Hey Guys, Not sure if I'm a late bloomer with TG's CM7 but I swapped over to CM7 last night and wanted to post some information. First, thank you very much TG, it's awesome so far.
1. Battery: Battery life is amazing on CM7 compared to stock. I unplug my phone at 9am and usually by now 5pm central I will have less than 50% and I am not a heavy user. It is 5:03pm and I am still at 70% and I have been fooling around with the GPS today. I use Batterytime from the market to monitor battery life.
2. GPS: I will update if it turns out different but for now, the GPS issue looks to be fixed or at least vastly improved. It only took 30 seconds to get a lock. I used GPS Test to check how long it took to get sats.
-EDIT- Still having issues with my GPS so I'm going to write it off as my phone failing since I haven't heard any new updates from anyone about the GPS not working. I need to get my phone exchanged.
3. Ease: It couldn't have been easier to swap over to CM7 if you follow all the steps. I used Titanium backup so everything from data to apps got saved and I have restored some of them. Also make a Nandroid backup before you do it as it says. There are also Youtube videos on CM7 and Nandroid if you don't feel comfortable.
It took probably no more than 15 minutes from installing CM7 in clockwork, installing gapps, loading CM7 and getting my contacts, apps, Google account restored.
Speed: Holy cow the MT is faster with CM7 or at least it seems. Apps install so fast and open quicker. The phone also seems to run smoother and the screen also seems to be more colorful but that could just be me.
4. Overall: I have only been using CM7 since last night but so far it has been amazing and a significant improvement over the stock Rom. The main reason I switched was to fix the GPS issue and so far it is fixed if not greatly improved.
Apologies if I'm the last person to swap over to CM7 and these benefits are old news but figured I would share just in case
Cheers,
~Novak

I haven't swapped to CM7 yet. Still trying to get enough nerve. I did root my phone last week and was tickled pink I did that. Everything on my phone works so good I hate messing with it in case I screw something up but I do want CM7.
I'm still reading and rereading over everything to make sure I know how to do it. The videos do help.

It is EXCEPTIONALLY hard to mess this phone up beyond something that is fixable.
Let me give you a little tip, You can make what is called a nandroid backup using ClockworkMod Recovery (a.k.a. CWM). It will copy everything from your phone and make a backup which you can then restore (again using CWM) if you ever mess up anything. You need to get the version from here in the forums, do not use ROMmanager! There is a thread in the All Things Root section, that gives step by step instructions. You can also find videos if you feel more comfortable watching those first.
After doing that you can install a different ROM (which are linked in the All Things Root section!) using CWM. This does not take very long once you get to know what you are doing.
Thank you for posting up all the videos! Trust me, it took me a lot of nerve too before I decided to fool around with my MT but it is definitely worth it and as long as you make a Nandroid backup, you are pretty much safe from any issues.
Give it a try, there's a wealth of knowledge out there and friendly people on the forum here to help you along.

Just follow along with the videos, it helps so much and you don't have to worry about forgetting a step or doing something wrong. Just do the steps the same time as the video does them.
Im currently running a stock MT (unrooted) but would love to try one of the roms. My biggest fear is that the MT will have ot be re-registered with VM as I have read about in a couple of threads.
Anybody else heard of this?
Thanks!

You do not have to reactivate it with VM. In fact CM7 and MIUI cannot activate your phone. You do it on stock and then flash the new ROM.
My triumph is currently stock, is there a certain order things must be done in to add cm7
such as do I need to do a factory reset first, then root, and so on. If someone could please provide me with a list of things to do it would be very much appreciated. Like so many others I love my phone, but want to take it to the next level.

I will work on a step by step guide for getting a custom ROM on your phone. It might take me a little while, but I will post the link here. I know there is a post about CWM already, but I will probably include that process so the info is all in one spot.

I have WinMo experience with swapping ROMs but Im fairly new to Android. A step-by-step would be awesome as information for this process is all over the place. My hope is to try out MIUI

Only thing is you can't re program your phone with a new number. Mt number got changed and with the cm7 yoy can't get into the SPC menu
Ok...I got up enough nerve and changed over to CM7 and everything went smooth cept for one thing. I did the wipe like they said you should do the first time you try it and rebooted and CM7 came up like it was suppose to. But I had nothing on the screens...no apps...no GPS...no camera...nada.
I went back to clockworkmod Recovery and did a restore hoping that would restore everything which it did but it also changed me back to original operating system.

Where did I go wrong. Now I gotta have CM7.
First thing is, you need to flash the GAPPS which are the Google Apps. The link is in Tickerguy's first post.
The second thing is all of the other non-google apps are in the app drawer. Did you look in there?
As everyone has said, you do not need to activate. Your phone will still be activated with CM7. I don't believe you have to have your phone rooted to install CM7. I rooted mine because I wanted to use titanium backup. You just need to have Clockwork Recovery installed and make sure that you read the full thread from TG's thread. You Should get GAPPS or you wont have anything. the Gapps download link is on the CM7 page.
I'm glad this thread has been beneficial to people,

Exactly. You do not need to root to install the ROM, but you need it to use Titanium Backup. For CM7 YOU NEED TO INSTALL GAPPS, or you won't even be able to access the android market or other vital Google apps. You should always read the complete instructions that the dev posted for their ROM. Each one is different. Also, I think all of these ROMs come rooted, so you do not need to do that after installing them.

Glad you got it going. It is always good to read the complete thread for a given ROM. There are a lot of valuable posts in those threads. If that is too long (some are very big) read at least the first few posts by the dev, to make sure you are doing what they recommend so you don't have issues.
I would recommend trying out MIUI as well. Both are 2.3.7 based ROMs. Give them each a week (or a few days) and see which you like more. I stuck with CM7, but many others like MIUI more.
I've been playing with my new CM7 install this morning. So far so good. I think I'm going to like it but I do have two questions.
On the status bar on top it keeps giving me a message saying I need to update my binary CU or something like that....what does this mean and if I need to then how do I do it?
2nd question...Since I changed over to CM7 I don't have a voice mail button on my phone. Before I did....how do I check my voice mail..not that I ever get any calls but curious?
Not sure about the fist part with the binary but as far as the voice mail goes. See if you can make a shortcut to it or you can always long press number 1 on the phone dialer. Not sure specifically what voice mail button you're talking about.
Should I do a factory reset before I install CWM ?
CM7 or CWM? I didn't factory reset to install CWM on my phone. Before you install CM7 though, you should wipe the user data under CWM as shown in the videos.
Let us know if you have any questions,

You don't need to, in fact you probably shouldn't so that you can create a backup of all your stuff before you flash anything else. You can then do a reset and back that up too, so you have a clean version of the stock ROM.

1. I think you mean the SU binary? Update it, you technically do not have to, but you should. Updating won't hurt anything. This is for the superuser stuff that you want running on your phone since CM7 is rooted.
2. a. You can long press one from the dialer and that will call voicemail.
b. You can pull down the notification bar when you get the voicemail notification and use that to call it.
c. You can make an entry in your phone book that is your own number and label it voicemail. Then on your home screen long press an empty space to pull up the menu. Select shortcut. Select Direct Dial. Select the voicemail you just created.
Any of the above will work (and I am sure there are other options as well) so take your pick and do what suits you best.

What I'm trying to say, is that I have a lot of apps and I don't want them to cause conflict with CWM or CM7 when I installed these programs. So would starting with a factory reset be a good idea,or not really necessary.

Your apps will not interfere with CWM. It is just your recovery options, not a system OS. When you flash CM7 you will do a factory reset (wiping /system /data and /cache). Which is where all the information for those apps are. I would recommend making sure your phone is rooted and installing titanium backup. Back up the user apps you want to keep using that, then when you wipe it all installing CM7 you can restore what you want using titanium backup. You can also just start it all from scratch and download everything you want from the market.

Agentc - THANK YOU! This guide was awesome! I followed your steps and Im now running MIUI! THANKS!
A couple of general questions.
1)
I made a nandroid backup as suggested of my stock ROM. If I choose to, will that backup return me to EXACTLY where I was on the stock ROM before installed MIUI?
2)
I spend last night re-downloading my everyday apps to the MIUI ROM. As Im using he same SD card that I used in the stock ROM, if I now move apps to the SD card, isnt it going to mess up my already existing apps that were moved to the SD card from the stock ROM? And what if I go back to the stock ROM, will it still be OK with the apps on the SD card that have now been "updated"? Am I making any sense at all?

1. Yes. It will be exactly how it was when you created the backup.
2. I do not move my apps to the SD card. This phone has plenty of internal memory and I like having the space I would use on moving apps for music/podcasts/books/etc. So I can not tell you what would happen. You could copy all your SD card files to your computer, save it as stocksd or something you want to call it. Then you can wipe the SD card and start clean. You could also start with it how you backed up and see what happens.
Thanks to all the great people on this forum CM7 is now on my phone running great the only thing I'm missing is speech recognizer where can i get this?
those instructions seem to be about the same as the video, except it recommends the factory wipe and format, so I tried that and then I tried to load the rom, it still aborted.
Then the phone got into a mode where it would only vibrate, I had to load the image folder back onto it to get CWM to come back up. I have the rom zip file on my SD card, but when I try to choose it and install it just aborts.
I noticed it's listed under Android 2.3, am I missing something there? I thought we were all stuck on 2.2 until Virgin Mobile did something. I used Gingerbreak. Not sure why the CM7 rom won't work. Restoring my nadroid backup for now.

CM7 is 2.3.7 You are only "stuck" on 2.2 if you don't want to install a custom ROM that is 2.3.
Are you choosing "install zip form sdcard" or "apply update from sdcard"? You want to pick install zip form sdcard.
Definitely doing the 'install from zip' command. I believe gingerbreak said v2.3, but if I check settings on the phone it's 2.2
How are you guys getting to 2.3? If I check updates there are none available, and I haven't seen any mention around here about being able to upgrade. I distinctly remember everyone being grumpy because the Boost mobile users got a push update and we didn't get anything.

Other than that I'm coming up with nothing on how to update Android. The phone is only on virgin mobile right?
When you follow the instructions in the post I linked and install either CM7 or MIUI, you will have android 2.3.7 It is NOT an update from Virgin Mobile or anyone else. It is available because the nice developers here took the time to make it. There will be nothing available when checking for updates (at least as of now) you have to download the ROM and flash it in CWM.
Gingerbreak works on some phones with 2.2, not all of them, but it does for the Triumph. Gingerbreak will not do anything to upgrade your phone anyway, it just will give you root access.
You downloaded the correct files of the specific ROM you wanted to flash? If you have the right files and follow those steps it will install. Make sure you have the updated version of CWM as well, because many ROMs wont flash with the older versions.
Ok, looks like I was mistaking the CWM zip for the CM7 zip, stupid error on my part... I've gotten it installed, but I think I may have messed up the GAPPS install. Is it supposed to be installed the same way as the ROM? I clicked install from zip, and pointed to the GAPPS zip file, and it ran. But for some reason I don't have my camera, maps, gmail, navigation etc.
My contacts and everything worked, it's synced with my Gmail account, but some essential apps seem to have been omitted. Is there a clean way to get these back or did I mess up the Gapps install? I really didn't see any specific info about how to install them, just a link to the file and a lot of warnings about how important they are.

As long as you have the Android Market, you should be able to get the apps you are missing (maps, etc). There might be some you can't, let us know if that is the case.

It seems that some of the desktop icons were just no longer connected to the apps. Everything is there, and all my user data is there as well.
To anyone else thinking of trying this, Titanium Backup will really help get you back up and running as well. This is what basically worked for me, once I figured out the few things I was doing wrong:
1. make Titanium backup (batch backup all apps/data)
2. make Nandroid backup (saves your ass)
3. install latest CWM
4. download and load CM7 & Gapps onto SD card
5. use CWM to do factory reset, format cache & system
6. use CWM to install CM7 & Gapp zip files
7. restore apps using Titanium backup and fix broken desktop icons
8. sucess!!
