I guess I shouldn't say I don't want ICS until I see it how it looks and works on our phone. Frankly, I like my MoPho just the way it is. I haven't rooted it, but I have customized it to my liking. Also, I've played around with a co-worker's Galaxy Nexus and I didn't like the OS. However, that could just take some time getting use to it. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I don't want to lose any screen real estate due to ICS's on screen buttons. Now, I may be off or misinformed in my pre-judgements, but I'd be happy waiting until my next phone; one that was built with 4.0 or higher in mind.

Pictures of Blur on ICS have been released for a while - looks quite nice, you won't lose any Blur customizations that you've come to like.
And you will not lose any screen real estate to soft keys on the screen, devices that have capacitive buttons (or physical buttons for that matter) will not have the on-screen buttons with ICS.

I tried to find as many "leak" articles as possible, and this is what I came up with that shows how it'll look:
Amen, brother. After previously suffering with a horrendous phone that was then rendered completely unusable by the "improvement" of getting 2.2 forced onto it, I want my phone left alone. The Photon works beautifully for how I use it and I'd rather not have that ruined. Don't fix that what ain't broke...
If this has been posted please delete or merge this post. Appears that the Photon will be getting Ice Cream Sandwhich by July! Slashgear has just reported it:
just flashed 0.3.1 yesterday, after going from ROCKO 1.1.1
I have to say, the OS is soooo much cleaner, well integrated, much more responsive, sensitive, and fluid. When underclocking to 800Mhz, this thing runs more fluid then it ever did on stock gingerbread. When underclocking to 1Ghz, this thing flies (yes, underclocking).
Given the way this thing runs, for a locked, unrooted user, i'd probably upgrade to ICS in a heartbeat, although I'm sure blur will lag the heck out of the system. The only thing is that ICS, i feel, is made for screens that are slightly wider in aspect ratio. I find that it can seem a bit cramped, but the way CM9 has been running for me, i'm never going back to gingerbread.
@drexappeal, after looking at the leaks, i don't think i'll be going back to stock and installing the moto version of ICS...that's just fugly...
CM9 ftw!

Thanks for the 411!
As far as the stock moto UI, I didn't like that thing since day 1 and have been using Launcher Pro Plus ever since (just as I did on my EVO), so I totally agree about that.
As of right now, unless fede releases the "revamped" Launcher Pro Plus prior to the ICS update, I'm planning on switching to Go Launcher Ex, since it's the closest thing to Launcher Pro Plus that I can get.
Thing is, with all the great stories about what people have managed to accomplish with their rooted Photon's, that's still an option for me...if Motorola's Photon 2 (or whatever they come out with for Sprint) isn't quite what I'm expecting.
Right now, in order for me to really consider taking my final "gold premiere" upgrade this July (before the new 18 month upgrade policy kicks in), there are certain specifics that would make me consider upgrading: 1) ICS (I'd assume that it'd have ICS) 2) Bigger screen, while keeping the overall dimensions the same (or close to the current Photon), 3) Quad-core processor (just falls in line with all the other quad-core phones that are being rumored).
As much as I love the kickstand, if they were able to make the phone even thinner than it currently is, but also come out with a kickstand case that bumped up the overall size to the same as the current phone, I wouldn't mind losing the integrated kickstand. If the case ends up making the phone bulkier than the current dimensions, that's definitely a losing situation for me.
Overall, getting back to the main point of this thread, I'm more looking forward to ICS, than the potential negatives that people have mentioned.

One of the concerns is, ICS is built to eliminate the need for the soft keys at the bottom of the phone and having those integrated into the OS. Train of thought for some is that, those that have a phone that wasn't built with ICS as the 1st OS, will lose some of the screen real estate because of that functionality. I'm not convinced that this will be the case, but we won't really know until the official release.

Well, it still remains to be seen. The rooted ICS roms that are currently available may not be exactly as designed for the Photon, so we won't know until the update comes out in 3rd Qtr.

I am slightly concerned about the EOL announced for April by Sprint. This may affect whether or not they release ICS for the photon yes?
A friend of mine rooted and loaded CM9 on my phone. There are some glitches that are near deal killers, specifically the camera and video camera are about useless.
Overall though, CM9 on this thing is awesome. I really hope that Sprint allows 4.0 to roll.

Wasn't sure what you were talking about, so I had to search for it:
It actually doesn't concern me at all, at least not with regards to ICS.
Only reason I'd imagine that the Photon is on the End-of-Life list is due to it being a Wimax 4G phone, which Sprint has already stated that they'll no longer be making Wimax 4G phones going forward. Any 4G phones released from this point on are going to have LTE antenna. And that's another thing that's actually pushing me towards taking my 1 last "Premier Gold" upgrade. The great thing is, the HTC EVO One (if the rumors of a kickstand and external slot for SD are correct) is looking dandy. Hopefully, whatever the Photon 2 looks like (or whatever successor Sprint/Motorola come up with), I'll have a good choice between the 2. If Motorola's new phone on Sprint doesn't quite suit my needs the way that the HTC Evo One is looking, I may just go back to my HTC roots. And possibly, maybe, Sprint/Motorola has something even dandier cooked up to replace the MoPho (at least, I can only hope).
And if you're wondering why neither the EVO 3D nor the ET4G isn't on the list, that's because both phones sold extremely well. The MoPho didn't get anywhere near the same amount of publicity and while it got rave reviews from those that decided to take the chance on it, they didn't put much into marketing the phone w/ exception to marketing it with their business products.

For me it wasn't really an issue. Ubuntop outweighs having 4G and ICS offers me nothing while stealing 1.3GB of storage. For those that don't know, official ICS kills webtop and ubuntop. It also abandons the webtop partition. You don't get that 1.3GB back that the current webtop uses.
The last news I heard was still Q4 of this year. Given Moto's recent "promise" of upgrading all phones sold in 2011 with Jelly Bean or getting a $100 discount on a new Verizon phone (oh joy), I suspect we won't know for sure what's happening to the Photon until December. This kind of delay is one reason I'm seriously considering a Nexus for my next phone. Even though Sprint's two Nexi phones (the Nexus S 4G and the Galaxy Nexus) had delayed updates, they both still got 4.1. Our OS in contrast is almost two years old now.

We will see hows this goes but I think it may be 2013 before we see it. My reasoning behind this is that OMAP Moto's (RAZR and the like) get updates first and in the past the OG Atrix gets the latest updates for Tegra2 based devices (Atrix/Electrify/Photon). For example the Atrix has had 2.3.6for months which we never got. Taking that into consideration, the ICS update for the OG Atrix has only ten days before it is late (July, August, September).
To me Moto ICS is a bait and switch. "Here, have ICS! It will only cost Webtop and the 1.3GB that Webtop takes up!" Yes, you will not get that 1.3GB back (in the case of the Atrix2 is was more like 2GB).

I think we need to start thinking GB update for the Moment type of rollout. "You'll get when ever you get it which may be never." The Droid3 was simply kicked to the curb.

Indeed, as was the Droid X2. Both phones that came out in mid-2011, both promised upgrades, and now officially stuck on Gingerbread. At least we have "further plans coming soon."
I like the Photon, I think it's a solid phone and it has served me well. I'm not going to buy another Moto phone until they put their money where their mouth is, though.
Well, that's one way to read the non-information on the website. Alternately, it could mean they're adjusting the release date of ICS (wouldn't be surprising, given the delay on the bionic) or that they're going to roll out Jely Bean, instead. I think there's no serious way to know what it means without info that they're not releasing, yet. I do know that I'm not planning on just jumping in as soon as it's announced without letting others do some testing and reviews for me.

Don't hold your breath. Personally, I'd much rather run CM10 now then wait for an update that may never come.
The atrix 2 soak test for ICS upgrade just started , but the system wont let me post the link. Google atrix 2, ics, gotta be mobile, and you'll find it.
The Atrix 2's status on the motorola update site was recently changed to "further plans coming soon.", just like the photon...

I for one am glad to see "updates soon" compared to "will remain on GB 3.2" like some of the other devices. I think this is good evidence that we are getting SOMETHING.

At this point, nothing would surprise me. MOTOROLA screwed the pooch on this one, unless the intent is to utilize the patent portfolio & run the handset business into the ground. If that is the case, GOOGLE & MOTOROLA are off to a running start.

We'll see what happens. Google has to intervine if they truly want Motorola to be succesful. They have to make Motorola into what they feel the ideal use, build, and growth that they see an android device to be. Otherwise, they should just sell off the hardware and keep the software patents.

The one thing keeping me from running a custom rom is the lack of 4G. I live and work in a 4G area and 3G speeds drive me nuts now whenever I go visit my Alma Mater for a weekend.

That would be truly a sad day if that happened. I just checked my data usage for the month that restarts the 3rd and I've burnt through 9.7GB over 4G but only a 245K KB on 3G.

In the meantime, I may be picking up a GALAXY NEXUS or NEXUS S 4G w/SPRINT. I'm so p****d right now,I can't even stand to look @ my phone, much less use it.
What a total crock:EOL'ed in APRIL, after less than a year on the shelf & totally abandoned 14 months after initial release. I hold both MOTOROLA & SPRINT responsible for this. What makes this even harder to take is all the hoopla that surrounded this phone when first released, & now what, one incremental upgrade to show for it.

I had suggested that the $100 was part of a more targeted approach to devices and a way to simply clean house and start anew. I really was hoping I was wrong on that one.
Lets see if the other part of my prediction comes true an Moto starts a three tier approach (flagship, mid-level and entry level) with a standard platform for each tier with only radio and carrier specific changes.
To save face I'd suggest that Moto offer unlocked bootloaders on all the devices they just abandoned.

Indeed. I've already made up my mind to wait for the next Nexus before upgrading. I'm through with custom skins and OEM ROMs. As for my trusty MoPho, I keep looking at mof's locked 2.3.5ish ROM that he's been developing for some time now. It's basically stock that's been unBlurred with a few other improvements, and it keeps WiMax.
However, I've also been appreciative of Lokifish's support for the Photon. It's nice to know we've still got a few devs at our backs.

I still need to get Ubuntop Beta 1.2.0 out to testers. Once I have an official Ubuntop release I write the Tegra2 Toolbox which will cover root, unlock, relock for all the Tegra2 phones.
If you are on xda at all, donate through there. It easier for me to maintain access to the donators section of my site as I get your xda name attached to the donation info. I redid my site so donators get the latest releases and beta's as well as access to privately hosted files, a forum and live chat.

I just wrote the following post over in the Motorola forums and have decided to post it in here (for historical reasons) in case they decide to remove it.
TS
It is ironic that I've been trying to get back into these forums for quite some time now and haven't been able to since my password keeps getting me a token error message. So instead I finally entered using my Google log in info only to find this bombshell of a news for the Photon.
In retrospect, I guess we can see the signs pointing to this conclusion. Promises made, promises broken. Days, weeks, months go by with the change of upgrading looking more and more slim. Its a shame really, because for all the devices I have own until recently, the ones from Motorola were in my honest opinion very well made, good designs and very good radios. They were, excuse the expression, "kick butt". Now it seems the only kicking butt being done is our own.
Other signs pointing to this is the fact that the Photon 1 got upgraded to a Photon 2 that is nothing like it before. It astonishes me how some companies decide to upgrade a device but making it totally different. The Photon 2 should have been both a keyboard version as well as a true upgrade from the first Photon. But what's done is done.
Now naturally, hearing this news one quickly turns to being angry, disappointment and we want to blame someone for it. Some have mentioned both on and off this forum blaming the admins, the reps, Moto itself, Sprint and even Google. But the fact of the matter is, it is the sign of the times. Devices come and go rather quickly, so quick that a flagship device deployed only 5 months ago can be EOL today, regardless if it got updates or not. Does it surprise me that the Photon was not upgraded, no, am I disappointed, yes.
The people have spoken numerous times asking for upgrades, updates, unlocked bootloaders, etc and while updates have come, it is the customers that in turn will dictate whether they will continue to be part of this parade of disappointments or not. I for one have not. The kicker was when the Photon Q came out with the keyboard and no Webtop in sight. Webtop in my opinion placed Motorola in the field of awesomeness, of innovation that so many strive to achieve but never get to. Regardless of being bought by Google, they saw the future and took a step in that direction. Nowadays, they got sidetracked and are taking the wrong road. Whether that is due to Google or their own shortsightedness is anyones guess at this point in time.
So as of today, I only see two other companies that are taking risks and being innovators much what Motorola was up to a year ago. Those are Asus and Samsung. And say what you may of either company, they are producing devices that folks want, and regardless of the marketing, actually need and use.
I still have 2 Photons (due to contracts), and had numerous lapdocks (Atrix modified, Bionic modified the lapdock 100, all which i gave to another forum member). I've also had the xyboard (which I like better than my previous Lenovo Thinkpad). Since then except for the Photons, I've replaced them with the Samsung Galaxy Note 1 (hopefully getting the Note 2 in a month) and the Note 10.1 tablet. Two devices that are risk taking and superb in their execution.
it is sad seeing this, but one has to move on and do what they feel is right and what works for them. Hopefully Motorola learns from this and does the right thing in the future, but for now, at least to me its a little too late. at least for those that still have the Photon, can feel comfort that there is a development community over in XDA-developers that will try to support you as much as they can. Loki is one outstanding member and what he has done is extraordinary.
Good luck all, and best wishes.
