Posted my observations and trek about the event over at s4gru.

Warning, its long (but then again, when have you heard me making small reviews, posts.) lol

BTW, I saw Rob our fearless leader at the event. He went away impressed as well.

well, not sure how to feel today.

after patiently awaiting the EVO LTE release announcement, i must say that although the phone looks impressive, i can't say i am overly wowed.

i own the photon. the major differences that are important to me between these two that i see are

1) photon = WiMax (crap), evo = LTE (unknown but gonna be better 4 sure!)

2) photon = 1700mAh, evo = 2000mAh....how much is 300mAh really help?

3) RAM is about the same on each device, think i heard evo support 64gig? hella cool!

4) 1.2 Ghz vs 1.5 Ghz

honestly, the only reason i really wanted to switch was the rumors of the crazy ass battery size 2400-2800 mAhs and the LTE. I will add that i am 99% sure i am ggoing to re-up my contract (just did a new 2 yr last june)
here this year, but going to hold out for something better. maybe the next moto phone?

Nice. Very good write-up, TS! And not long at all. It was an entertaining read, so seemed way shorter than expected.

Another MO PHO'ER here & the specs aren't so much better on the LTEVO (especially if you're already covered w/4G WIMAX), to make the switch.
I'm not eligible for an upgrade until June 2013,so, odds are I'm gonna hang on to the MO PHO for quite some time, unless MOTO introduces something that totally blows everything else off the map.

As for the 64GB of external storage, I believe DREXAPPEAL has successfully used a 64GB SD CARD w/the PHOTON. :-D

Regarding the RAM, it's exactly the same...1GB. Let's not confuse that with the Internal storage, though. The Photon supports 64gb microSDXC (I know because I have one in my phone and also posted the link in the accessories thread on the good deal going on with regards to pricing of the 64gb), so it's likely the LTEvo will also.

Supposedly, the Snapdragon processor is more efficient at helping battery life, but I don't know.

The other advantage it has is the Photon is at EOL (End of Life), so fixing/support will maybe last for another year or maybe slightly over that, before it turns into Photon's just being swapped for another phone, when they have no more refurbs.

I'm on the fence still. Only reasons, as of right now, that I'm definitely upgrading (not sure if LTEvo or whatever Motorola releases) is due to the EOL status of the Photon. At first, I thought I'd be taking advantage of the "Buy Back" program I purchased from Best Buy, but since the MoPho is an international phone and has been confirmed to work with other SIM cards, I'm going to keep it as a "back-up" phone, as well as my International phone. In the meantime, I think it'll work just fine as my dedicated media/music player (if I do decide to upgrade).

Nontheless, you guys do have a point that the specs aren't "that much" better, but it is a thinner device and has that 4.7 inch Super LCD 2 screen.

i am not crazy about WiMax as i think it's acually worse than 3g :-D in a lot of areas around me.

i AM stoked about the photon simply for all the goodies it has. the lapdock, the hd dock, car dock, etc. i think when moto releases thier next lte phone for sprint, i will be very interested in that as hopefully my lapdock will still usable on it as maybe a lot of my other accessories too!

i think had i been with sprint and on on the orginal evo bandwagon way back when, then i would probably jumping on the evo lte here come this june.

Hey, is that deal still going for the SD card? If so would you mind sending me a PM with the link?

I just got my Photon and now I wish I had waited a bit longer. Maybe the successor will be back be for the 30 day mark. Oh well I'm sure the Photon will last me until October 2013.

Not likely. The successor, if there is one, will be at least 30 days after the LTEvo is released.

If you're referring to the SPRINT return policy (from the initial date of purchase),the grace period has been reduced from 30 days to 14 days.

Oh well, the Photon is good enough for me for another year and a half I think. The support should be at least a year from what I've read in this thread.

I still like to ooh & aah over the latest & greatest, but I seriously don't feel like I'm missing out on a whole lot by letting the LTEVO EXPRESS pass me by, or anything else that's out to date,w/the sole exception being the DROID RAZR MAXX,but, I'll take the PHOTON w/SPRINT'S unlimited data over VZW & any phone they have to offer.

The PHOTON stacks up very well against anything currently on the market today. Although this may not be the most popular phone in North America,it is sold worldwide & I quite often see posts from those owners in the MOTOROLA FORUMS. For the most part, they are just as satisfied as most here are w/their choice of phone.

If SPRINT/MOTOROLA does indeed release a follow-up to the PHOTON, I would definitely give it some serious consideration.

Okay, even though I'm really liking how the LTEvo looks, I really hope Motorola steps up their game (as far as new phone is concerned).

Looking at the Media dock and the Car dock that they have for the HTC One X, keeps Motorola in the lead for me (as far as upgrades are concerned).

I loved the Photon from the start, but the accessories put Motorola over the top for me. HTC is still failing in that department (even though their accessories always look nice).

Samsung phones suck. The radios are crap, the radio drivers poop and pee and they don't even use gorilla glass. Photon is a beast.

I agree every Samsung phone I've seen has horrible gps and data reception -- however a friend on AT&T thinks they did something with the Note that actually fixed the gps issue (they also flung their Note on the floor hard to show me how strong the glass is)... but of course I don't know if Samsung's crappy data reception would be fixed on a cdma Note.

(And yes, as a side note, I'm still constantly talking to at&t and Verizon about plans as I am actively trying to get out of my sprint contract -- the photon is by far the best on Sprint right now, but even with it's amazing antennas and performance, still my data speeds and connection are horribly unacceptable).

Well.. at the risk of being boo'ed off the forum by you guys, I have to say that I got the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note yesterday. That doesn't mean, I'm leaving Sprint, (I still have three lines with them), on the contrary, I see it as getting acquainted with the device and preparing myself so when Sprint does get it, I'll know the ins and outs of the device.
Yeah , yeah that's it, that's the story I'm sticking with. lol

After a full day of playing with the Note, I have to say, what a phone.
Last time I played with it was about a month ago in the store and I fell in love with it, but this time around I swear the phone got bigger. lol After a few hours, I guess my eyes re-adjusted to the size of the device and it feels perfect.
True its still is a big phone, but slender and feels good in the hands. The screen is awesome and on par with the EVO 4G LTE display. Both devices have black as black and colors represented well. The GPS actually is accurate and no matter how much anyone tries to convince me I will not flung it to the floor to test if it has gorilla glass.
The pen/stylus is awesome, reminds me of my windows days.

I tell you, once Sprint gets this device, I am dropping AT&T like a hot potatoe (pay the etf would suck, but eh what can you do.) Oh btw, the AT&T LTE speeds here in NYC are quite good, with Sprint and Network Vision on track, seeing this device on Sprint LTE will be a knockout.

As for my Photon, it has now become my secondary back up phone and replaced my aging Hero.

TS, you may want to return the ATT one. If that article I posted regarding the Note on Sprint ends up being correct, it might just be around the corner. I know it's just "rumors" right now, but if that rumor becomes true, it'll be too late for your being locked into ATT.

Funny I said this back in early March because the LTEvo is pretty darn close (except not as big a battery).

Taking into consideration that Sprint has stated that there will be 15 new LTE phones this year and you listed 5, Source: Phonedog that still leaves 10 more to go before the end of the year. (About 2 per month for the remaining months in this year.)
This is not counting the non-LTE phones.

TS, May emptiness could possibly get filled by the Note, since that's the only other phone that hasn't had any "formal" announcement, but is being rumored.

i was looking at a Photon when i went to upgrade my phone. the Sprint rep said that is an underrated phone but the phone you will be happy with since your coming out an Evo4g is the Epic 4g touch.well i think i made the mistake of listening to a sales rep. i have found my signal to be weak. and the internet doesn't even work where i live. yes i do have poor signal at my house. my Evo4g internet did work on the phone. it was slow but worked. the Epic4g it doesn't work.my pda app worked for my laptop on the evo4g. it doesn't have enough signal for it to work on the Epic touch.today is my last day to exchange the phone. down side. i have to drive 2 plus hours to exchange it. i bought it at a Sprint store. where i live we don't have any.there is company selling Sprint phone's but they wont exchange it.

I'd try calling in to Sprint. They may just allow you to exchange over the phone, since the Sprint store is so far away.

If you're really that unhappy with the E4GT, I still feel the Photon is the most underrated of all the superphones announced last year! I still love mine, even though I'm likely upgrading again this summer. Only reason I'm planning on upgrading this summer is to keep the Photon on the side as an international phone.
