I just came across an interesting option for those of us still holding on to our old, beloved Photons. A newish MVNO (mobile virtual network operator, think Boost Mobile and the like) called Ting is starting a pilot program where you can bring your own Sprint device to run on their network. It's limited to a handful of phones right now, but the Photon is one of them. If you're looking for a way to put that Photon to use but don't want to add another line to your Sprint plan, they may be worth checking out.

Ting seems to work on an a la cart system, where you pick an choose pieces to match your usage needs. The example they give is 500 minutes, 4000 texts, and 1GB of data on one device for $50 (data is definitely the lion's share of that cost). Comparable to other CDMA MVNOs, and if you need Sprint's coverage it's not a bad deal.

No, I don't work for Ting nor do I use them. I do plan on keeping this in mind for my Photon (and my wife's old Epic 4G) in case we want to upgrade our daughters' dumbphones to smartphones.

I was planning on just keeping my photon and using it as a media device. I'm still heavily considering upgrading to a Optimus G. The only problem is that it has no microSD support.
