Default SD card reader for MotoX

I just got a fancy camera and want to upload pictures on the go through my android phone. Since the MotoX has no native card reader, I was wondering if I could just get a peripheral.

Has anyone tried anything like this:

Amazon.com: 3 in 1 USB OTG Host Adapter SD Card Reader for Samsung Galaxy S4 S2 S3 Note 2: Computers & Accessories

or this:
https://shopmeenova.appspot.com/

Do they work? How does the MotoX handle it? Can I use it to move pictures and upload them to wherever

The first one should work. (I won't say it definitely will, because I don't own one, but an OTG cable will let you do what you want with a card reader, and this one has a built-in card reader, so ...)

The second one will work if the camera uses a microSD card, not a full size SD card. (The first one will work with either.)

Thanks! I just ordered the OTG cable from Amazon. Hopefully it works out well!

Any update? It might be handy to have around, especially if the full-size USB port can successfully let the phone read a thumb drive.

I ordered the following and it works great:
Amazon.com: 3 in 1 USB OTG Host Adapter SD Card Reader for Samsung Galaxy S4 S2 S3 Note 2: Computers & Accessories

It can read SD cards, usb thumb drives, and can even work with a mouse. Not sure about hard drives that require more power, but this was the best $6 I have spent in a while

A mouse? Like, you can roll around a cursor on your (touch)screen? That's just crazy enough to pique my interest.

Yup. Haven't yet tried a keyboard, but it was very weird and cool to see a mouse move around the screen.

I got the device, and sure enough, hooking up a mouse to my phone makes a little mouse pointer show up. That could really be handy for precision actions that fat fingers don't do well, like when I'm using Jump Desktop to access a remote PC.

And plugging in a USB thumb drive worked perfectly. I was able to access it with Astro File Manager and view files with no problems. That's going to be really helpful for tweaking things on my USB drive in the field when I don't have a computer around. (Correction: I do have a computer. It's in my pocket, and it happens to have a "phone" app.)

One question, though. I don't see a way to "unmount" my USB drive. Is it being mounted in a safe-to-remove mode, or do I need to take extra measures (like turning off the phone) to prevent file corruption when removing the USB stick?

I haven't tried an otg cable yet, but is there an unmount command in settings / storage?
