As much as I hate my Gnex, ( slow to open apps, Samsung radios, glitchy software, etc. ) ... it takes unbelievably fantastic photos in a myriad of conditions. Every time I whip it out and start firing, it's always a subject of admiration among my friends. And rightfully so ... it takes great photos.

I really need to get a new phone as my Gnex just sucks these days. I don't really know why that is either, maybe I just got a bad one and it's showing its age more than others. But I use the camera on my phone A LOT and I'm cautious of how the Moto X camera is going to suit my personal needs.

Yeah, I know ... carry a pocket shooter if I want good pics. Why should I have to do that when I know that the camera in my phone is capable of taking pics. Just hoping that a software update or that JB+ ( or really any GP camera app ) will be sufficient for me.
The gnex had an okay camera, I've never heard anyone saying it was excellent until now. Lol

No offense taken and it IS grainy.

Explanation (not being defensive) follows, under hide tags for those not into camera stuff.

Gnex camera was not so good when it first came with ICS.
But it got tremendously better with JB update. I still have it and it's a lot easier to take focused sharp pictures with fast shutter speed than my RHD. Folks who ditched gnex before getting JB update probably don't know that.

Yeah I remember it getting better after the jb update. I had the gsm version and when on ics if I manually focused it took decent shots and I know it was better after.

But it still wasn't that great of a camera. The gs3 and the one x were both better. It wasn't horrible just not great, at least in my opinion.

I follow Motorola on twitter hoping they release a date or something and saw that.

I am a very tech or oriented person but when it comes to cameras I'm a total noob. I leave everything on stock settings, I never fully ultilize the camera but u like something that is easy as basic to use and takes nice pics.

The X looks like it is very simple and takes decent pics so I'm sold. Haha

I just realized this is a pre-release thread without a mention of P3Droid. (til now)

man I really keep jumping back and forth between the X and the Maxx... that battery life is just so tempting, i don't even make it through a day with my S4 so im really wondering what this will be like if i get the X...

hopefully Mophi will come out with a charge case that still fits the design profile of the X soon, then it'd be no question

The maxx is definitely nice with the battery, I personally am going with the X, I love the size, the form factor, the on screen buttons and the clean front, and I love the look personally on the X.(I must be vain, lol)

I couldn't agree with you more, i just ask myself if the battery will be enough, i was kinda suprised with all the hype about the S4 battery that it wasn't lasting me but MAYBE 8-10 hours during a work day... (all i am doing is surfing the web during down time, BT and GPS remain on 24/7 and i KNOW those are hurting battery just by trial and error, but they realy shouldn't drain it like they are)

Wish there was more, I cannot get enough right now. Still ticked off there hasn't been an official announced release date yet. I want this phone asap, I still haven't learned to be patient in all my years.

I am right there with you. Jumping ship to att and won't do it til this phone is out. Did decide last night I will have to customize. As little as I have on my phone it still eats up 16g fast so will have to get 32 to make it work for me since there is no expandable memory.

Yet another review that says something about the buttons being loose when build quality is mentioned.

I am in bad shape. I am on ATT and been wanting to jump ship to TMobile - too much coin for too little service with ATT.

SO... I have to wait till Nov to get a customized 32GB version.

This does worry me a bit. My Moto D4 had wobbly plastic buttons and it really bugged me. My Razr HD has rock solid buttons, they just don't move at all and there is a satisfying click to them. I really don't want to go back to the wobble again (should I decide to even get an X).

For every review I've seen with wobbly buttons, I've seen one stating the buttons are rock solid. *Shrug* Maybe variations in test units that will get straightened out before the production units ship?

Yeah, I had a HTC Droid Incredible 2 before I got my Maxx HD. The Dinc 2's power button definitely got lopsided later on in life, and the volume rocker, erm, rocked very loosely shall we say

On my RMHD though, the buttons are super solid. Very satisfying indeed. Don't want wobbly Moto X buttons. This definitely seems like a phone I'll have to play around with at a store before I decide to buy or not.

Now the question is whether VZW will stick with the 29th release date and allow AT&T to release first.

(I'm leaning towards yes for the love of their Droid line)

HTC One being released on the 22nd. Guess VZW isn't worried about HTC stealing the droid thunder.

Verizon's HTC One starts shipping on August 22nd for $199 on contract

If they release the x 6 months late it wouldn't make much of a stir either. I think they're trying to put htc out of business.

Huh?

The X comes out this month for Verizon. However you can only customize on AT&T until November and then you can customize on the other carriers.

Read that again. It said IF the X came out as late as the One on Verizon, it wouldn't make a stir either.

His Q&A wasn't cancelled. He just thought it was. 3 times.

Every link I could find led me to event cancelled, thanks to that screw up.

I guess the whole point of the "hangout" was for us to watch a youtube later.

First and last hangout I'm ever going to bother with - ever. But that's just me.

I got the same email. I registered while Leo Laporte was doing a TWIT live special with Guy Kawasaki after the official unveiling.

Yea, that hangout was essentially a 30 minute commercial for the X. No new technical points of any kind.

I was impressed by all the reports that this phone was snappy despite its specs.

After 2 years my GNEX was CRAWLING. I installed 4.3 and after TRIM was able to do its thing, my phone is super snappy again. Its so good that I lost the "itch" to upgrade.

I wonder whether all along, the speed of android was being held back by the lack of TRIM on their devices. I also installed the Greenify app to keep random applications from opening when they wanted and frankly, I'm not sure if I need a quad core anymore.

On a different note. On TWIT I heard Miriam from engadget say that all snapdragon processors had additional low power cores which could be used for language recognition. She suggested that always listening could be added via software to other devices. Any thoughts?

If you really want this phone then move to Canada RIGHT NOW. Rodgers will have limited quantities for sale this weekend.

The Motorola Moto X is priced at $189.99 with a two-year pact, and $549.99 with no contract. Earlier this month, Rogers said that it will have the exclusive right to sell the Motorola Moto X in Canada.
$549, Canadian money. What's that in US?

not sure if its been stated or not, but is the 32gig going to be available on Verizon when its released? or only through the Moto maker in Nov??

i need a 32gig as my GNex is 32gig and i only have 13gig storage left, so 16gig is not even an option

Miriam is dreaming. Or she's from outer space. Or another planet.

Snapdragons have lots of cores - always have.

They vary by Snapdragon model.

In Miriam's world, you can program one of the DSP (digital signal processing) cores to do that job.

That will entail plenty of other management work internally on the Snapdragon.

And a boatload of software that you're going to load into the CPU first to manage things.

DSPs are not considered low-power cores. They themselves take less power because they're ancillary cores - but that's it.

Several of us already postulated that Motorola would go that route.

They didn't. They did it right.

Those apps she's imagining will NOT run as efficiently as what's built-in to the Moto X in any way, shape or form.

Statements by people who theorize how things work instead of knowing are called bloggers and they are the bane of our existence.

But - theoretically, could you do it?

Yes.

Would you want to?

Not if you want some battery life.

Was her use of the expression "other low power cores" sensationalist and misleading?

That's the polite way of saying what she said.

~~~~~~~~
There are no hidden, secret, top-secret general purpose low-power CPUs on any Snapdragon. Never has been.
It's mentioned earlier in the thread - it's like a Windows hard disk defrag thing - only for solid state storage.
I know I have heard from multiple sources. I thought one was fairly official that the Snapdragon 800 was capable of the always listening feature but I have no idea if it will have any semblance of battery life responding from it.
