crap! JUST GIVE A DATE AND START THE BALL ROLLING!

Can nobody except apple get this right! Even though its a nice device and looks to be cool as far as customizing goes, I think I'll pass. It has a very mid range processor and honestly I think the GS4 GPE wipes the floor with it as far as specs go.
Better screen
Better camera
Better processor
Better battery
The GS4 is just better in too many areas for me to justify buying the X! At $299 contract free I'd be all over it! But I would rather spend the extra money on the better device.

When have they not?

I walked into Best Buy with a trade-in and got my release day phone for $50 out the door last year. Make that same exact deal $200 at Sprint.

I think the confirmed off contract price will make or break it tbh. Also is it true that the body customisations will only be available on at&t?

The Apple gets it right meme is strong and lots of people agree.

Apple has a brick and mortar store and website that sells all models and carriers can't hold back under that pressure.

Nowhere in Android-land does that exist.

I don't see that changing any time soon.

The only guys not under the carrier stranglehold that I know of don't live in the USA.

I did the same thing this morning for a Note 2. $299 from VZW, $199 from Walmart, $99 from Amazon. Same phone, using the same line upgrade on my existing plan. Sheeple don't shop for price, they get what they think they are paying for.

Again, the voice of reason (you getting a paycheck from Moto? )

BUT, I have NO problem with the phone, I love the phone, that's what kills me here, because I am SICK to DEATH of contracts through carriers and I was hoping this was my chance to get a phone I really liked and not get jobbed on the price.

We shall see ...

Oh and STILL no iron clad release date.
