Official Lapdock 100 & 500 Discussion thread
The Lapdock 100 accessory has been out on the market for about 4 weeks now and I along with a few members bought it on day 1. Since it has been out for a while i figure why not start an actual discussion thread solely for the Lapdock 100 used with the Photon.
So if You bought the Lapdock 100 (or in the next few weeks the 500) post your insights, complaints, pros and cons of using it. As well if you hacked it (software wise), or modified it (hardware wise).
I will post up my observations later tonight.
Post away.

Haven't bought mine yet, but have been itching to stop by Sprint to finally bite the bullet and buy it before the premiere discount goes away at the end of the year. I'm eagerly waiting for some good reviews from all of you. The 100 seems better suited for my needs than the bigger 500, but with more reviews of the pros/cons, it'll give me a better idea if it's worth it for my needs.
Well, a little disappointment for me. I got my Motorola LapDock 100 yesterday after waiting for 2.5 weeks; I opened it up and plugged the phone in. When the LapDock started up the first thing I saw? A pixel was out!!!!
Well I took it to the SPRINT store and returned it. Another one is being shipped out to me. I hope it doesn't take another 2.5 weeks, I could buy the 500 probably by then.
But, for the time that I had the LapDock it was really nice. It would have been better if I had read the instructions on using the keypad but then I would have had to turn in my man-card right?
Stay tuned...

... so I took the LapDock 100 back last Saturday and a new one arrived at the house yesterday. Very nice. If I didn't know that I had my phone on the back I wouild think that I was using a 10.1" laptop. Very easy to use. The keyboard is very fubctional. The file manager works real nice. I can use my Doc's ToGo to open up/edit my documents. I am very pleased. Any questions let me know.
Oh yeah and it fits into the shoulder bag I have for my Galaxy 10.1 Tablet so I can bring both of them wherever I go. I know a little overkill but...

Sorry if my original post was misleading,I was just as disappointed as you to see that we still have to wait.At least we have pricing & wouldn't be surprised to find it available elsewhere soon.
EDIT:As of 11-24-11,still no pricing on MOTOROLA'S website,so,I'm assuming no one has this in stock, yet.
Tomorrow's another day..........

Ordered my lapdock 100 via telesales should arrive monday.
I have been enjoying mine now for a few days. real handy. I don't think I would pay $350.00 for the 500. The technology is still too young and I don't use the webcam on my phone nor my laptop nor my tablet enough to warrant me getting the 500. Bseides it won't fit in my tablet bag

Only reason I'll be getting the 500 is due to that vga out port which would allow me to connect to the second monitor at work. also the ethernet port which comes in handy at hotels.

Only thing I have to complain about is I'm getting low memory issues and don't know how to resolve it...lol.
Other than that, I love it! Just delivered today.
-EDIT-
I'm typing from my lapdock now. This thing is amazing!!! Exactly what I needed, when I don't want to take my laptop on the road. It's an instant lapdock that I can use on the road and be able to browse, without any issues.
It's almost like having a netbook, but with much more functionality.

If you have more than 3 firefox tabs open it may start to give those memory issues and or having apps open or running in the background on the phone itself.
Add the fact that basically with Webtop, you are running Linux, on top of Linux, on top of Android. One can see a possible bottleneck.
There are a few Ubunto type hacks that reduce this and from what I've read no memory issues present themselves, is faster and you have a true desktop experience. The only reason why I haven't done it is because I lose 4G since you have to have a rooted/unlocked Photon. But I need my 4G. Although the guys over at xda seem to be making progress in cracking that issue. Once its done, I am sure to replace the Webtop on the phone with it and really have a desktop running from my phone.
In teh meantime I am trying to learn as much about Linux, Ubunto etc.

So which did you get? 100? 500?
I've been out the loop for a min. Is the lapdock available in Sprint stores for purchase? I'm only interested in the 100 as that seems to be enough to meet my needs.

Does Android Forums have an app for Android? I don't see one. Had to key this on my notepad app and copy it in cuz my soft keyboard on this DX doesn't show the text as I type here. Idky, works fine everywhere else. I'm thinking about the D4. Wavering really. The right lapdock could be a game-changer for me. I have lotsa questions. To start, has any one tried to use a real usb mouse yet? If so, will a right mouse-click in FF bring up a real context menu that you can then navigate to and click on to select options just like on a desktop browser? Does the mouse scroll wheel work? I know this is too much to hope for...drag and drop with the mouse?

PHANDROID is the official app for ANDROID FORUMS,available in the MARKET.
As for any questions regarding the LAPDOCK 100 or 500,the 100 is the only one available @ the moment.Availability @ retail outlets of course will vary, the LAPDOCK 100 is available @VERIZON in my area & I'm certain @ SPRINT locations elsewhere.
I believe the models that work w/the 100 include the MOTOROLA PHOTON 4G, DROID BIONIC,DROID RAZR, ATRIX II, possibly the MOTOROLA TRIUMPH but, don't quote me on the TRIUMPH.I saw that in an article somewhere & even if the USB & HDMI ports line up & fit the LAPDOCK 100/500,I don't believe the TRIUMPH has received an update to work on either LAPDOCK.

Sorry, should've been more specific. I got the 100. The 500 is too big for what I needed because I purchased this specifically to bring on the go on trips. My laptop will now be my dedicated home computer, unless I need to do work on the road.
I had to call Sprint telesales. They honored the Gold Premiere 25% off (purchased the extra battery and charger too) and waived shipping fees for me.

Any discounts for those of us new to SPRINT?Seems I waited about a month too long to jump in,waiting for a good deal on the MO PHO,& missed on the opportunity to join the PREMIERE program.
If not,at least I can take some satisfaction in paying only $49.99 for the phone.

I'd call telesales and give it a shot to see if they'll give you the premiere discount to by the accessories. You need to buy at least 2 accessories to get 25% off, but it's always worth a shot. Worst thing they can do is say "no" and then you can say, "okay. I'm not sure I'll want to buy it now."

BTW, had to share a little funny story on what I did when I got my lapdock 100. So, in the interest of our phones being touch screen and there being touchscreen PC's nowadays, when I first connected my phone and the mobile view came up, it had my widgetlocker lockscreen showing. Naturally, without thinking, I went to unlock the screen touching the lapdock 100 screen!...LOL. All that happened was a big fingerprint swipe on the screen that I cleaned off right away. Thought I'd share that since these were obviously not made for touchscreen functionality...hahahaha.

THX! I'll give this a shot when/if SPRINT offers the 500,which is on VERIZON'S website, priced @ $299,but,just as AMAZON($349),is currently out of stock.
As more retailers/carriers are showing this in their catalog,I'm hoping this is leading to a release in the very near future.

whoa, thats not a bad price at all. i was expecting $349 like what is showing up on Amazon.
Come on Sprint, stop being so damn (insert any freaking word here) and put that sucker up for sale.
hmmm Maybe telesales has it?

Hahaha...totally. That was me too.
I don't think it'd hurt to just inquire about it, TS. When I called to order my lapdock and battery charger, I also asked if they'd price match in the event there was a Black Friday discount. The rep mentioned that they only thing they know about, as far as sales are concerned, are with phones, so in that case, they may have an idea of when it'll be available, which might allow for you to pre-order even if it's not out yet.

yes I use a usb (wireless) mouse with it and it works really well.
Right click and scroll also works using the mouse. An in both cases its much more preferred since doing it with the included touchpad takes a long time to go from one side of the screen to the other.
Other tibits that i have encountered with the lapdock 100 this past month are...
1-When trying to access photos using the file manager on the lapdock, they are presented in detail view only. there is no way to change it to show thumbnails. There is a thumbnail view to the right side of the file manager but it only showcases one photo (the one currently selected).
2-keyboard i give it 2 out of 5 stars
When you stroke a couple of keys the cursor jumps out of the line you are typing into another area of the screen, or it jumps into a previous word. i fy ou are not looking you end up with jumbled words since the typing was inserted elsewhere.
Now i do not know if its because my palm is reseting on the trackpad or not, but if so Motorola needs to disable the trackpad if one is typing.
3-While web srearching, the loading of each page feels like you are on dial-up.
Although this can be attributed to the fact that Webtop is linux on top of linux on top of Android (linux) or that firefox is slow. Either way i would love to be able to see other browsers available or at least the ones on your phone pushed over to the webtop.
4-Webtop does not have the capability to drag and drop lets say photos into an application. Such as facebook, twitter etc.
5-Unable to view photos or the gallery in webtop mode. One still has to use the phone and expand it.
6-of course the obvious one, no touch screen capability (which probably won't be introduced until version 5 or 6.)
If I think of any more, I'll post them here as well as over in the Motorola Webtop discussions Forums.
Maybe it works just give a try i just pass by a local sprint store they should have a demo unit just ask them i use my Droid Razr GSM one and ask them and it works...I'm waiting for the 500 so will see
My Lapdock 500 arrived today from Verizon. Not sure exactly the discount (corporate or if because I had bought my Razr already) but I got it for $249. Great deal as far as I'm concerned. So far I like it a lot and Pocket Cloud looks reasonably good on it. This makes on call for work a lot more bearable. I'm glad I waited for the larger version for that reason

I'm pretty sure the PHOTON works,it's just that some of the features only work w/the DROID RAZR.
The features that currently do not work w/the PHOTON,BIONIC,or the ATRIX 2 are the VGA OUTPUT,ETHERNET,& one other feature that I can't recall @ the moment.
Was hoping the OP could verify this, & then we all could start shooting MOTOROLA & SPRINT e-mails requesting a software upgrade to accommodate all the features of the LAPDOCK 500.
BTW,both MOTOROLA & AMAZON are still showing the LAPDOCK 500 as back-ordered or available soon. Those who have received theirs I assume are getting them shipped straight from a China-based wholesaler,w/the exception of the OP who got his via VERIZON.
Edit:The MOTOROLA website states that the only two devices that are compatible w/the LAPDOCK 500 are the DROID RAZR & BIONIC.
However, the BIONIC lacks use of the VGA OUTPUT,ETHERNET,&SD CARD reader.
I'm still holding out hope that the PHOTON will work w/the LAPDOCK 500 w/o any limitations.

So, for some older blu-ray purchases, I couldn't retrieve the digital copy anymore that I could put on my SD card (I still prefer hard files over streaming).
Nontheless, I'm discovering more and more useful aspects of having the Lapdock 100! Even though the 500 was a little large for what I wanted, I could see how advantageous that could be, especially when watching movies on the go. Has anybody confirmed if it works flawlessly with the Photon yet?

Lapdock 500 works with Photon
I noticed yesterday that a user on another Android forum had confirmed that the Lapdock 500 works with the Photon. I had one on order from Amazon but it was backordered so I decided to check with my local Verizon store. 1 phone call and 45 minutes later I had my $299 Lapdock 500.
Not everything currently works with the 500 and Photon (VGA, Ethernet). Moto/Sprint does still need to update Webtop on the Photon to support it fully (like the Razr) but the fact that the Photon is listed as supported on Moto's site is promising.

I wish I could comment on this, but I haven't even used it while on a call yet. The other thing I still haven't thought about is video calling. Anybody else notice what tb mentioned or tried any other calling functions?
