Default Quick Comparison: Evo OG vs 3VO vs P4G

Just wanted to make a quick thread for Evo OG owners thinking about the P4G, or 3VO owners curious about the P4G (and vice versa).

A few pics...

Shot of all three from above: Evo OG - 3VO - P4G.

All roughly the same height with the 3VO being slightlier narrow than both, the P4G slightlier narrow than the Evo OG

Back Shot from above: Evo OG - 3VO - P4G

Side Shot: (bottom up) Evo OG - 3VO - P4G

All roughly the same thickness.

Top Shot: Evo 4G - P4G - 3VO

Top Shot with screen on: Evo OG - 3VO - P4G

Some Benchmarks:

All phones are stock software. The Evo OG is on Android 2.3.3, 3VO is on Android 2.3.3, and the P4G is on 2.3.4.

No science to the methodology. I just ran Linpack until the consistency factor was stable, and took the first quadrant scores.

Linpack scores (multi-thread):

Evo 4G: 31.142 MFLOPS
3VO: 60.869 MFLOPS
P4G: 51.722 MFLOPS

Quadrant Scores:

Evo 4G: 962
3VO: 1956
P4G: 2250

Later today I'll do some comparisons of each phone's camera taking ability.

Thanks for the comparo. The screens on both the E3D and P4G look really impressive compared to E4G, better contrast and color.

Thoughts on build quality between the 3?

If you get the time, could you do some browsing speed tests? Browsing speed is the one area where I really, really want more speed and I prefer real-life head-to-heads when possible. Maybe include some desktop sites like cnn, engadget, anandtech.

Sure thing.

Build quality wise they all feel pretty solid. I the P4G feels the lightest (and spec wise I believe it is). The 3VO IMO, feels the best in hand though, it truly feels solid (something hard to describe in other), and it's slightly heavier.

Sound quality seems to be better on the P4G. With my Evo 4G, right out of the box it had a tinny quality to it, and tended to crackle. The speaker however was great. The 3VO also had pretty tinny earpiece quality, although it was an improvement over the Evo 4G. The speaker left some room for improvement, mainly in the volume department. It didn't project alot of sound. The P4G has good sound from both the speaker and the earpiece.

One slight annoyance with the P4G. With the Evo 4G and the 3VO, the screen edges are flush with the edge of the phones. There isn't a noticiable transition from glass to bezel. With the P4G it's not the case, there is a noticible lip. Although the gorilla glass screen does curve upward slightly towards the edge, it's not enough to make it flush with the bezel/edge. That is going to be a dirt attracting area.

Something worth noting on the P4G. The Kickstand. When it is out it puts the phone into kickstand mode (as long as you have that option enabled), which puts the phone into landscape mode.... too include the Android UI. The phone can work with the kickstand on either side, so you can have the volume and camera buttons oriented up, or you can have the hdmi and charging ports oriented up. It's a pretty neat and thought-out feature.

That seems like a good summary of HTC and Motolola android phones in general... HTC does seem to have slightly tinnier sounding in-ear and mic sounds. Morolola usually does really well in that area.

The E4G had a monster of a speaker phone... kind of a bummer to hear the E3D didn't keep that tradition going.

I haven't had a chance to play w the P4G yet so I'll have to check out the screen to bezel transition.

Those Quadrant scores are exactly like mine for the EVO 4G and Photon.

But not like mine for the 3vo - stock I was at 2400. The rest of my thoughts on Quadrant, you know.

For a good browser benchmark, try Vellamo.

Okay Vellamo downloaded and these are the results of the tests.

Score of 671, not as great as the EVO 3D, Sensation or Galaxy Tab 10.1 according to the graph.

That will vary depending on your default browser and is just what it says - a browser test.

I only had one browser where I matched the Evo 3D tests on my browser - and I don't know who is reporting what, but I really have all my benchmarks pretty much matching the Sensation (the 3vo is all but the same phone) - so, I'd derate those published claims (wouldn't surprise me if there's some fanboy biasing of results going on there).

And there's some long discussion out there about how Vellamo behaves with tablet browsers and tablet screen sizes, so I don't bother with the Galaxy as measure.

Sorry, I shoulda said all that going in, my bad.

My 3vo scores from 720 to 780 on it depending on browser - it's good at showing the variability.

If you like, maybe see what you get with an alternative, like Boat Browser Mini. Do a desktop search to force the Photon to ask you which browser to make the default before running Vellamo. That is easily reversed and won't screw up your other configs at all, promise.

It does call your default browser for some tests.
